- TravelBrianCOPearland, Texas945 contributionsRing the bellWorth paying for access to this and the museum as there is not much else to do on the island. Well maintained church plus you can ring the bell inside! Then can climb to the top of the bell tower and see the inner workings of the clock.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 July 2024
- tammyjewel628Houston, Texas344 contributionsIt's a must see if in Bled~ Gorgeous church in the middle of the lake ~The church is beautiful and a must see. The boats at the lake are easy to access. They will wait until it's full to go, but they fill up fairly quickly. You have a short time on the island so you have to be quick to see the church, ring the bell, shop at the shop (there is a souvenir bell which I will use as a Christmas ornament), there are snacks and ice cream too if you want. It's beautiful and there is a souvenir coin. Most of the European cathedrals have coins.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 September 2024

You need to catch a boat out to the island which can be via a self rowed boat, a pletna boat, which is rowed for you, or a motorised launch. We took the latter from the foreshore in Bled and the journey took 10 minutes. There is evidence of there being settlements on Bled Island dating back to the early Middle Ages. The first brick church was built in the middle of the 12th century. This church was rebuilt in the 15th century in a Gothic style however was damaged by an earthquake in the early 16th century. It was subsequently renovated in a Baroque style and restored in the 17th century after being damaged by a second earthquake. The church that now stands dates from this time. The bell tower dates from the 15th century but has also substantially been rebuilt as a result of being damaged by the earthquakes and a lightening strike. The current tower is 52 metres high (91 steps to the top) has three bells and an intricate clock which you can examine the workings of once you get to the top. Entry to the church, tower, museum is via a ticket which cost EUR10-50 each for seniors. Internally the church has a single nave and is decorated by the remains of 15th century Gothic frescoes, a beautiful gilded altar from the 18th century and some lovely Baroque furnishings.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 September 2024

Absolutely not worth it. €15 per person to be rowed to the island or €20/HR to rent a rowboat. Then the church charges €12 per person for what is probably a 10 minute visit, and nearly €4 for a slice of cake. Leaves a sour taste. So they got no money from us whereas if they had charged a reasonable fee for the church, we would have done the whole thing.

It was somewhat frustrating that in addition to paying for the boat ride to the island, there was an additional 12 euro cost per person to see the Church of the Assumption. I will say that there are a lot of warnings not to visit the church since it is relatively unremarkable. Still having come this far, my wife and I opted to pay the additional cost. Was it worth it, I think so as you get to ring the bell and you also get some amazing views form the belfry.

The church is on the top of a hill on the island of Lake Bled. The entrance fee (6 EUR) is quite high, but the church is frehly renovated. I knew the old condition in 2004. The interiour is baroque. In front of the altar there is the rope of the wish bell. When you ring, you can make a wish. When you are nearby, it is a must see.

The Church of Mother of God, Pilgrimage Church of Assumption of Mary, or Our Lady of the Lake are all names given to this church. Church on island in Lake Bled. History can be traced back to the 11th to 8th century BC for this island. There have been several churches on this island suffering earthquakes and fires. Many people go there to ring the bell and make a wish. Can get to the island by Pletna boat, row
boat, or walk across the ice when the lake freezes. They do charge for entry into the church plus you must pay for boat transportation.

We took a traditional boat, a pletna, with a friendly rower to the small island. 98 steps higher, we visited the small baroque church, very pretty with a beautiful altar with its rich gilding and the campanile. Climbing to the top doesn't do much. In addition to the religious aspect of the site, legend has it that if you pull the rope three times to ring the bell, your wish will come true... A visit to the site is pleasant, especially in the sun. The ice cream parlor is very good and the scoops of ice cream are tasty and generous.
We got back on the boat and got off halfway. We continued on foot to return to the main pier and were able to admire the castle on the other bank, the St. Martina Parish church (to the left of the castle). The ride was very pleasant.

The seventeenth-century Church of the Assumption of Mary is the main attraction of the islet of Lake Bled. The church is rather small and inside it preserves some traces of ancient frescoes and modest baroque decorations. It is also possible to climb the bell tower to see the clock mechanism up close. Entrance is paid and also quite expensive but if you reach the island there isn't much else to do.

We took a tourist rowboat from the shore of Lake Bled to Bled Island to see the church. Its history dates back to 745, and the current Baroque-style building was renovated in the 17th century. After climbing the 99 steps leading from the lake, we came across the church with a 52-meter-tall white bell tower. The church sanctuary is small in size, but has a solemn atmosphere. It is said that the goddess of love, Ziva, resides there, and if you ring the bell in front of the altar three times, your wishes will come true. Of course, my husband and I made all kinds of wishes (lol). You can climb to the top of the bell tower and take a look around. It is one of Slovenia's most popular tourist spots, and many tourists from all over Europe visit it.

The boat ride was 12 euros with really friendly boat drivers. DO NOT PAY 12 euros when you get the island. It's a trap. A basic church and a bell tower with blocked windows.
Just walk around the island..

This is a beautiful, well-tended baroque church in the Austrian style. It has several lovely altars and impressive art. At the transept, there is a bell rope. All visitors should make a wish and pull the bell at least three times. Legend has it that wishes could be granted. Despite that little bit of kitsch, the church is a beautiful and holy place.

Does anyone know how long the church is going to be under construction for. I am looking to get married here but will reconsider if there will be scaffolding on the pictures
Written 29 July 2018
Unsure but it was supposed to be down by the end of this month as was just roof repairs. My friend got married Saturday and was supposed to be down before her wedding but wasn’t

We’ve 4 children twins at 16, 13 and 11 year old would we all fit in one of the rowing boats you can rent please? Do they provide live jackets? Also do you have to pay for children to get into the church on the island? Thanks
Written 11 February 2018
Yes I believe you would fit into a rowing boat. I don't remember seeing any life jackets. If you prefer, you can cross in a motorised boat, or a large gondala style boat instead.
Not sure about child admission to church as we travelled with an all inclusive bus / boat / church / free coffee and cake ticket which we bought at Ljublana bus station. Very good value, much cheaper than buying tickets separately.

If you have bad knees, is there an easier way to get to the church?
Written 17 March 2017
Sorry, access from the boat dock to the church is via 99 stone steps. This is the only access to the Church of the Assumption
You can verify this info on Wheelchair World's Website
