Quite close to the old town, this absolutely vast open square is well worth a visit. The chief reason for doing to is to visit the guarded eternal flame which marks the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, all those who have died through the centuries for Poland and it's people.
Make sure to get there on the hour to see the changing of the guard. They approach from a long way across the vast square in military formation to relieve their colleagues who stand guard by the flame.
The flame is housed in a beautiful, ornate archway, the only remains of an absolutely vast place that was destroyed during the war but never rebuilt. There is a lovely feature, the Marconi Fountain just behind.

This square is located quite close to the old town, and a monument for the Unknown soldier which is quite interesting, Dont miss out on the history plates that cover the unknown soldier monument, describing all the battles Poles fought in the history. There is a small monument and fragment of the Ghetto wall near the square, and close vicinity to the monument of the Warsaw Uprising in 1944

OK, there is nothing there most of the time but it really is a great place to meet.
We found that the best use of this place and his smooth floor is to try for the first time the electrical scooters! So much fun!

Marshall Piłsudski was a controversial figure, as he was responsible for a 1926 coup which ousted the democratic government and introduced an autocracy that lasted until ww2. He was, however, one of the fathers of Polish independance in 1918, so he is considered a national hero nevertheless.
The former Saxon Square, in front of the grave of the unknown soldier, where official celebrations take place, was renamed after him. His statue stands on its axis, but a bit into the road in front of it, where he stands surrounded by cars and some mock it as being a cark park guard. I guess they should have chosen the place better.

This place is a great draw for tourists in particular because the impressive Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is here. Many important events have taken place here over the years including a Mass during the 1979 visit of Pope John Paul II. Today there is a large cross & also a plaque set into the ground to commemorate this event. On another side of the square is a sculpture in the form of a large flight of stairs which was unveiled on 10th April 2018. This was erected in remembrance of the 96 people who sadly died in the 2010 Smolensk air crash, including the Polish President, Lech Kacynzski.

For someone from Western Europe Pilsudski square feels a bit like a desolate place. Many neoclassicist buildings without a lot of ornamentation, no cosy corners or exemplary features. Indeed ideal for military parades and mass gatherings.
Named after Pilsudski (1867 - 1935) the great Polish leader who played a crucial role in forging Poland as an independent country between the big powers of the time: Russia (later Soviet Union), Germany and the Austro-Habsburg monarchy. His statue is at the Eastern side of the square.

Pilsudski Square has previously had the names Victory Square and Saxon Square. Now the Square is named after Marshal Jozef Pilsudski who was the key person in the restoration of Polish statehood after World War I.
The main sight is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier which was erected on top of the underground foundations of the Saxon Palace, destroyed by the Nazis in World War II.
The Square has been the scene for many historic events over the centuries. The square is known for its military parades and open-air Holy Masses during the Pope visits.
Two luxury hotels, Raffles and Sofitel, are located next to the square.

A telling contrast to all fine buildings restored in Warsaw. Only a few arches are left of an old palace, destroyed by the Germans, now fittingly holding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

This places is much like America’s Tomb of Unknown Soldier. This sacred place is also guarded 24/7 by Polish Soldiers. It combines with the other patriotic places to visit in Warsaw. Warsaw is to Poland what DC is to America in terms of remembering sacrifices.
