Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The wood work and plaster work on show here in the old town hall is sublime. Being free on Monday to visit the museum is an added bonus. That said, I was put off going up the tower by a member of staff who said that, pandemic or no pandemic, there is no limit on how long visitors can remain there. I returned when they opened at 10 am the following day, bought the necessary... and left the building nineteen minutes later.

As a pin point of the city, the best place to start your exploration of Toruń. There is an exhibition and a town hall tower that, frankly, deserves to visit. The steps could be difficult, but a view is gorgeous! Decent prices.

Torun town Hall is an historic building, hosting a suprisingly interesting museum, the regional museum (muzeum Okregowe).
This museums features a great, large collection of paintings, of many different artists, eras, styles and themes. But not only. There is silverware collection. There is woodwork and ironwork. There are religious icons, items and statues. There are mideval tills and archetectural parts rescued from buildings in the wider Torun area. There are every day use mideval items and armoury. There is glasswork and statues.
In general not what you'd expect from a museum in a small (althoug historical) country town. I visited on winter, and place was very peacefull and quiet. Some maintenance work was thankfully taking place,as there seemed to be a huge cracking on a wall in the second floor. I wouldn't like to see this place closed for a long time, or even worse left to collapse or something, so I am gratefull thast action is taken to rescue it. Even if you are not too much into arts or history, I urge you to spend a visit in this museum. It's really worthing it!

We decided to go up the tower. Phew what a climb!!! Worth it for the panoramic views. Didn't go into the main museum.

Apparently this is the only historic town that was not damaged during the second world war. Its ramparts are largely intact and spectacular and inside are many old buildings and streets. Much of the old town is pedestrianised, so a stroll around was a pleasure.

For a few Zlotys you can visit this museum and choose pay a little more (17pln total) and get a ticket combining the museum and the tower from where you can see amazing views of the town and river. The museum itself is very interesting and you can see historic stages of Torun (even modern ones). You will also find a very good Rembrandt section here.
It is definitely worth it.

We visited Torun in the beginning of July 2012.
We drove from Kornik to Torun on the new Auto Route which took about 2.5 hours. The journey was not a problem as the roads are now very good.
We arrived at Torun and were greeted by a magnificent Iron Bridge, it really is impressive (we had a little time to inspect it as traffic was a little slow and only way into Torun !) and caught our first glimpse of the huge river that dominates the entire City.
Found a parking space quickly in secure car park in the centre of the City and set off on foot to have a look around.
The first thing that really hit me was how clean the whole city was, no rubbish, no dog mess, not even a cigarette butt, and this really makes a very pleasant suprise for somebody who comes from the UK and is used to filthy uncared for streets.
The whole of the city has a very "continental" feel, obvious statement i know but not usual for Poland. Bars and cafe on streets, nice restaurants, buskers adding to atmosphere and lot and lots of families with kids really enjoying themselves. Clean, safe and friendly.
There are lots of attractions from the old castle ruins that the kids love to climb on, boat trips on the river, cheap restaurants, bakeries and lovely cake shops. All essential when travelling with my wife and kids !!
The architecture is lovely and I could happily spend the day wandering around looking at the wonderful buildings, museums, town hall, tower etc.
All in all we had a really lovely day out and would recommend anybody who has a day to spare to go and visit.

The Town Hall isn't just an old town hall. It's actually a museum with a significant collection of art, both religious art dating back to the 13th and 14th centuries and secular art, and other exhibits.
Some of the art is quite exceptional -- the kind of objects you expect in a much more famous museum.
Unfortunately, some of the art is not curated with signage and I saw no docents. So you have to know what you're looking at. I didn't see an English language guidebook.
You can also climb the tower for sweeping views of Turon.

Sitting nearly exactly in the middle of the Old Town Square Market, Torun's Gothic Town Hall was constructed in years 1391-1399 in place of older merchant house, under supervision of local town builder, Master Andrzej. Privilege for its construction was granted by Konrad von Wallenrode, Grand Master of Teutonic Order. However, privilege was granted when construction was already under its way. From the older edifice only tower has been preserved and incorporated into new building. Two extra floors were added to the tower and its roof was covered with characteristic Gothic spire that survived until siege of 1703 when it was destroyed during city bombardment. Town Hall was erected on rectangular plan with inner yard, access to which was provided by four gates. On the ground floor of the east wing of the Town Hall so called "rich stalls"and "bread benches" were located. West wing was reserved for "cloth hall". In its north-east corner was placed town's weigh room, and in its north-west corner court room was located. On the first floor there was city council hall. The biggest room of the first floor was Grand Hall, reserved for special events. And in north-east corner of the first floor there was Royal Hall, where, on 17th of June 1501 King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania, John I Albert (Jan I Olbracht) has died. On the second floor, added in years 1602 1605, armoury and library were located. Adding second floor to the Town Hall building was a part of its general reconstruction in Mannerism style. However, architect Anthonis van Obberghen, who was, probably, responsible for rebuilding plans, has retained Gothic character of the Town Hall. About the same time, Town Hall's interiors were lavishly decorated, although, most of those decorations was destroyed during a fire caused by city bombardment in 1703. In years 1722 - 1737 Town Hall was reconstructed, and Baroque avant-corps was added on the west side of the building. This was replaced with neo-Gothic one in 1869. Also, in 19th century some of the interiors were remodelled. And finally, in years 1957 - 1964 general reconstruction works took place, along with its adaptation for museum purposes. During this renovation, 19th century partition walls were demolished, and some of the old medieval architectonic features were unveiled. Today, Old Town Hall houses Regional Museum of Torun where you can find some fine specimens of Gothic art, like 14th century stained glass windows. There's also open access to Town Hall's tower with beautiful view at Old Town. Admission fee is cheap, although you'll need separate tickets for museum and tower. Even so, it's still cheap.

This is a town hall typical for wealthy and important trade hubs like medieval Toruń. Inside, there a city museum with many interesting exhibits and hall tower with magnificent view at the whole city.
