Tripadvisorâs approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This tenement house is a historic tenement house located by the Royal Road in Gdansk. It is sometimes called the home of Speymann or Steffens. Built by Mayor Jan Speyman and recognized as the most magnificent tenement at the Royal Road. The tenement was erected in 1609-1618, according to the design of the architect Abraham van den Blocke. The facade has gilded stone carvings. On the front wall there are reliefs with battle scenes and figures of rulers, including Zygmunt III Waza and Wladyslaw Jagiello. In the central part of the facade there are coats of arms used by Speymann. The facade is maintained in the Flemish mannerism style. This tenement house several times was part of the premises of the residence of Zygmunt III Waza during his stay in Gdansk. It was destroyed in 1945. It was reconstructed on the basis of the remains of the facade in the form of a narrow wall with a height of three floors. Above the entrance there is a sculpture of Mercy with the Latin sentence "Love the virtue, it will make you happy, you will persecute her, it will overthrow you. " Â You must see this.

The Golden House is an interesting and intricate detailed house located on the old town square in central Gdansk. It is easily identified by the ornate facade and just behind and to the right of the Neptune fountain in the square.
Be sure to catch it at the right time when the sunlight hits the top of the facade as it allows a much nicer view and better detailing of the statues adorning the top.

The 17th century Golden House, known for its ornate facade, is one of the photostops on the old town square. It is located near the Neptune Fountain and on the same side of the square as Artus Court - 3rd house from it. The Golden House has 3 stories above a ground floor and is connected by communal walls with its neighbor on either side. The Golden House is actually white, but gold has been judiciously applied on some of the exterior decorations. More noticeable, perhaps, are the 4 white statues on the roof line which seem to be waving - one is holding a golden scale, another a hand held mirror. Below them, are 12 busts of historic figures, some with gilt hair, that are set atop 12 white narrow pilasters. The pilasters, which frame the windows, are arranged in 3 rows with 4 in each row. Each is decorated with the motifs of gilded grape clusters on a vine. Over the windows, are bas-reliefs of battles, each identified with gilt lettering. One almost needs a zoom lens to appreciate the smaller details on those. Over the door, a comely maiden shows her knee while holding a small child in one arm. Probably one's eye is more apt to be looking at the patio cafe in front of this house instead of glancing up higher onto the walls of the house.

Up above on the roof line stand the statues of Cleopatra (with the mirror) and Antigone stand on the 2 front corners. The 2 inside statues are of Oedipus and Achilles (in the armor). There are 12 historical scenes and busts (2 of which are Polish Kings) decorating the front of the building. Probably the most ornate facade in Gdansk, it causes tourists to take a good long look.
The Golden House was built in the early 1600's for a wealthy grain trader who also was the mayor of the city.

This is a stunning building on the main street in the center of the old town. A beautiful fountain lies in front, so the ensemble is lovely and photogenic. Lovely statues up on the top, decorating.

Take your time to admire this facade and look at all the details. We were told that the plan was to cover it with (2,5 kg of) gold. Arguably it is just as beautiful in shining white.
