Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

They had some great and memorable paintings here. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit and took lots of pictures of the paintings. The day I visited, a Tuesday, was free and surprisingly with very few guests. It didn't seem like many people knew about it yet it's in the heart of the old town.

Located on second floor of Krakow's Cloth Hall, right in the centre of the Main Market Square, is the Gallery of 19th-Century Polish Art.
This gallery is definitely on par with the Musée d'Orsay in Paris and the National Gallery in London, and, in some respects, is even better! On a scale of 1-5, the Gallery of 19th-Century Polish Art deserves a 6!
It is a relatively small gallery, with just four large viewing halls, but very nicely set out and very conducive to contemplation of all the beautiful artworks exhibited.
The paintings on exhibit reflect not only historical events in Poland but also different schools of painting, e.g., Realism, Impressionism, ....
There is also a marvellous exhibit of sculptures - in plaster, in bronze, in marble and even in stone.
I was so fascinated by this gallery that I returned twice in less than a week - and, will undoubtedly return again in the coming weeks!
Very difficult to pick out 'favourites' in this gallery, but the two portraits that resonated most with me were ....
*****************
Death of an Orphan 1884
by Stanisław Grocholski (1858-1932)
The poignancy of this piece is almost palpable. This painting so beautifully reflects the fleeting and transitory nature of human hopes, dreams, aspirations and even life itself.
*****************
Stanisław Oświęcim at the Body of Anna Oświęcim
1888
by Stanisław Wojciech Bergman (1862-1930)
This portrait really appeals to the romantic in me.
The story associated with this portrait has many versions and many variations.
According to the most popular version, Stanisław, courtier of King Władysław IV Vasa, after returning from his diplomatic missions, fell deeply in love with his younger sister, Anna. He went to Rome in order to obtain dispensation from the Pope to marry Anna. When he returned he found his sister had died.
Various versions say that Anna
- was poisoned by Stanisław's mother
- was murdered by a rejected suitor
- died while anxiously waiting for the return of her brother
- died from excitement at the news that the Pope had blessed their relationship.
In fact, she died from either tuberculosis or typhoid.
Stanisław gave orders he should be buried next to Anna in the crypt beneath the Oświęcim Chapel. Anna and Stanisław's coffins stand next to each other. So that he could see his beloved sister after death, he asked for a small glazed window to be added to his coffin.
Numerous literary, artistic, musical and film works have been based on the romantic love between Stanisław and his sister Anna.
*****************
All the other paintings in the gallery also tell a story either about professional portrait painters of the day or about historical events.

My visit to this museum was by coincidence. Was on my way out of the Cloth Hall Market when I spotted the entrance. Free entry on Sundays. Close by 4pm. If you wanted to rent an audio guide, it’s costs 5-7 zloty (sorry, can’t remember).
Exhibitions are on the 2nd floor and divided into 4 rooms. Each room displays paintings and sculptures from different periods.
Was surprised by some larger than life artworks. Amazing. Did not know any of the painters before entering this exhibition, will definitely look them up after.

Housed upstairs in the cloth hall, the museum houses many interesting works of art. Stop for a beer in the second floor Cafe and watch the activities below in the market square.

The gallery above the cloth market is quite beautiful in the paintings it possesses however I found the staff immensely rude, ignorant and uninterested in visitors. Security barked at us about bringing in heavy coats though nothing was said at the front desk! It really ruined the gallery for me. To the front desk sniggering at us in polish to the cloak room assistant not looking up from her phone for a full four minutes, there's a serious problem with staff at this establishment.

Great museum, a really must see. If you are into seeing everything properly, I would recommend at least three hours for the visit, as there is really a lot to see. The entrance costs 20zl for an adult, although if you register online in advance on their website for a visit on a Tuesday, your visit will be free of charge. Recommended for tourists and locals alike.

Definitely worth a visit, you book a time to visit from the travel centre in the square so it doesn't get too crowded.. And it's free!

This small museum of Polish Art is located on the second floor above the Cloth Hall in Krakow Old Town Market Square. There are three rooms to view the impressive artworks before heading to the cafe on the floor below with an open air balcony overlooking the Basilica. 20 PLN entry (15 PLN for children) or 50 PLN for a family ticket. Worth a visit !

This is a nice museum on the second floor of the Cloth Hall. Only four rooms but full of some great works and a good way to spend an hour or so. Very spacious and not very crowded when I was there. Rick Steves’ guidebook has an excellent section describing the major works in this museum, otherwise you can rent an audioguide.
When you leave the museum take the stairs on the right which will give you access to the balcony and a bird’s eye view of the square and St. Mary’s Church. A great place to take photos or just relax.

Is this museum open on New Year's (January 1st)?
Written 19 November 2016
I agree with Andy B, you'll find that most places will be closed on 01 January, 31 Dec there will be lots of parties and I'm guessing that the next day everyone is too tired and/or hung over to do any sightseeing.
However if you go to the museum website - this message will not allow me to send you the link, but you can find it by looking for the museum here on Trip Advisor, the website is in English, you'll be able to contact them and ask the specific question - or you can call. I check the website and could not find any reference to 01 January or any other closure dates, apart from the fact that it's closed on Mondays. Worth sending them an email though.
