Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Makaravank is a small and rather modest monastery located high in the mountains. The place is not as touristy as, for example, Haghartsin, so there were no crowds here. There is a source of drinking water, but there was no toilet. The road to it is very good, new asphalt has recently been laid. Along the way, the views are simply stunning - alpine meadows, herbs and mountains. Not far from the monastery there was an apiary where they bought delicious mountain honey and remembered this beautiful place for a long time.

As I read from the reviews of some time ago, the road to get to this remote monastery on the Tavush hills, at least in the last 5 Kms, was terrible, not recommended for non-4WD vehicles. Today - May 2023 - and I don't know for how long, things have not been like this at all: the road is narrow and winding, but well paved, and therefore the excursion to Makaravank is a completely normal experience.
This novelty has perhaps somewhat diminished the charm of the monastery. Which in any case remains valuable for many reasons: for its antiquity (the origins date back to the 10th century), for the architectural beauty, for the complexity of the churches (four) that make up the complex, for the polychromies that the different stones used in the construction allow to appreciate, for the marvelous bas-reliefs that decorate various parts of the main church, for the chapel of Surp Astvatsatsin, an unusual example of a miniature church.
So overall, even if you have already seen many ancient Armenian monasteries, don't overlook this one (said by one who is on his third trip to Armenia).

Absolutely I liked that. We were there after a long day sightseeing and driving. Me the driver was tired there but we have find water, opened the tents and cook dinner in the monastery courtyard. From dusk to dawn no man appeared except us - 3 people in 2 tents. At night some jackals or hyenas first sniffed our tents and then weaved. Nothing bad happened.

The monastery is quite far away from the village, lost among the trees. As we turn off the Lada, we heard somebody singing. There were only three priests doing the Liturgy in the Church. We were the only attendees. At the end we were invited to have a peaceful and delight lunch with them among the ruins, peacefully talking of the monastery, the village, the Armenia and Italy. One of the best moment of the whole travel in Armenia

In Armenia there are many monasteries and many of them are in the forests or on the mountains, because of wars and enemies. This is one of the oldest ones and you can find lot of Khachqars (Armenian cross-stones) here. It is not visible even from the closest village.

Few kilometers away from Ijevan, in the middle of a lush forest, lies this lonely monastery. This place is is very far from the most common turistic places in Armenia, but it's worth the small detour if you are near. The best moment of the day to visit it is in the afternoon, since in the morning you'll face backlight problems. The road to reach the Monastery is in terrible conditions, so I strongly advice to use a 4WD vehicle to reach it.

Makaravank is my very favorite monastery in a country of hundreds if not thousands of churches and monasteries. This off the beaten path and therefore more peaceful to visit. The structures themselves are beautiful, though perhaps some of the other places like Tatev and Noravank have more spectacular views. I strongly recommend a visit if you're going to Sevan or Goshavank anyway.
