This is a great park and I'm so glad that I went. Originally Bing showed a picture of the Bastei Bridge in the park as one of their wallpapers and I became so taken with it that I did some research and booked a hiking trip. The Saxon Switzerland National Park lies on the border between Germany and the Czech Republic and you can easily access the park from either country. I went from Prague on a 14 hour day tour and thoroughly enjoyed it. The rock formations are captivatingly awesome and the bridge lives up to it's reputation. Because our tour left very early we ended up being the first on the bridge so the photos we got were spectacular. Also great views of the Elbe River. Not much of the original fort remains. After lunch we hiked down the side of the mountain to a river gorge, walked along it until we took a dinghy through the sandstone walls of the Kamenice Gorges. Absolutely worth it. Good hiking shoes are a must. Fortunately my tour was well paced with rest stops and meals.

Mountain range with wonderfully walks and unique sights to behold. There are rivers, dark fairytale forests and immense rocky formation and gorges to look at and be amazed by.
The Czech side is less develop so more for adults as there are not many parking places to get close to sights with little kids, like on the German side.
But then it's also much quieter and undisturbed.

We did 2 hikes: the Pravcica Brana/Kaminice Gorge loop and another out of Jetrichovice.
Pravcica Brana/Kaminice Gorge hike: We started from U Forta (right by the information building) in Mezni Louka and hiked west along the red trail for 1-1.5 hours to the Pravcica Brana - this section of trail was beautiful. It costs 75 Kr/$3 per person to walk to the top of the cliffs at the Pravcica Brana. You can get lunch there at the cafe. We continued west along the red trail for another hour to get to Hrensko (not as beautiful as the first part of the hike) where we stopped for a late lunch at one of the cafes. From Hrensko we hiked upstream along the Kaminiche following the yellow trail and taking both boat rides (maybe 60 Kr/person for each section). Again, there is a cafe on the trail section between the two boat rides (Edmonds and Wild Gorge sections). The boat rides are not going to be in English. We continued along the yellow trail and eventually took the blue trail back to Mezni Louka. There are many people, blazes, and sign posts along the way so you will not get lost. The whole day lasted from 10a-5pm for us (30 yo fit people at a moderate pace).
Jetrichoviche: We drove to Jetrichoviche from Mezni Louka (10 min, but could have taken the bus from the stop just across the street from U Forta) and hike the red trail north until it turned west where we took the green trail back to Jetrichovice. There was a small (10-12 car) free parking lot near the trail head which is on the west end of town - we didn't know exactly where we were going but found it without much trouble. This hike was much less crowded, but still plenty of people, and equally as scenic as the Pravcica Brana hike. The hike is a stair master for the first third taking you up through beautiful sandstone formations to lookout towers. From there it levels out and goes west for one last lookout point before you catch the green trail back to Jetrochovice. The hike took about 3 hours. If you wanted, you could follow the yellow trail towards a town and cafe at roughly the half way point of the hike, but we packed a small lunch.
Our original plan had been to take the bust to Jetrichovice and hike the red trail all the way back to Mezni Louka - we estimated the distance as similar to the Pravcica Brana loop described above. But I think the most scenic part of the trail is directly out of Jetrichovice. You can buy a park map for a few dollars that has the length of trail segments.
While we enjoyed the cafe lunches, it would have been nice to find a market and pick up some snack food.

We're went to visit Pravcicka Brana, we're parked on street parking designated in locality Hrensko.
The parking belongs and is run by local authority. The parking was nearly full on our arrival at 11.30 AM and park lady directed us to place. We paid 120 Czech Korun ( £4 ) for stay over 4hrs.
Upon our return we found out that only a few cars are left parked, attendant's shed is locked and no one watching over Car park. Our car was broken into and stuff was stolen from boot.
If you visit similar attraction we recommend: Park close to city centre, front of hotel etc, rather than on designated (far from crowd) place to avoid attraction to your foreign car. As according to locals this is happening very often. Complete procedure from calling police, securing evidence and making protocol about incited took over 4 hours.

Hřensko (German: Herrnskretschen) is a small village in the České Švýcarsko (Saxon Switzerland) on the border with Germany. It is situated at the confluence of the Kamenice and Labe rivers and was established during the 15th century as a trading settlement.
The area around Hrensko is part of National Park - Bohemian Switzerland (Saxon Switzerland)
I spent 5 days in a little B & B Pension “Na Vyhlidce” in Mesna. The location was perfect. I walked down the steep hill to the Wild Klamm (Soutesky) (Gorges) and took a ride in a sort of large pant on the Kamenice river. Well worth doing, beautiful scenery and carved Vodnik (Water Geist) poking from the rocks only added to the attraction. The walk back up the steep hill was somewhat of a challenge.
From Hrensko there is another gorge s.c. Edmunds Klamm (Soutesky) and again ride on a pant is recommended.
The National Park offers plenty of wonderful walks through the woods, be it Pravcicka Brana (Prebischtor) or a small drive to Bastei. Sandstone boulders, rocks and mountains are quite something special and worth the effort.
The Old mediaeval fortress Königstein is also a very popular destination.
And if there is a need for some pampering, how about visiting Bad Schandau Spa facilities. The spa facilities and extensive Botanical Garden (Pflanzengarten Bad Schandau) with over 1,500 species of plants is also worth seeing. Bad Schandau is about 6 kilometres from the Czech frontier and 33 km southeast of Dresden. In 1480 Prince Ernest of Saxony granted the right to Bad Schandau to bear a coat of arms and a seal. A day excursion recommended.
A trip to Dresden on River Elbe was also one of the highlights of my Hrensko & České Švýcarsko experience.

