Tucked away in Auburn West at the end of Chiswick Street, this local council-run Botanic Gardens is not widely known outside the precinct and environs of western Sydney, but it’s well worth a gander. Nominal entry charge (free entry on the week day we visited!). Two gardens – a Japanese rock garden and a formal one. The central lake is the stand-out feature, also an Olympic-length Reflection Pool. Droves of migratory bird life are attracted to ABG, two resident peacocks, and a lot of large rocks scattered around the gardens. The distinctly underwhelming Duck River runs through the gardens.

Visited Auburn Botanic Gardens on weekdays. Entrance to garden on weekdays is free.
Nice little garden with lake and nice flowery plants. There is a small area with peacock and other native small animals.
It seems the garden is more festive on weekends rather than weekends

First time visit to Cherry Blossom Festival and to the gardens. Had ticket to first session on the first Saturday. Caught train to Auburn station and travelled on first free shuttle bus to the gardens. Very well organised. The Japanese garden section was very small but plenty of photo opportunities with the cherry blossoms.Plenty of Japanese food options & they were great. . Beautiful sunny day to sit on the grass, relax & enjoy the food and drinks. Had time to also visit the fauna area with kangaroos, wallabies, emus, wombat. Lots of peacocks wandering the gardens. At the end of the session, only a short wait for return free shuttle back to Auburn station.

Note this review is in regard to the advertised Cherry Blossom Festival, not the Auburn Botanic Garden that hosts the festival. The gardens are OK , but don't bother seeing the gardens and paying $$ during the Cherry Blossom Festival event. Underwhelming best describes the blossoms. There were more overpriced food trucks than actual cherry blossom trees. Some areas for public safety were roped off, so go outside the festival to have full access. If you are expecting a Sukura Colour type experience you will be grossly dissappointed. Save some extra money take a trip to Bowral Tulip time instead.

We have been wanting to visit these Gardens for some time as it had been shown on TV a while ago , so when we were visiting our Son in Doonside we decided to go . It was a Sunday Morning and we arrive a few minutes before they opened at 10 am . We were quite surprised that they charge for admission on Weekends , This doesn't make any sense as it is Free for the rest of the Week . Pensioners cost $6 .
We were given a Map to follow and proceeded to the Japanese Gardens , which was quite nice but not in the same league as the Chinese Garden of Friendship at Darling Harbor . We continue around the whole of the Gardens and the thing that really stood out was the Poor state of the Gardens , Lots of Weeds , very little in the way of Plant identification . I always thought that one purpose of Botanical Gardens was to Educate People , so these Gardens Fail in that regard . Also they are very Run Down , most of the Lawns needed Mowing and Weeding . The Rose Garden was Terrible , with Rose bushes so spaced out they looked Pathetic . The Council should have a good look at this and compare this to other Gardens that don't Charge Admission but look magnificent . The Gardens in Albury spring to mind . I don't think we will bother coming back .

Ruined by commercialism indeed!
A money making business. Rude marshalling guys who would not allow us to take photos. Loudly told us off and said keep moving. Why else do people pay to go to a cherry blossom festival For photos! For memories!
I feel the council should get feedback and allocate an hour. Out of the 45mins we got today, it was raining and therefore our efforts to dress up and enjoy the atmosphere was already dampened. All I can hear now is "keep moving" (loud rude marshalls) 😒

The gardens are always good to see, although Australian animals section is not currently available.
The colourful peacock was walking around.
Australian plants section is worth a walk around - Billabong atmospheric.
Food trucks this week are much Japanese influenced.
It was a.lovely day.
Queueing at the beginning of the Japanese Gardens entrance was tiresome: Maybe too many were ticketed for each timeslot.
Queues operated throughout that walk.

Sadly the quiet, placid gardens and cherry blossom have been over run by commercialism. Plus now you're corralled around the garden in a horde of people. Certain areas closed off. Only walk in one direction. Constantly reminded to move on. The food stalls make it look cheap and over managed.

I cam here on the weekend with three other friends for the annual Cherry Blossom Festival. Being Sunday and a nice sunny day it was very crowded but still worth while. The entry fee of $12.50 was waived for those living in Cumberland council with photo i.d and address. Inside though busy, there were plenty of choices to eat from Asian food trucks and the Cherry Blossoms were beautiful. Well worth coming here for a couple of hours for something different. You could see that a few of the trees were yet to blossom as they were still buds. Better to visit during the week if you can have time of work for a less busy wonder through the blossoms.

The garden in Auburn is always good for a stroll or picnic if you are in the area. But in August, it is well worth a visit to see the cherry blossoms. This year the festival is between 17th to 26th August. The paths are wide, well maintained and clean. The plant selection is good and the Japanese garden design is good. The cherry trees are young but still impressive, and should get larger and more impressive every year. There was staff directing the hundreds of visitors around the garden, so it’s well organised. The garden was over crowed with visitors, but I found it pleasant to see so many people enjoying the garden. Some visitors were people dressed in Japanese themed costumes and kimonos.
I feel the organiser should give a daily update on the condition of the cherry flowers on their web page. The climate in Western Sydney is not ideal for cherry flowers, so the sudden warm and windy weather, and rain, can ruin the flowers quickly so I feel that some visitors may make a long trip to the garden to find they arrived too early or too late to view the cherry flowers. I tried to phone the Auburn council many times to ask if they know if the cherry blossoms were open but they never answered the phone. The flowers seemed to be at their best last weekend, exceeding my expectation. No sure what they will look like this weekend as it has been very windy.
The festival is titled “Sydney Cherry Blossom Festival” but the garden is actually far from the city of Sydney and it is in Western Sydney. It is easier to go by car as the train station if far. There is a free shuttle bus from the train station during the cherry blossom festival but at other times you could get a bus or taxi from Auburn station. There was staff directing the cars to a large car park so it wasn’t a problem to park. It is a crazy time to visit the garden due to the large number of visitors, but I just found it easy as the staff helped to direct the traffic.
The prepaid $5 tickets during the festivals allows for quick entry into the garden. The line for ticket purchases was long, so pre purchasing tickets is advisable. The garden if free to enter when the festival is not on.
There is a small zoo in the garden with a few Australian animals such as wallabies, kangaroos, emus and a cape barren goose. The enclosures look very well maintained and clean. There are also many peacock and geese roaming the garden, and carp in the large lake.
For the festival, there were lots of food options and entertainment, but at other times, you will need to bring your own food and drinks to the garden. Or you can drive to the nearby Dooleys Lidcombe Catholic Club that has a great choice of food … or try one of the Korean restaurants near Lidcombe train station.
I think that the staff that manage and maintain this garden are doing a great job, and have created a garden that can be enjoyed by many visitors.

Hi there, grateful if you can help me with a guideline. I am planning to visit Sydney in Sept. May I know is the Cherry Blossom in the Auburn Botanic Garden still blooming at this time. Or do I have to make a visit during the Cherry Blossom Festival in the 2 weeks in August 2019?
Thank you in advance.

How do I reach the gardens by public transport,i.e. train from the city to Auburn station, then what's next?
Written 7 September 2018
During Cherry Blossom week there were special buses. I'm not sure but would suggest you look up State Tranist buses or ring Auburn Council. There may be local buses which pass the gates.
