Chachani is an incredible trek! The views from the top are amazing! I went with Peru Swiss Tours ( office on Jerusalem street). I took the 2 day/ 1 night tour; which allows for extra altitude acclimation time. The guide, Alfredo, knew the mountain so well. He paced us from the beginning of the hike into base camp. And thank goodness! Unless you are a professional climber at high altitudes; the pace is so important. He knew all the flora and lots of history of the area.
It was freezing up there, literally. Our tour company provided the right clothes, correctly sized, and in really good condition. This was so important!
Be prepared physically, as 18,225 ft is no joke. ( read 13 things to know in the reviews - it is great advice)
Enjoy the hike up! It has views of so many of the surrounding volcanos and mountains.
Have fun and enjoy!

Hiked this with Weiki tours on August 6-7 2017 as a solo female. I was put in a group with 2 guides and 8 other people (only one other female) and I booked through Mb backpackers hostel for about $110 USD. We left at 8am, drove to the 5000m trailhead then hiked to our base camp located at 5200m elevation. Weiki provides sleeping bags, tent and snow pant/jacket/glove rentals and you can rent hiking poles and a headlamp for an extra 30 sol altogether. Hiking boots are also available for rent. We hung out at base camp, had a meal then went to bed at 6pm. Woke up at 1 and started hiking around 2, and summited around 6:45am. This hike was amazing but I really felt the altitude and the cold at around 5600m. I kept going but it was NOT easy - quite hard to breathe and I started getting really cold hands - the guides said some women can’t make it past a certain point due to cold in extreme ties (a female circulation thing). I wore a thin pair of gloves under my ski gloves but would recommend at least 1 more thick pair under - you need them! The summit was amazing and well worth it. Was absolutely exhausted on the way down but was quick to ascend!
Don’t attempt this hike if you haven’t been at at least Arequipa’s elevation for 2 days before this hike - everyone in our group summited but we had two people throwing up and really slowed down because of the altitude!

My wife and I booked to climb Chachani the day after we returned from the Colca Canyon tour. We were a little sore already but are fairly tough. We completed the first days climb easy enough but this was only a two hour hike. The test was to come on day two. We were woken at 12.30am given a simple breakfast and we set off. It was very cold, windy, steep, dark and obviously an oxygen poor environment. About half way up the third group member pulled out as he had been suffering from altitude sickness. He headed back to came while my wife and I soldiered on. It was a mental battle to keep going but worth it as getting to the top was awesome. Our guide looked after us the whole way. It was very hard however. If you are not fit or you think you might struggle with the altitude or -10° temperatures then don't bother. It's a mental struggle the whole way.

The tour was suppose to include an English speaking guide, water and snacks,  maintained bikes with a repair kit and spare parts, finish at 2. None of these things were included!!!!

Our tour was changed to accommodate requests of two other passengers, which was fine I suppose.  But  it meant spending ages in a car and stopping every ten yards to take a photo when anyone wanted to stop. (How many alpaca photos can anyone need????) It was frustrating as it was advertised as an active tour and from 7 30 (they were late) to  1 pm we've only been out the car for photo stops.
No water was included, no snacks no food!!!! We were quite in prepared and starving by the time the biking started.

The mountain biking: first of all, it's not technically mountain biking, it's cycling down a gravel road we had driven up on a very dodgy, poorly maintain hard tail bike.  (Whilst starving, did I mention they still haven't fed us!!!) The path has LOADS of sandy patches lasting 100-500m at a time, making it hard to maneouver if you had a decent boke, let alone these ones, plus massive trucks coming in both directions which you had to dodge!

The Bikes: poorly maintained hardtails that weren't fit for purpose! I got a flat and he didn't have a spare tube, just a spare wheel that didn't fit my bike properly. After a bit of tinkering with it, he got it to work. I pointed out it was a bit loose still but he said it will be fine, mtb usually are a bit loose to accommodate the suspension.  It wasn't fine!  A km down I got thrown off and the wheel became disconnected from the bike. The bike, the front wheel and myself ended up seperated by a couple of meters, luckily in one of the many sand patches mention above.
The guide had no clue how to fix the bike! (I knew more about them than he did!) He just said no spare tubes, no repair kit as advertised and I spent the rest of the journey back in the car again! He didn't speak English and my Spanish is limited.  It was so frustrating! He said the bikes aren't his problem he's just a driver!  Grrrrr

We arrive at the meeting place and my friend wasn't there (she was ahead of us by the time we fiddled with my bike and got it back on the truck).  After 10 minutes of faffing he deemed it okay to look for her.  (There was a single turn off, she had obviously missed it) He sent another member of the group off to intercept her.  We eventually found my friend but now had lost the other guy. We drove for 10 minutes in random directions until eventually we found him.

We got at 5 pm. Starving! Taking hangry to new levels!!!! When we complained, the  tour organiser said he would speak to the driver and come to the hotel at 9 that evening to sort things out. We waited until 10 and he didn't show.  Grrr!!!!!

On summary! Don't do it! Poor bikes, scenery is okay but not worth the time spent in a car! If you choose to do so, bring plenty of food and water!!!!

