Your experience in Prague will never be complete if you do not see it from the top. Hillsides, stretched from the west to the north, provide spectacular views of greenish copper cupolas, narrow cobblestone streets, bridges connecting both river banks and green gardens from red-roof tops of centuries-old houses. Prague pulls you into its 1300 year old history. Walking up the hill or stairs to Prague Castle, the historical seat of Czech rulers and the majestic Saint Vitus Cathedral can leave you speechless (and out of breath). Luckily, plenty of terrace cafés overlooking gardens and beautiful parks are available to provide rest and a place to catch your breath again.

- TommoMelbourne, Australia57,134 contributionsGreat views from the towerThe Saint Vitus Cathedral located in the Prague Castle grounds is a Catholic cathedral in Prague, and the seat of the Archbishop of Prague. Until 1997,it was dedicated only to Saint Vitus. It is of Gothic architecture, and is the largest church in the country. The cathedral contains the tombs of many Bohemian kings and Holy Roman Emperors. Do pay the admission fee to go to the top of the tower to see some awesome panaromic views.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 February 2024

My brother and sister in law told me to keep walking past the cathedral and not to look back yet. They asked me to stop and turn around. Wow! Spectacular sight. I was amazed how huge and impressive this cathedral was. My sister in law and I climbed the south tower. I think it was 288 spiral steps. The view from the top was jaw dropping. Such a beautiful city. Loved every moment I was there.Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 15 March 2024
- GabrielaSeevetalSeevetal, Germany10,420 contributionsThe most important and largest religious building in the countrySt. Vitus Cathedral is administered by both the church and the state. For the Czechs, the cathedral is a national symbol because it is where Emperor Charles V is buried. His metal sarcophagus from 1935 stands in the crypt. The cathedral is of a breathtaking size and height decorated with new stained glass windows.Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 March 2024

It took hundreds of years to complete but the final result is quite amazing inside and out. Huge stained glass windows that can only really be appreciated from the inside. Very impressive huge vaulted ceiling. You need to look up and around to see everything. It is a truly majestic space and should certainly be on a visit list when in Prague.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 April 2024
- Serge YdoKoggenland, The Netherlands15,721 contributionsPleasure for the eyesThe enormous St. Vitus Cathedral is without a doubt the most spectacular building within Prague Castle. A Romanesque church, built in 926, originally stood on the site of the current church. But Emperor Charles IV (1316-1378), King of Bohemia, King of Italy and Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire since 1355, ordered its demolition in 1344. of the Romanesque church and the construction of a more impressive church, St. Vitus Cathedral (which is dedicated to three saints, namely St. Vitus, St. Wenceslaus, St. Adalbert). After the construction of the cathedral took place for several years under the direction of a French master builder, the famous Bohemian architect Peter Parler (1330-1399) took over this work (he was also the designer of the Prague Charles Bridge, the Týn Church and the Kutna Hora breathtakingly beautiful St. Barbara's Cathedral). The construction of the church took many centuries and therefore many master builders were involved. For that reason, among other things, the exterior and interior show many architectural styles... predominantly French, German and Bohemian Gothic, but also elements of Baroque and classicism. Construction was not completed until 1929, when the impressive two-tower front was finally completed. Your eyes will be blown away, both in terms of the building on the outside and all the beauty in the church!Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 19 April 2024
- christiano_10Tczew, Poland556 contributionsThe most beautiful cathedral in the world. Seriously. This is REALLY the most beautiful cathedral in the whole world. It's stunning and breathtaking. The stained glass windows are incredibly impressive and beautiful. It's not the best idea, though, in my opinion, to have to pay for the entrance as it is a church where you should be allowed to pray from free. Anyway, visit it. It's a must!Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 24 April 2024

A visit to Prague Castle and its centerpiece, St Vitus Cathedral is a highlight of a trip to Prague. Construction began in 1344 during the reign of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV although it was not until 1929 when it was completed. This is the Czech national church, the site of coronations of Czech kings, where the crown jewels are kept, where the tombs of Czech royalty are found and where patron saints are memorialized. Inside, highlights include the beautiful Mucha stained glass window and the Wenceslas Chapel containing the tomb of the saint and where coronations of Czech kings took place. The exterior of the Cathedral is equally impressive. You can visit the grounds of Prague Castle without an entrance ticket and can even go inside the back of the Cathedral for a quick look, but you will need to purchase a combo ticket for 250 CZK if you want to explore the entire Cathedral. This combo ticket also gets you into The Old Royal Palace, St George Basilica and Golden Lane and is good for 2 days. It is also worthwhile to buy a separate ticket that allows you to climb to the top of the Great South Bell Tower for spectacular views. It can get extremely busy so arrive right at opening at 9am or show up in the late afternoon around 3pm. It takes an hour to appreciate the interior of the Cathedral. However, although the Cathedral closes at 5pm they were rushing visitors out of there starting at 430pm. It is also quite spectacular to return after dark. Although the Cathedral is closed, the grounds of Prague Castle are open until 10pm. It is quieter after dark, and the scene is beautiful with all the buildings illuminated. It is easy to get up here riding Tram 22.

The cathedral is located within the complex called "Prague Castle" and has a paid entrance. The people who sell the ticket tell you an opening time, but the opening depends on particular events within it. I waited in line for over 1 hour. It is a beautiful cathedral, with wonderful architecture and a lot of history. It is worth it. I, who am not religious, thought the church was very beautiful and I recommend it.