I have been hiking these sandstone mountains in the Czech Republic for years, there are many safe and well marked trails. I usually take a friend with me for the hike, and often times we are the only ones there. This year I took a train to Decin, then a local bus to Mezni Louka, where I hiked to the Pravcicka Brana, Ate lunch at a restaurant before departure, there are meals available at Pravcicka Brana at the restaurant , but it is much more expensive and the reputation for service and cleanliness is not the best. They also charge a fee to go on their terrace - for the view. On the way back we waited at the bus stop for 2 hours, later found out our bus was involved in a accident and it took 2 hours for a replacement bus to come. Beware! There is only one bus route back to Decin, another option would be to take car to Hrensko. I would also advise purchasing a map at a local book store, that shows all hiking trails in the region. The green maps by Klub Ceskych Turistu are the best.

It's a 1.5K walk to reach the Gorge from the nearest car park, that costs 1E a day, pretty good value. Once at Edmond Gorge you take a river punt (25 to a boat, ask for Seniors discount, about 50%) up the navigable stretch. Disembark, then if you wish walk 20 mins to the next Gorge and another river trip. At the end of this one you can walk to a village restaurant for a meal and drink and catch a bus back, or do the trip in reverse. The walk is pretty much on the flat footpath along the river, easy walking compared with Pravicika Brana which we did the previous day lol. The gorge can have a cold wind blowing through it so make a decision as to what to wear on the day, we wore anoraks in April and were still a bit cold on the boat trip once we stopped walking.

Very nice place to stay. We spent there 3 days and could stay more. The scenery is really beautiful. You can make short walks around o nice 20 km round walking from Hreńsko to Mezna through Pravcicka Brana and then taking yellow path back to Hreńsko. I recommend it because it easier- most of the way goes down :). You can have a lunch in Mezni Louka(mid way). The cost of lunch is aprox.4-5 Euro, twice cheaper than i Germany:).
Hreńsko offer to the visitors a lot of nice restaurants and tavernas. You wont be bored there:).

Visiting Edmund's Gorge in Hrensko - Czech-Saxon Switzerland is a wonderful experience and an easy hike even for small children, seniors and dogs. Families and couples walk from Hrensko (paid parking available) along the wild river Kamenice in a deep canyon lined with bizarre huge rocks. After about a mile and half walk there is a small wharf, where you may board comfortable small boats to admire the canyon from a new perspective. The ride with a boatman and his stories (in Czech and German) takes about half an hour. Then you may return to Hrensko or walk again about a mile and get in a new boat for a 15 minutes ride. You may then continue along a steep tourist trail to new places or return along the same route. The whole pleasant excursion takes about half a day.

This is worth the hike and the time. Parts of the hike can be tough but once up top there are restaurant and shops for water and items. Great view of the surrounding. Can be tough with little ones though.

Hi,
for planning day trips you can try the "mapy . cz" portal. It has an english mutation and you can swith to an "outdoor" map, which shows all the official hiking trails, POIs and more. You can also use a trip planning tool to measure the hike length.

Hello
I’m planning to go along with my five year old and my husband to this place from Wroclaw.
What are the best modes of transport from Wroclaw to this park and it it possible to both theses parks in a day?
Kindly help me for the the same.
Thanks

I am sitting here at Heathrow right now, on my way to Prague, and read George's post while researching Pravcicka brana. I had considered a formal tour from Prague, but really like the idea of hiring a car and driving there to explore independently. My biggest concern, of course, is parking and making sure I don't get in trouble with my rental car.
Any advice you can give me? If I rent a car and park closer to town (Hrensko), will I be okay? Are hiking trails still pretty accessible from town?
Any advice is appreciated. -Brian, Denver, CO, USA

There are few parking lots (i think 3) close to the hiking trails. To get space at the closest one you want to get yourself there earlier than the others (by 10 am or so). We parked at Mezní louka and made pretty great hiking loop from there via Pravcicka brána and back via the river gorges all about 15 km. Enjoy

Hi, I would like to explore both Czech and Saxon Switzerland and moving on to Dresden thereafter. Would it be recommended if I base myself in Dresden for all days? It seems like there's not much accommodation choices left for me in Hrensko area as I'll be going in less than a month's time.
