Old Town

About
After being leveled when the Nazis left, this whole neighborhood of cobblestone Gothic streets and alleyways, baroque palaces, numerous churches and tiered burghers' houses were masterfully reconstructed to reflect the atmosphere of bygone days.

Lovely part of the city with various shops and places to see, this is the heart of the city and tourist visiting. Just remember this looks old but most of it rebuilt after WW2.Visited November 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 1 December 2023
- CristinelRomania1,378 contributionsBeautifulBeautiful area, for sure main touristic attraction in Warsaw. Many architectural buildings, cathedrals, restaurants, souvenir shops and many many more. You can spend easily half day or more in the neighborhood. And you will not regret. Sometimes could become very crowded as long as all tourists group comes here.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 5 December 2023
- AmKreuz86Helsinki, Finland780 contributionsA must see in Warsaw.I'll keep this short and sweet. The Old Town is an absolute must see in Warsaw. There's ALWAYS something happening and your eyes are always kept busy. In a good way. Just go and find out for yourselves. Many lovely places to eat and drink. To also buy local products.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 January 2024
- Tracy MNottinghamshire, United Kingdom197 contributionsGorgeous place to wander and spend timeThe old town is a rebuild of the pre-war old town, and very impressive in its attention to detail. We really enjoyed wandering the streets, which wind and intertwine to take you to a beautiful square (which in January had an ice rink and lots of cabins selling milled wine, hot chocolate etc.). Loads of lovely cafes and restaurants, plus shops to buy souvenirs. And around the edge of old town there are sunken gardens you can walk through, giving you a better idea of the scale of it all. We visited in January so greatly enjoyed walking through untouched snow around the walls.Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 22 January 2024
- Natasa KThessaloniki Region, Greece36 contributionsThe heart of Warsaw! The Old Town is for me the best part of Warsaw! You can't stop wandering through its narrow streets, admiring the colourful buildings with the little shops and ending up in one of the squares, the most beautiful being Rynek Starego Miasta with the statue of the mermaid. It really takes you back in time..Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 24 May 2024

The completely rebuilt old town is neat and impressive. Touristy in many ways, it is still the prime attraction for visitors.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 17 August 2024
- brixton456Indianapolis, Indiana314 contributionsBeautiful town! What a great area in Warsaw. There are plenty of shops and places to eat. Because the area is large it does not feel crowded. Nice overlook of the river. A UNESCO site, this is a must see in Warsaw. Take the time to get lost down a cobbled street while not on a schedule. We visited early evening, just enough time to see the last of the sunset and the beautiful lights of the town. You won't be disappointed.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 August 2024

Like much of Warsaw, the Old Town is a soulless place. Old Town is a reconstruction of what previously stood before World War II, albeit a fraction of the original surface area. Only the main central area of the Old Town was rebuilt, and it lacks energy. It's just a tourist attraction essentially in the middle of a city which greatly lacks energy to begin with. I've never actually seen a city of so many millions feel so downtrodden and bland. Contrasted to Gdansk or Krakow, Warsaw barely has a pulse. Compared to the not so distant Baroque Vilnius, it fails miserably. It is what it is. The Old Town can be visited in a short period of time, and hour or less by foot to see most of it. It's important to rebuild which was lost, and it must be praised as good policy.

A wonderful area, full of old style, with beautiful architecture. Plac Krolewski, where the Royal Castle museum is situated, is a large open space with always something going on. Little streets lead off, to the large market square, St John's Cathedral, Barbakan, just for starters. Always something new to explore there.

The old town is a great place to spend an afternoon. Everything here was flattened in WWII so most of the buildings were rebuilt after the war. Even though it is touristy there are a lot of good restaurants although they are more expensive than the rest of town. There are also plenty of souvenir shops and people on the street selling paintings or playing music. It is touristy but fun. There are multiple museums, churches, and other places to visit in the area as well.

If you're planning a trip to Poland, please consider StayPoland.com as your travel agent for everything Poland. My family and I just returned on Monday, 6/27/2023, from our tour and it couldn't have been better. This is our third experience with this agency and we haven't been disappointed.
We arrived in Kracow, Poland on 6/16, the driver picked us up at the airport and delivered us to Hotel Unicus for a two night stay. Having stayed there on our last trip in 2017, we knew what to expect, and the excellent standards were maintained. The next day, our agent, Anna, had arranged a walking tour of Old Town and Wawel Castle. Our guide was a font of information and kept us entertained for the three hour tour. Well worth the tired feet!
Our guide/driver, Peter met us in the hotel lobby, loaded us up in our 8 passenger Mercedes van and away we went. Even though our tour was private, it was a curated tour, Simple Pleasure, a seven day driving tour.
We visited the cities of Lanckorona, Novy Sacz, Łańcut, Zaność, Kazimierz, and ending in Warsaw.
The hotels we stayed in were all local to each city. Each were individual in their styles, but all clean and comfortable. The Hotel Modrzewiowka, in Lanckorona, had small rooms with double beds. that was a challange for our 6'4" son-in-law! Hotel Zamojski, in Zamość, had no central air conditioning. It was a warm day, but opening the balcony door soon cooled the room after temperature dropped after sunset.
We ended our tour in Warsaw and a two night stay at the Marriott. It was a real treat to be at an American hotel brand with some of the amenities we missed, AC and king beds. Again, our agent, arranged a 4 hour tour of Warsaw. It was a city drive, walking tour of the Royal Castle, and ended in Old Town.
This trip was to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. We took our two children and their spouses. No party will be able to out-do this trip and the memories will be relived for a very long time.

