Born Karol Jozef Wojtyła know as pope John Paul II - the Polish Pope if you - like and recorded in history to date the 3rd longest lasting Pope in office (after St. Peter and Pius IX).
The statue of the Pope John Paul II in the in courtyard of the Wawel castle just outside of the main entrance to the Wawel Cathedral is depicting John Paul in the papal clothing with his characteristic staff in his left hand.
The artist managed to capture very vividly the face of the Pope and I have to say there is a remarkable resemblance between the statue and the man.
Visiting is free of charge and if you are visiting the Wawel castle and the Wawel Cathedral you can't miss (just be prepared that typically there a flocks of people at the statue so you have to wait a few min for some pictures)
Definitely worth a few minutes of your time and a few pics.

So many statues of Karol Wojtyla in Poland. The one listed here is probably near Wawel cathedral. There is another one just 300m away in the courtyard of the Archbishop's palace at Kanonicza. Wojtyla at Wawel (erected in 2008) is depicted in a more conventional way: prelate in medieval attire with miter, pensive facial expression. The statue in the palace courtyard dates from 1980 and is more expressive with arms stretched, as if reaching out. I wonder if he liked it. At the time Wojtyla had been pope for just two years.

For an outsider it is difficult to understand why the Polish core of Wojtyla followers seem so enthusiastic about the man. Catholics world over regard a pope as God's first representative on earth and as infallible, but even inside the Catholic church many see the record of Wojtyla as rather controversial. His opposition to contraception (even the use of condoms to prevent the spread of aids), his handling of the sexual abuse scandal (promoting US bishop McCarrick), against the ordination of women, to mention just a few issues. Of course outside the Catholic church his opposition to homosexuality and the right of women to choose for abortion was not appreciated.

This life like statue is located just inside the main entrance to the castle. It is free to enter the castle grounds and view the statue. If you are interested in the Pope this is a worthwhile place to visit.

It's a statue. Of John Paul II. I am not sure how something like this could be either excellent or terrible. I mean, it is just a statue, of John Paul II, in the middle of Krakow.

As others have observed, i’s a statue. But whenever one sees a statue of or a monument to John Paul II anywhere in Poland, it’s just plain special.
Highly Recommended
