- ClareHealy126 contributionsGreat bit of history and not very expensiveSo very well laid out, so interesting to see the square dug up in the photos and the history of the area. Lots of fun things to do. The highlight for my 13 year old was the pavement and also the displays of smoke and water on the floor.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 4 October 2023

Really do think it would be a better experience if headsets were available for the first half explaining what we are seeing. Second half was really good.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 5 October 2023
- Clash46Ashford, United Kingdom121 contributionsGood museumThis is such a good find! Really interesting and fun museum. Gets quite busy. The only issue I would say is that it's quite different to find the entrance which is the other side of the ticket office - so you need to go to the ticket office on one side of the Cloth Hall market then you access the actual entrance on the other side but it's not well marked and literally just behind a glass/wooden door.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 October 2023
- huw jPontypridd, United Kingdom819 contributionsEducate yourself type visitAn interesting & educational visit showing the history of Poland & parts of the old city walls etc. Well worth visit around £12. - PeteFredericksburg, Virginia1,200 contributionsThe settlement of KrakowThis is a really cool underground archeology/history museum. It explores the origins of the settlement of Krakow. The existing underground structure of stone and sandstone dates to circa 900 AD and the rest of the museum offers glimpses of the evolution going forward. I’m most impressed with the goldsmith shop and the water pump. I highly recommend touring this museum while in Krakow.Visited November 2023Travelled soloWritten 7 November 2023
- Lenard MTartu, Estonia11 contributionsExplore the medieval world of Krakow....A miserably rainy, cold day pushed us out of the streets, seeking shelter, and Rynek Underground was perfect for this - the archaological dig is well documented, as are the artifacts found, and made relevant to the historical periods and the development of Krakow. The interactive screens (in several languages) are informatively thorough. The documentaries at the end of the passage are well worth spending time watching. My only complaint is that the lighting could have been a tad brighter in some areas.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 7 March 2024
- LoopyLeigh, United Kingdom40 contributionsRainy day activityA bit confusing as you have to buy tickets from the ticket office, which is on the opposite side of the building. We didn't book and went on a Tuesday, a day where the tickets were apparently free! We were initially turned away as they had 'sold out' for the day then miraculously 2 tickets were available. The tickets are for timed entry. The museum itself was really warm, so make use of the cloakroom. It was a bit dark and boring to walk around, so don't think I'd have paid to go in. The most interesting bit is the bodies they found and the photos showing the excavations. It was a good way to spend a rainy dayVisited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 April 2024
- Rachel A11 contributionsGreat value for money museum on Krakow's historyGreat museum which allows you to see more of the history of Krakow. Information can be translated into a number of different languages so you don't miss out. We initally thought the museum would be just one room (which showed medival remains) so spent a long time in there- only to find out there was far more outside this room! Including 5 short documentaries in different rooms and various artefacts that were found on the excavation. The guide time says 60mins but we definitely spent longer in there. Great value for money.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 April 2024
- Rosie TLeatherhead, United Kingdom183 contributionsUnderwhelming in many waysOur visit to Rynek Underground didn’t start well - we purchased tickets online from their website however the tickets themselves were not attached to the payment confirmation email. We then went to the actual ticket shop to ask for our tickets only for the cashier to direct us to the Tourist Office across the square where a TO assistant was able to print out our missing tickets. Entrance to the museum is poorly sign posted, as is where to go in the dimly lit museum itself - we almost missed the most interesting bit - a glass walkway over a very old cobbled road and market stalls. Strangely enough the museum employs many attendants who don’t seem to do a lot other than chat to each other. Quite expensive. Skip this unless you really enjoy archaeology or need somewhere to shelter in rainy weather.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 May 2024
- JohnHart_13217 contributionsShort visitThe ticket office for the musuem if the other side of the cloth market in the square, something the guy at the musuem had to constantly tell people - you would have thought they might have made up a sign? We went on a Tuesday so made use of their free ticket offer. I think children might be bored here as a lot of the displays are just old stone walls but there are some videos and a few efects to see. Most of the information is provided with pasters to read (in English as well as Polish). Worth a short visit especially if you get in for free.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 June 2024

The Rynek Underground is a museum under the main square in Krakow which has remnants of Krakow from centuries ago. The majority of the museum is parts of Old Krakow which have been excavated and to get an understanding of what you are seeing you need to use interactive screens. Unfortunately they let way too many people in at the same time to actually be able to effectively look at the screens. If you can't read the screens I think this detracts a lot from what you are seeing (particularly as the lighting is low - presumably to protect the exhibits). After you've been through the ruins and looked at the recovered artefacts there are some very interesting videos which highlight Krakow's history which are well worth a watch.
Would recommend, but try and go when fewer people are present (I did go on a Saturday in February - maybe mid-week would be better? I hate to think how busy it would be in peak tourist season).

As you walk in, there is about 6 different areas showing you 'cobbled pathways'. We would find ourselves walking round and being shown yet another 'cobbled pathway'. Seeing cobbles gets a bit boring after a while...
Not interesting at all and left the museum not learning much about the history. The information screens contain way too much information, too much to stand and read before moving onto the next one. Don't waste your money

This museum is excavated remains of the original buildings on the market square. There is a glass pyramid with fountains that looks down into part of the excavations and the entrance to the museum is just next to that in the Market Hall.
There is lots to do in the museum and plenty of space. Inside is a good mix of modern display types and exhibits and I think children would get a lot from a museum like this. There is plenty on the history of Krakow and Poland as well as the actual market square and lots about how the city was founded and developed.
We spent a couple of hours on a wet Saturday morning and the only place that was crowded was the cafe. The museum was busy but it occupies a large space so it wasn't crowded. My only complaint was a lot of the writing was either unlit or poorly lit so quite a few things I couldn't even read. Everything was in English as well as Polish though so that's good!