Enough said. I now live in Warsaw. Make sure to Google the museums in the old town, as there are loads hidden away! There's a list of free museums everyday (Google), including most of those in old town: the Warsaw Museum, the Royal Castle, the museum of literature. Such a perfect little place.
Don't forget to get your mulled wine in the winter and ice cream in summer.
You really could summer spend days sitting in Old Town being inspired by what's around you.

Accessible by bus or tram from the new town. Quite a small area easily walked through the large square through to the narrow lanes with bars and cafe's. There was an ice rink in the square surrounded by stalls selling mulled wine and various local delicacies

Visiting the Old town of Warsaw is looking into monumental buildings/houses that well preserved by the government.
It is truly remarkable to see the old architecture of Old Warsaw.
But on the other hand, when you want to have lunch during your visit in Old Town, be prepared that you won't find any other cuisine beside the Polish cuisine. To my own experience, the Polish cuisine is not really tasteful to me. Their food are often too greasy and contain heavy textures.
So be sure you have already have lunch outside the Old Town or have some sandwiches with you for your time during your visit.

Old Town in Warsaw, although devastated in 90% during german occupation in WWII, amazingly restored to the former glory, and thankfully brought to life bit by bit, can provide valuable input and enjoyment to anyone who is visiting the city, which was slotted by Hitler to disappear from the Earth’s face. Galleries, high end restaurants, festivals, can keep anyone busy to curiously explore the town, and learn our civilization past.
Highly recommended for a day trip. Antoni

Extremely lovely old town. Picturesque and full of open air restaurant areas. Each restaurant seems to want people to queue even though tables are available. If you don't expect good service, it is well worth a visit. Easily accessible by foot or public transport. Everyone vapes or smokes, it seems.

We were recommend Old Town by a friend who is Polish
Old Town met all expectations
We stayed in the heart of Old Town it is close all restaurants and there are so many to choose from.
There are a number of tours you can book we did the food tour which included food and history which was excellent.
The town has kept parts of the buildings to show damage/ bullet holes from the wars. They have preserved the original castle with mote, you can see the bullet holes in the century old buildings. In other parts of Old Town they had to rebuild completely
If you want to experience the culture and history of Warsaw then Old Town is a must see in your list
Would definitely stay there again
Excellent experience

Hi there
My boyfriend and I have krakow booked for next week 18-22 March. We are supposed to be travelling from Dublin.
We are not sure whether to continue with the trip, or cancel it due to corona virus. Are most tourist places still open? I’m aware museums are starting to close etc. Just wondering if it will be worth it for us to go as we wanted to visit Auschwitz etc.
We were planning to fly out of Warsaw and get the train from krakow to Warsaw.
If anyone could provide us with some information that would be great
Written 11 March 2020
Good afternoon, sorry for the late answer. I owe it to you anyway. I must have missed the message all together. I was planning and moving a country just before the total European lockdown. From Belgium to Luxembourg and just just made it, but I did!!!
Krakow to Warsaw is a worth while trip. 3 hours by train one way? If you get to krakow ever again, do it: old town, summer time nice walk along the river, shopping skyline etcetc
You also can go to Budapest or Prague. If only interested in staying in southern Poland: salt mines are also a must.
Hope you are well and safe getting ready for the new year!
Best wishes,
AJ

We senior citizens English speaking only from US are traveling Warsaw and Krakow, and interested in seeing Gheto related sites. We are touring with Gate 1 but will have plenty of free time. Our question is how do we find an english speaking guide who can show us around .
Written 24 December 2018
We would highly recommend the free walking tours. We have been on both in Warsaw and krakow. Guides have excellent knowledge and history of the areas. To be honest we did not bother with the Warsaw ghetto because there is virtually nothing left, it has been knocked down and built on. Our guide said the same.
There was plenty to see in Krakow of the ghetto. We also took a trip to auschwitz birkenau with Krakow shuttle who were excellent, picked us up from hotel, in mini bus, English speaking also English speaking guide at camps and brought back to hotel very good price. Tickets bought over internet, worked well.

Hi!
Me ( from Barcelona) and my girlfriend (from Devon) will be staying in the Old Town of Warsaw during 30th December till 2nd January and we were wondering if someone could recommend some places where to have dinner (ideally local food with veggie options) aswell a club (we like tecno music) or area where to have fun for the rest of the night.
Also if there's any nice activity to do there during the rest of the days.
Thanks in advance!

I am arriving to Warsaw and have to stay 10 hours until my next flight.
How I can go to see old town from airport ?
What is the best way to get there by public transit and how long it will take so I can be back on time for my flight ?
Thank you,
Written 5 October 2018
You failed to mention which Airport you are flying into because it makes all the difference!!!
Warsaw Modlin Airport is about 45 minutes away in a taxi and would cost approximately 80zloty-a bus is only 7 zloty
As for time on the bus I’m not sure sorry as I took a taxi.
Warsaw Chopin Airport is much closer
If you’re there for 10.30 am I would go straight to the tall statue of Sigmund opposite the Presidential Palace and look for the guys holding bright yellow umbrellas with flags on top representing what language they speak- they are FREE walking tour guides - the tour takes up to two hours and takes in so much including the Old Town- you just give the guide a tip at the end.
I hope this helps 👍

Hi, we are a group of 30 travelling to Warsaw at the beginning of June for a weekend break. We are celebrating my 50th birthday and wondered if anyone knows of a restaurant able to accommodate us all for just one meal whilst we are there? I appreciate there is a lot of us but would like for us all to sit down together at least once over the weekend.

I'm sure that Bazyliszek, right in the Old Market Square might be able to accommodate you. They have a huge patio, decent food (although nothing too fancy), reasonable prices and efficient service

сколько времени занимает добраться от аэропорта до старого города и на чем лучше?
Written 22 March 2018
