It may not be Kraków, but if you're in Olsztyn, it would be a sin not to visit the Old Town. Make sure to take a walk from the Nepomucen Bridge to the iconic High Gate and admire colorful townhouse facades on the way. Many houses boast different animal & human figures and patterns placed there during the post-war restoration. Visit the castle and the cathedral and take a break in one of the many restaurants, cafes or pubs in the area. In the summer, don't forget to taste unusual flavors of ice cream from the small stall next to the old city hall - it's the best in the city. Around Christmas, on the other hand, you will have the opportunity to see colorful illuminations. Take your time, don't expect wonders, and you will enjoy the small city atmosphere and fragments of still present medieval history.

Olsztyn is in the former East Prussia, about 80 miles from the Russian border. It is a lovely town to walk through. The town houses on market square were rebuilt after WWII. Note the decorations on the buildings. You can tell when you are in the fish market by looking at the designs on the pavement. Touching Copernicus's nose is supposed to bring good luck. The High Gate is beautiful. The fresco of the Virgin and Child on the High Gate was a gift to the city from Pope John Paul II. Olsztyn is a beautiful city.

Compact old town in the center, but quite nice. We visited in May and June, of course it’s even more beautiful in summer)
You won't be able to walk there for long, but there is something to see 😊 Neat and well-groomed.

It is just a typical polish city market, I didn't see anything special in this case. Just a bigger empty area with the old city hall in the centre (now it is a library) and tenement houses around it. However, if you are in Olsztyn, it's almost certain that you will see this place.

The Old Town in Olsztyn may be much less spectacular than in so many other cities in Poland but it has its charm and a nice atmosphere. Whenever in Olsztyn we always go for a walk here . We enjoy all the landmarks. Stop at Cafés and stores, sit on benches. This time we bought some souvenirs and the traditional Easter “palms”. Our must-see is always the entry gate to the city.

The town is not bit but we based ourselves here for exploring Northern Poland and we really liked the stay. The actual town is very pretty and easily walkable. We walked it early in the morning and there was hardly anyone around.

Olsztyn has its visitors from abroad, mainly Russians & Germans, who have long tradition & presence in the area.
You cannot count how many Lakes it has in these areas & countryside of outstanding beauty. As Poland is developing fast, so is areas like Olsztyn.
It has Cathedral, old castle & once residence of famous Astronomer, N Copernicus!

Old Town has beautiful quaint restaurants & bars with scatter of shops in between. It has cobble stone roads with no cars allowed giving it pristine, private square, where people sit down & take in the calm!
Beautiful open plan square, resembling museums with it's traditional buildings dating back in time. At night time it gives in to the young with Clubs & Disco bars thriving but no public disturbances of Western European towns.
It's totally safe, although not as multi-cultural & ethnically not diverse community. But this is North Poland.
Old Town has great places to eat at various prices. Try Casablanca, either for Coffee & deserts or go for food menu, absolutely superb cuisine & service. Just close to the Old Town is an icon shop known as Cocktails, which serves coffee & deserts of the highest order, including home made ice creams & juices. All no-alcoholic!!
Summarise, great gem of a place to visit for short trip or family with plenty of outdoor activities & quality food to savour.

We enjoyed our day in this former Prussian town of Allenstein - on a Saturday so the Old Town was busy. Worth seeing the castle, Copernicus statue, the old Olsztyn Gazeta building (the editor was killed by the Nazis in a detention camp) and just wandering around. Plenty of local crafts stalls on the main square and a good choice of restaurants and cafes.

The part I liked the most was walking in the shade down by the river - very pleasant - try to see the rather attractive Fish with child statue. There has also a local brewery nearby with outside tables which is worth a visit.

First stop off should be the Tourist Information office located near the Old Town gate. Very helpful lady and lots of good info on the region.

It's one of the smallest old town I've seen in Poland. Not sure what's going on though with the town as more businesses have been closing down. Unfortunately, the location of the town is not ideal for most tourist. From a personal experience, the town isn't too keen on foreigners owning businesses there and perhaps why it's stagnant and going down. The town needs a major revival and needs to bring in investors and more attractions. Otherwise, it may become a ghost town

Not a very big square but the buildings and architecture is a sight. Plenty of pubs and restaurant. The good weather is lovely to enjoy a mug or two of the local brewery.
