As part of our 1-day guided tour of Ronda, last Saturday, 6th January 2024, we stopped by this interesting tiled mural which showed an aerial view of the city. It is located at the southern end of the Puente Neuvo opposite Calle Tenorio. Our local guide speaks 4 languages and he gave interesting commentaries throughout our whole 1-day tour of Ronda. Thank you Sir for making our 1-day guided tour of Ronda so interesting. Have a nice day✌✌✌

It’s an interesting mural made of tiles near the New Bridge. We stopped for a few minutes to see this colourful „picture” on the wall and read the quots from romantic travellers. It’s worth stopping and taking a photo.

Shortly after entering Ronda's old town from Puente Nuevo, you come across this small square. On a building wall in the square, you will notice an old depiction of the city, made of colorful tiles. It is a tribute to all the famous travelers who passed through Ronda and mentioned it in their writings, contributing to its legend. Personalities such as Orson Welles, Ernest Hemingway, Madonna, Rainer Maria Rilke, lived here for some time and were inspired by the city. In their honor this ceramic composition has been created, which is worth exploring and taking a photo in front of.

This attractive ceramic mural shows a view of the dramatic scenery of the city of Ronda, as it were seen by a drone from the Western side. It was made by local potters, signed IEAS Martin Rivero BackArte Ronda. In 2013 it was decided to place phrases and thoughts about Ronda uttered by romantic travellers throughout time. So this is not a very old Mural altogether but it is attractive to have a look at and take a photo of.

If you are wandering the city of Ronda in the region of the Palacio de Congresos you will see, on one of the exterior walls, a group of ceramic tiles under the title of Viajeros Romanticos. This group represents the thoughts and phrases that were written by some of the Romantic travellers that have visited in the past and felt moved to demonstrate their impressions of Ronda. The decision to present this display came about in 2013 at the time of the 6th Congress of History of Ronda, which in this year was dedicated to Romanticism.

The industrialisation of the northern European countries during the 18th and 19th centuries precipitated the destruction of many of the natural landscapes and engendered demographic movements of the population between the countryside and the city. The loss of the natural landscapes meant that alternatives were sought by the younger generation in the form of a unique journey to explore the roots of civilisation, the so-called Grand Tour. The beauty of picturesque Spain, the splendour of the European mountains, the archeological remains of Greece and Italy were the favourite destinations. The attractions concentrated on the sensations of the visitors rather than the influence of enlightenment and reason. Focused use of adjectives such as spectacular, enormous, impressive, sublime, ethereal and lavish describe landscapes idealised through the eyes of writers and artists.

These romantic travellers got the high society of northern Europe to look to the south and in it find their missing paradise. Their poetry, illustrations, writings, guides, works and novels assisted in forming the topics that still surround us today, from bandits to bull-fighters and maestros to mountains. They also helped us to value our traditions and heritage. Their passionate outputs first encouraged hundreds that led to thousands and then became millions of people, looking to pursue the Grand Tour. Perhaps these ceramics serve as a modest tribute to these early tourists.

Thanks for reading this and if you've found it helpful I'd appreciate a ‘thumbs up’ below.

This is a lovely mural that gives you a great idea of the old city. You cannot really miss it as you take a walk through the town. Plenty of shops, restaurants and cafes nearby.

Stop by the Plaça to reflect for a few moments between view points for the new bridge. The map of Ronda is quite interesting as are the eclectic quotes from famous visitors.