In 2013 I hiked Misti volcano with Quechua Exploring Agency and had very positive experience. This year I came back to Arequipa with strong desire for climbing the second, higher pick near the city - volcano Chachani. Obviously I started looking for the agency I have already known, and then I read all bad reviews about trips with this company. I've started wondering what could have changed during these 2 years? With all prejudices I booked a trip to Chachani with them, mostly because of the lower price and self-confidence on my own mountain-hiking experience; I wasn't beginner so I could reach the summit even with bad-prepared expedition. But all my worries were pointless, because trip was as great as the previous one. We left Arequipa in group of 8 people and 4 reached the summit. 4 people who didn't make it could blamed only themselves - were just bad-prepared. For example, one couple came to 5000 masl directly from the coast in less than 48 hrs; it is not possible for human organism to acclimatize well in so short time. However, our guides (we had 2) cared about every single person and treated them with respect; when somebody got sick, one guide could walk him down, and then came back to the group. Same with the equipment - in the office they gave us all we needed. Any further lack resulted from an inattention of the tourists in the agency - like one person forgot about bringing the flashlight to the camp, even we all knew we would start hike during the night, and stuff asked us about additional equipment multiple times. And yup, equipment is not brand-new, but it's not a fashion week - it's just sufficient if you don't have your own.

I had a wonderful time and personally couldn't find any disadvantages. Guides did everything that we had a great, positive experience, even those who couldn't reach the top. Chachani is a beautiful mountain, we had great weather and on the way up we saw herds of vicuñas and guanacos. But before you will decide to hike Chachani, remember: maybe it's a popular tourist route, but it's still located in high mountains. You should be at least little experienced, because even the best tourist agency could not think for yourself.

I did a half day mountain biking trip down Chachani with a couple of friends. We went with 'Expeditiones y Aventuras', a tour company with an office near the Santa Catalina Monastery. We were driven in a 4x4 up to about 4000m and biked down again into Arequipa.

I had never really been mountain biking before, so it was a bit of a steep learning curve (no pun intended) but it was certainly possible. The volcano is a fairly gentle slope, so you're not going to plummet off a cliff if you misjudge things a bit, but you may hurt yourself falling off the bike. Most of the road is very bumpy and there are stones/rocks everywhere that can throw you off. With no previous experience I took one nasty tumble but still had a great time! You also get some some pretty good views, especially of the neighbouring El Misti volcano, and can tell your friends that you mountain biked down a volcano (reason enough to do it in my book)!

We were provided with a helmet and knee and elbow pads (you definitely need these). The bikes themselves were not in tip-top condition, but were perfectly acceptable. We were told that we would be provided with 'water and snacks', but in fact this turned out to include a bottle of poweraid each and a full lunch! Our guide (whose name TripAdvisor won't let me submit because it is unfortunately spelled the same way as a profanity) was great fun and really made the trip what it was.

I can definitely recommend this as a cool way to spend a morning in Arequipa!

I did this climb in 1 day. We left around midnight from Arequipa to drive to the starting point a few hours away. We walked about an hour before we reached base camp to have breakfast. Then we hiked to the top, stayed for a brief 10 minutes, and made our way back to the jeep by early afternoon.

My guide's name is Victor Hugo Gonzales Gonzales, and he was very attentive to me and the other two guys hiking that day. At breakfast, he was very friendly and made me feel comfortable. Before the hike he informed us about what to expect and that we should keep a slow, steady pace. I think he sat a good pace for our group. During the hike he continuously checked on us. He gave me a couple of glucose tablets around 5800 meters for quick energy. Victor has many years of experience hiking and mountaineering in Peru. I recommend going with him.

As for the hike itself, definitely make sure you are acclimatized. Everyone is different and each day can be different as well. I have been in high altitude a lot and have responded differently on each hike. Normally I get a headache in the middle of my forehead, but this day I was pretty lethargic. I think it would be better to camp at base camp and then hike the following day.

I am glad I did this hike; it was a great goal to accomplish. It was difficult only because of the altitude. It was not technical.

6075 meters high. This volcano is accessible in 2 days only (even 1), just make sure you're acclimatized, because not all companies ask you.
In march it was snowing on us at night, so in addition to the planned cold and altitude, 50cm of powder was there as well, which made it very difficult...
the views in the end totally worth it! And the feeling of reaching a 6000+ summit!

Decided on this trip as wanted to be able to say I'd mountain biked down a volcano! I booked this trip through one of the numerous tour operators near the Santa Catalina Monastery and must say that I did NOT get what I paid for. The '4x4' they promise you to take you up the mountain just about has 2 wheel drive, the water & snack included never appears and the equipment is average to poor with gaffer tape regularly needed to stick the safety gear on as the Velcro is so old. Generally felt short changed for my S140 (£31/$50).

The drive up does take a while but this is expected if you want to get to the 4800m start point. If you haven't previously acclimatised to altitude in somewhere like Cusco or Puno then this will be a struggle for you! As someone who hasn't biked for a long time I found the course tough. It was relentlessly bumpy on the road section and the 'short cuts' were described as difficult even by the experienced guide. I took a pretty impressive tumble and am still picking pieces of sharp bush/plant/rock out of my back! Generally I would say this is not for the faint hearted. It took about 2.5 hours to get down and by the end my hands had almost completely cramped up and I was shaken to the bone.

That all said the last section on the actual asphalt was exhilarating and I got some great video speeding down the hill. Overall, I'm glad I did it but wouldn't go again unlike my experience of the Cusipata Chilli River White Water Rafting...that one was well worth doing and well worth repeating!

I biked down chachani and it was awesome! Long drive up but then the views are amazing and the ride down was so fun. I have only done fairly easy mountain biking before and parts were a bit challenging, but I loved every minute of it! Great for people who want some adventure while seeing gorgeous views.
