- Shane BTe Awamutu, New Zealand812 contributionsCool old medieval type town. Our first glimpse of a medieval type town had a real vibe about it. Is in a curve of a river so nearly surrounded by water lots of places to sit and drink or have a meal overlooking the river. Lots of little curio nick nacky type shops heaps of history, narrow cobbled streets, could have happily spent a day looking around. Worth going a little out of your way to visit even stay a nightVisited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 November 2023
- Maureen HTroy, New York25 contributionsWell worth a visitYes, it has become a tourist site and yes, it is still worth visiting regardless. Wonderful old world charm as you wander the cobblestone streets next to the winding river. Do-able as a day trip from Prague, better as an overnight.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 May 2024
- Valerie BUnited States85 contributionsCharming town. A must seeI’ve traveled a lot and have seen beautiful places, but this places takes the cake. Eye candy everywhere you look. The only negative is how rude the locals are to tourists. I go out of my way to be polite and not be the “ugly American tourist,” but they are so rude. I walked out of a few places because of it and they lost my business.Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 26 May 2024

We walked around the village and had an amazing lunch at Krcma v Satlavske Ulici that our driver suggested. We would have walked right past it had he not pointed it out. It might be hard to get around if you have any mobility problems.Visited July 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 26 July 2024
- paolovbossiThe Hague, The Netherlands851 contributionsUnmissable stop in Czech Republic. It is a jump back in the past. The village of Cesky is extremely small but very well preserved and so fascinating. The river cuts in two the village with the castle that dominates the village. There is nothing special but it is so amazing to walk in the small streets, looking at the coloured houses and to the boutiques of this place. Unmissable in a trip to Czech.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 15 August 2024

When I was last here in 2008 it was truly magical. Old murals, stenciled patterns on the walls, the patina of history written on every building made the experience unique.
But I’ve returned to find that old beauty scrubbed away and a fresh coat of paint slapped over the old murals, the old timepieces. They’ve used the tourist dollar to scrub away the magic and make it more like any other staré město in a tourist city.
Change is inevitable, and I find that my old age brings much of this sort of complaint in my travels. But I will always treasure the Cesky Krumlov of 2008, the Ljubljana staré město of yesteryear before tourism brought posh stores to Main Street, etc. etc.
“You can’t go home”.

The centre itself, speaking about architecture and vibe, is amazing and beautiful. A lot to look at. Restaurants are though full of "fake" super pricy food. Fresh grilled fish was a fried frozen mass.

I visit this city, my favorite, every year and always find something new to admire. Given the Covid 19 situation this year, there are only individual local tourists and families in the streets, all large international groups are missing, making it the ideal time to enjoy the absolute beauty of the historical houses. Some stores are closed, but there are plenty that are opened, and almost all restaurants are waiting for their guests to come and enjoy their wonderful food.

The town Cesky Krumlov attracts tourist because of its pretty photo shoot, especially during earlier morning and late evening. However, be aware that the road to Cesky Krumlov is difficult to drive (you will notice the difference once you cross the Austria/Czech Republic or Germany/Czech Republic Boarder. We have also experienced a tree falling on a major artillery road, which can cause delay in the traffic. Fortunately, the traffic in Czech Republic is very light.
The price is high (ATM charges 190 CZK fee or about 8 EUR). And the local customer service is terrible. Please refer our review on the relevant hotel stay.

I skipped Cesky last time I was in the Republic, and sorely wanted to go, for twenty years. When at last I made it, I was overwhelmed. This is the perfect little European town--something straight out of Studio Ghibli, if you know what I mean. When we were her it snowed...perfectly magical, impossible to get lost, and worth at least a day.

Two days is plenty to take in the town. We had three so able to leisurely explore. Highly recommend going during the week if possible as weekends are busy. A stroll all along the river is nice as you can explore beyond the old town area.

Absolutely loved Cesky Krumlov. We stopped on our drive from Prague to Vienna. About 2 hours from Prague. Took a little work to find the parking outside the city center, but WOW. So picturesque! A day with stops here and in Holasovice was one of our favorites on a 2 week trip of Germany, Czech Republic and Austria, where every day was incredible.

We were so happy to be able to visit Cesky Krumlov on our recent trip to Europe. This pretty little historic town is just wonderful for exploring! It is fantastic that so much of the original architecture has been preserved. Walking up and down the cobblestone streets, although challenging, is very fun. Everyone calls this a "fairytale" village.
The views from the upper part of the castle are quite spectacular. The town is encircled by the river, and all the little red roofs really stand out. We looked at the outside of the castle, but sadly did not have the time to enter and tour. There are also lovely gardens nearby.
There are now three bears in the moat, and we watched the bear keeper feed them. They seem to have very high standards for their care.
We ate an excellent lunch in a lovely and charming restaurant, and spent some time shopping and strolling. The town is famous for gingerbread cookies and garnet jewelry. Most of the stores in this old section seem dedicated to tourists.
Cesky Krumlov is certainly a very special place to visit. Highly recommended!

