After touring the Callejon de Huaylas, we stayed the night in Huaraz before taking a bus to Chimbote, there to board the train for Lima, Peru, a lengthy rail travel of 300 miles. The Callejon is well worth the experience. It resembles little Switzerland, with monstrous mountains rising like snowy ghosts into the sky. Yungay was on e a village covered by an extensive avalanche that killed more than 20,000 mountain inhabitants. Nowadays, the inhabitants farm terraced land steeplynstacked up the mountainsides.
