So, that can be an issue. Otherwise, it's a place to be.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 October 2023
- Dan LBunbury, Australia8,538 contributionsExquisite Craftsmanship but know your precious metals. We remember Celuk as a small traditional village renowned as a place of gold & silver craftsmen. It's no longer a small village, having expanded exponentially and commercially over the years. The craftsmen of gold and silver are still here, but in larger and grander premises geared to the tourist trade. The workmanship is exquisite, beautiful designs in a range of sizes and also larger creations for home decor. Most jewelry items were unpriced where we visited and I wondered how many commissions were being paid as our driver mentioned that a commission was received on a successful sale. When dealing with precious metals, no matter how attractive, I'm not confident in the value of the more expensive offerings. A 50% reduction in asking price in response to the first offer raises alarm bells with us and we moved on.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 April 2024

We visited Made Mantra as the adjacent Japa Silver was closed. This was a mistake.
When it came time to pay we asked if card was accepted.. we were given a resounding "yes".
However once our card was debited (and the money taken from our account) we were told there was an issue with printing the receipt and that we would either have to pay again in cash or leave our (paid for) jewellery behind.
We showed the staff our banking app (wise) and the details of the completed transaction. They insisted that because they were unable to print the receipt that they had not been paid.
The staff in store made a video call to the owner and his wife (who was most unpleasant) who insisted that we leave our purchases behind until he could "check" the payment at some later date...maybe in a couple of days.
This went on for some time until I was able to cancel the transaction, get the money we had already paid back into our account and simply pay in cash.
I recommend shopping elsewhere unless you enjoy attempted double charging and then being told that you are untrustworthy by the person attempting to double charge you.
There are lots of great options for silver in Celuk... in our experience Made Mantra is definitely not one of them.

The village itself is a traditional balinese one but it doesn't worth a visit. The silver-art is part of their culture for sure but nowadays is unfortunately a tourist thing. They attract you with the 'see how we made silver and work with it' thing but the information are nothing more than zero and then they push you inside the shop where you can buy the not cheap silver jewels they make. Light scammy.

I went to visit this shop bcoz our guide sent us there after visiting wood carving and balik art and coffee plantation and I bought a silver bracelet and after visiting other little jewelry shop i saw that i paid more than 3 times the price. its a tourist trap, don't buy there, its overpriced. i tried to help the locals to buy souvenirs but they are not helping their selves with all the bad comments. Karma exist.

We spent some time on the internet researching all of the various silversmiths in Celuk, and picked out two and went to them, ignoring all of the others. There are tens and tens of shops, and if you go to a random one you WILL be annoyed and disappointed.
One we picked was Prapen, the other was Yan Yan. We picked Prapen based in excellent reviews of their work found all over the internet, and picked Yan Yan based on reviews here on Tripadvisor.
Prapen is the place to go for high quality, unusual work. Their prices are fixed, so no haggling. No pestering as you walk around looking at their work.
Yan Yan was more typical of the silverwork found in Celuk - mostly very ornate and not our taste. But at least in Yan Yan also there wasn't any pestering. Decent prices and 15% off for buying multiple pieces.
So if you want to get the best out of Celuk, you have to put the work in beforehand.

As per my experience, I feel yanyan is best place to buy silver. It is bit inside celuk in sukawati place. They offer best prices. As a standard they give you 10% off. But if you buy more items then you can bargain for more discounts.. Good affordable place.

My daughter and I were really looking forward to coming to Celuk to buy some silver jewellery. After four shops of finding nothing we gave up. Nothing appealed to either of us, even though our tastes vary slightly. While acknowledging the pieces are handmade, which would make them more expensive, prices did seem inflated, even with haggling they were overpriced, probably to cover the amount of staff employed. To give an idea of how much staff some of these places have, this is what happened in three out four places we visited.
On arriving at carpark someone rushes to open the car door for you, (there were a few people in the carpark waiting for cars).
Someone else will usher you inside.
Another person will guide you around to see jewellery being made, (this seems compulsory, despite the fact you have seen it at previous places). Then you are taken into the large showroom, with numerous staff.
Another person constantly hovers, dragging out pieces you are not interested in.
Can honestly say the whole experience was awful from having car doors opened for us, to the pressure in the showroom to purchase and would never recommend it, it was a total waste of time. We ended up buying some pieces in a market for a good price, yeah, they probably weren’t hand made but at least we weren’t hassled.

With all due respect to the silversmiths of this village and their art, shops here charge at least 4 times the market elsewhere in Bali. The guide or driver would insist you to go there - please avoid if you can. Everything sold here is available in Bali with much more reasonable prices.

We visited as part of an organised tour. The jewellery shops line this village and our guide obviously took us to the one that he gets commission from.
They showed us the silver being made into jewellery and I asked how much each person got per item - it was 10,000 Indonesian Rupee which is about £0.50 in the UK. Each item took up to a day to make depending upon its intricate design. This is exploitation at its worst as the items we’re being sold for £30- £300++ each depending on the design.
I didn’t see anything I liked as the designs were not to my taste and all the stones used were cubic zirconia.
Extortionately over priced and exploited workers who make 50p per item and can make only about 50 items a month to 200 which means they work long, laborious hours for max £100 a month.
Would not be part of this exploitation process and never will be until craftsmen/ women are paid a decent wage for their skills.

Where do I go to find yellow gold jewellery in Celuk? :)
Written 17 December 2019
Celuk isn't known for gold jewellery. However, there are many stores in Denpasar who specialize in selling yellow gold jewellery.

I would like to buy at least one good silver bracelet. My son brought me back one from his first trip to Bali. It turned a brassy color. How can I tell if I'm getting real silver?
Written 1 January 2015
I would buy from Celuk Village. Their silver is 90% silver with 10% added copper for strength. You should be able to do a reasonable bargain on price, though for very intricate work you should not expect it to be "cheap". Please note that because they do not use rhodium plate on the outside, your silver WILL discolour. You can soak it in lemon juice or use a jewellery cleaner to restore its colour.