Very confusing start to the exhibition - random exhibits of cross-sections of old cobbled streets and artefacts, with little explanation. Poorly lit and poorly positioned text accompanying the exhibits - had to use phone torch to read the text. Not all of the interactive screens worked, so it wasn't possible to access English translations for many of the exhibits.
The second part, the actual excavations of the old streets was incredible. Amazing photographs showing the excavation in progress and amazing that it happened so recently. The information boards at the very end of the exhibition explain all about the excavation and would have been better placed at the start so that visitors had some context and explanation of what the museum is exhibiting!

A lot of money has been spent on this museum but there is room for improvement. There are a lot of interactive screens with good information in several languages but the labelling of much of the archaeology is confusing and limited. Made worse the low light level.
The leaflet given on entry is useless, white lettering on orange in low light can't see it to read.
There is a good series of films telling the history of Poland.
The entry system is strange according to the website and the information on the door entry is in groups of 29 plus a guide and you can book your slot. We just walked in but there is no guided tour. A tour or self guiding with headset would make this more informative and accessible.

Ok so we all love history so thought we would try this exhibition about the medieval life at Krakow.
Firstly the booking office is at the opposite side of the building to the actual entrance which is a bit confusing and seems a silly idea to me. Tickets were 64 zloty for three so reasonable price.
It was very dark inside with most of the written information boards quite low down. We could nearly read most of them due to the poor lighting. The staff we encountered were rather rude, miserable and most unhelpful.
We found it to be rather dull and boring. Lots of old stone, nothing very exciting to see or read about. So much so we decided to leave after 20 minutes when we tried to go out we were refused to leave as we came in and had to go via a long one way system and ended up about 6 feet away from the entry point! Staff were surly and unfriendly. Why can’t they be engaging and helpful it would certainly have made the experience more enjoyable for us and others.
Overall - save your money, don’t bother - as dull as dishwater.

This is at a far end of the Cloth Hall and as you might expect it is an underground museum. When you are down there you see the different levels of the ages of the city and the way one era has been built on top of the other.
Worth a visit and unless you read everything will be no more than an hour

Decided to visit this museum as friend recommended it.
It's absolutely wonderful but certainly not wonderful are the staff that man the ticket centre.
Manners left them at the door.
I asked is this the entrance to the museum gestured to turn left not a word spoken then shoyted at me only because of my age.
Museum really good but exceptionally dark inside and written display cards need to be lit up and at a higher level.
It takes 1 to 2 hours to go round and some people had a guide but many did the tour themselves.

Krakow itself is w world famous tourist destination. Here is yet another attraction there derived from recent archaeological excavations. It is situated predominantly under the old Haberdashers stalls, converted these days to souvenir and artisans’ shops. The building itself is old, goes back to 16th century, some parts are older. You descend to a medieval and earlier beginnings of the Old Market Square, which is arguably the largest of the kind in Europe. No wonder the excavations must have been very rich and rewarding and lasted for many years. The number of the strata (levels), each representing a different era of the past is impressive and so is the number of artefacts found. The exhibition is meant to bring us closer to the lives of our predecessors, who lived and traded there, whatever country they came from and whatever their nationality. It reflects upon the importance of the city, once the seat of Polish kings and the capital of a vast empire. The exhibition is modern, convincing, interesting and informative. Well worth a visit. On a rainy day-there is somewhere to hide, on a hot, summer day-somewhere to escape the heat of the day. There is also a lovely café for your delectation and a museum shop. We enjoyed our visit there a lot.

It was a great little museum, and obviously a lot of work has gone into it to show how Medieval Krakow looked. It is mostly interactive, and some of the touch screens were not very touch friendly! It took a little while for the information to load. The actual parts that showed the original walls and the things they'd found whilst doing the digging was amazing, and probably was the best part of it.
Definitely worth a look but don't expect a wealth of information - also, the lighting is dark and dingy, so difficult to read some of the information!

is there any group discount? Is the tour good in November? How long does it take?
Written 23 October 2019
I’m not aware of a discount but it is cheap and on some days free. The time of year does not matter as it is underground and so weather conditions are not relevant. You need to allow between one and two hours, most of the information is provided by touch screen devices so it will depend on how busy it is. They do ration entrances to reduce delays, but obviously some people will spend longer reading than others. There is an excellent video history to finish where each viewing room covers a specific period, e.g. WW2, fall of communism and much else so if you want to view each of these then prepared for a longer visit. Highly recommended; I’ve done it twice and saw different things the second time

Would you recommend having a guided tour?
Written 19 May 2019
I just went around with my family at our own pace. There are a few interactive screens with English. The are also great documentaries with English subtitles at the end. I wouldn’t say you need a tour guide for the underground just because Of how much there is to see etc.

I agree with some of the other comments - if you do not book tickets (or tickets as part of a pre-booked trip) it may be very busy and you might struggle to get in if you just turn up on the day. If you are going to go to the mine I would definitely pre-book.