Taking note of the not negligible stylistic affinities with the Duomo di Milano, especially in the interior, we preferred to avoid yet another expensive entrance fee and we limited ourselves to admiring this Cathedral from the outside.
We also had the opportunity to observe some operators, looking like students, tinkering with small spatulas trying to apply, with obvious inexperience, a mortar on some parts of the base of the building.
As our Guide pointed out several times, the local limestone with which the Gothic buildings were made, the most important of which is precisely this, does not allow for thorough cleaning because it is extremely crumbly. For this reason all the buildings of that distant era appear very dark, sometimes almost black, especially in particular conditions of natural daylight.
Despite everything, St. Vitus remains a masterful example of Gothic architecture that towers over the city of Prague and is visible almost everywhere with its unmistakable silhouette.

What an amazing building this is⭐️the whole area around the cathedral is amazing with so much architecture inside and outside. Booked it on line so avoided big queues for tickets and got a good price deal👍Met the host initially and he gave an insight of the history of the cathedral and the adjoining palace and gardens which was interesting. Then we walked around at our own leisure with options to have audio. An absolute must to visit even though the steps leading up are a challenge but the views are amazing ⭐️

Prague Castle is a complex of several buildings. The center of it all is St. Vitus Cathedral. We bought a priority ticket online (you can enter the same as with a regular ticket, and you can visit St. Vitus Cathedral, the Old Royal Palace, St. George's Church, and the Golden Lane). The meeting place was in front of the cathedral. There was a ticket booth, so maybe you can buy tickets on the day. Inside, the sunlight coming through the stained glass is just beautiful! I've seen cathedrals in Italy and France, so I didn't think it was that "big" or "majestic," but the stained glass is very colorful. The light that passes through the red stained glass is especially pink. It's very impressive. Also, I didn't do enough research beforehand, but apparently there was stained glass designed by Misha. I saw it when I got back home, and it was in the picture.

Even if you don’t actually go inside, St. Vitas is worth the visit.
1. It’s free to walk around the massive building.
2. The gargoyles, mosaics and spires are so amazing, you can stare at them for hours.
3. It’s located in the grounds of Prague Castle, which makes it a 2-4-1 visit.
We paid a guide for our tour, but you could easily look up info on line and guide yourself.

It’s certainly tricky to judge, having visited some of undoubtedly the world’s most iconic and gorgeous cathedrals and religious buildings in Rome, but St. Vitus ranks high on my list of the most stunning interiors of any cathedral I’ve seen. A few notable areas were roped off during my visit, but it hardly made an impact on my experience. It is definitely a shame there’s an admission fee…but as a wheelchair user, I couldn’t help but notice the ticket office (where presumably visitors must buy their tickets to any of the sites in the castle) had several steps leading up to it. So I drove up to the man working the entrance to the cathedral and told him I couldn’t buy a ticket because of the stairs—and he just let me in for free. Essentially free entry for disabled folks?

We could see the cathedral from various locations around Prague and decided to take a tram there. Easy to get there via the tram network we hadn't realised that it was also Prague Castle
Yes you do have to pay to get in but the basic ticket included 3 other entrances to other parts including St George's Basilica & the castle.
It was a bit chaotic getting tickets there as large queues & there are lots you can add to it including audio equipment, guided tours, access to the tower, licence to take photos so it can work out quite expensive.
We chose the basic entry fee which can be used over 2 days but only 1 entrance to each location.
You can see the cathedral from the entrance to the grounds but it's only when you get through the archway that the size hits you.
The cathedral is stunning, yes it was quite busy but everyone seemed very respectful and moved around quietly.
Beautiful stained glass windows throughout lots of very old private burial. areas.
We really enjoy the peace and tranquility of a church or cathedral even though we are not religious we still live the history and architecture.
You are able to walk around the interior and exterior of the cathedral which gives you the perspective of the size & grandeur.
Definitely worth a visit

This cathedral is located inside the castle and can be seen well from the old town being on a hill. Outside it is imposing, especially from behind with its rampant arches and in front with gargoyles and rose window; on the side instead there is the golden door with beautiful mosaic on the Last Judgment. inside (for a fee) there is the chapel of St. Wenceslas, the tomb is St. John Nepomuk and the royal oratory. You can also climb the bell tower (again for a fee) from where you can enjoy beautiful views over the whole of Prague.

My first time "witnessing" this Cathedral, I was sitting at home, wide-eyed, watching Rick Steves tour Prague, and subsequently, touring this Cathedral. I knew then I had to see it in person. It's magnificent and easily one of the most beautiful places you have the opportunity to step into. If you can only step into one church in Prague, make it this one. You will not be disappointed. The interior gives a medieval castle vibe, and is full of art. Take your time to absorb it all, no one is chasing you out. This cathedral is in the Gothic architectural style and its exterior is as impressive as its interior.
Lines to get inside can be long, so make sure you buy your entry ticket (just across the way from the entrance) before getting in line. No ticket. No entry.

Are most of the famous sites to visit very busy in June?
Written 3 February 2020
I’m thinking they will be busy in June because it’s the summer. I was there in the winter and there was a lot of people. I imagine the summer is busier. However, if you go to certain places in the morning there isn’t a lot of people yet.

Will there be a Mass on Wednesday August 21. What time? Is there a way of getting to the Church without climbing many stairs or climbing up a steep hill. We are in our 80s and don’t do stairs or steep hills very well.

Use tram No. 22 to Pohořelec and have an easy stroll down the hill. In 10 minutes you reach Hradčany square. Entrance and security check on the left side of the castle. Mass is held on weekdays at 07:00 (morning).

Buena suerte