Cesky Krumlov is quaint, charming, and historic. A towering castle, a lazy river wending around the city, a beautiful church, charming cafes and restaurants...what's not to like?
I imagine in the high season (i.e., summer), it's probably quite busy (and maybe less than ideal), but in the low season (November), it's wonderful! Sure you'll have to bundle up, and maybe wear a rain jacket, but there are plenty of cafes and restos to pop into for something hot, and you'll have the castle and other sites/sights mostly to yourself.

This is a beautiful little town. Perfect especially for a romantic night or two. I saw it on a travel video one week before my trip and altered my itinerary to stay there one night. It turned out to be a trip highlight. I recommend Hotel Dvorak there also and have dinner with them on the riverside.

There is no parking in the center. There are two pay parking lots on the outskirts. In order to take your car to the center of town you have to purchase a permit and it is only good for 30 minutes. Just enough time to unload or load your car.

Does anyone know the names of private tour guides for CK?
Written 21 August 2017
We booked private walking guides through GoRealEurope. Our guide Teresa was fun, knowledgeable and full of interesting history.
Written 24 August 2017
Tell me honestly - do you think CK is suitable for two 75-year-old ladies who like comfort, good food, beautiful scenery, buildings of historic interest etc. We rather like hotels with plenty of stars also.

Hello Celia. It is absolutely beautiful but the cobblestone streets are a bit daunting.
The food was great and so affordable. As we came in for only one day on our Viking cruise I'm not sure how you would navigate if you were staying for a period of days. The castle is up a steep grade but otherwise it is just the cobblestone streets. Skip the marionette museum it's up three flights of very steep stairs and sad that it is so underutilized.
Otherwise enjoy the fairytale town!

Светка77777 здравствуйте. Собираемся посетить Крумлов перед рождеством, можно попросить как связаться с Дашей?
Written 8 August 2017

Hii BCbike,
I know that Cesky Krumlov is an interesting town. I would have a full 1 day walking around in the city, do you think that is enough?? Or should I take 2 full days visit all the places??
Thank You very much for your advise,
SAM

I was there a couple of years ago, absolutely loved it! It's like something out of a fairytale book. To answer your question, I'd probably set aside 2 days - That way you can truly take in everything without rushing.
There are lots of little shops and beautiful eating places that are too good to miss. Not to mention the wonderful tourist attractions mentioned in the other posts. But also, it's just it's just beautful to go for leisurely walks (esp along the river), and just soak up the atmosphere at your leisure - Yep, 2 days ;) Have a wonderful trip!

Planning on spending 2 nights in Cesky Krumlov before heading to Prague. What is the best way to get from CK to Prague, bus or train?
Written 12 February 2017
Hi Dave,
Sorry for late answer - hope it's not too late... Probably the best way is to take a bus from Cesky Krumlov to Ceske Budejovice (each hour, about 30 minutes ride), and then change to train to Prague. The bus station in CK is noticeable closer to city center than the train; in CB bus station is just next to train.
If you'll choose a train only option - it could take more time, and you will have to change at CB.
On the other hand, train ride from CK to CB could be funny - usually, these are short trains of 2 or even 1 car.
Enjoy your trip!

Greetings, greetings, just came back from Cesky Krumlov (when i see CK its reminds me of Calvin Klein) lol lol lol - there are 2 1/2 parking places for tourist outside the old town, walking distance
One is huge just at the main road, it is right next to the Wall where the castle is located, this one is recommended because there is always a spot
The second one is near the entrance to the old town, if you don't have reservation at any Hotels inside the old town don't drive in there, you need a permit and the police is always looking for for tourist that did not see the sign at the entrance
This 2. parking space is on a 2 -one way street - one street goes into town and the other follows a one way street back to the main road - on that street that are lots of bed and breakfast, there all have their own parking spot, so no parking for you but somewhere in the middle is a public parking space i guess for 5 cars only (that's why the 1/2)
Just on that 1/2 parking space you need coins to pre pay your parking, the others you can pay later with coins or bill (only Czech Crown)
That's it, i hope i could help a little, if yes give me a dumps up for others travelers to see - drive save - buckle up and enjoz the ride

I will be on a river cruise and will be able to visit either Cesky Krumlov or Salzburg but not both. Does anyone who has seen both have a recommendation as to which to choose?
Written 20 May 2016
Salzburg is much bigger and would require some sort of logistics planning. CK is small, no need for taxis, buses etc, just use your feet. Salzburg is way more expensive, if that is a consideration for you. Both are very picturesque but I feel Saltsburg needs more than a day to visit properly.
I would vote for CK.
