I found this place just by looking at a map, decided to ride up and see what is it all about. The ride to the lake was fantastic and then the cobble stone road leading to the lake was interesting to say the least! Upon arrival there is a $1 us entrance fee and a loop that goes around the whole lake with different vantage points. There is a school at the crater lake and the day I was visiting they school was practicing band music.. super fun to hang out with them. Take a picnic and spend a few hours up here... !

If you happen to be in El Salvador looking for a new place to visit, please go to La Laguna de Alegria. It’s amazing. The water is a spectacular turquoise blue. The mountains surrounding it provide a great backdrop and contrast. We did not swim in the water because when we went the water had evaporated quite a bit because it was peak summer! (Very hot) But I do believe you can swim. It costs $1 per person and you can bring your own food and drinks.

Just outside Alegria, very interesting location to visit as an old volcanic area with sulphur water. Great views of the mountains around it.

Beautiful views when going up the mountain and down into the large caldera. The Lake is shrinking, but a worthwhile trip.

If you're in El Salvadore go see the volcanic creator at Alegria....fascinating in a Jurassic Park kinda way. Don't eat at Cartegena in town though....the chicken is the worst ever and probably the dead fighting clocks they keep on the property. The Carne Asada was good....
