Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Nice peaceful and interesting place to visit. My French is ok, but I struggled to read and understand everything so it would have been good to have some English explanations . COVID Procedures all good but many people did not follow the guidance and went the wrong way round things or didn’t follow paths

This gothic looking church-memorial is atop the hill overlooking Dormans. It is relatively unadorned, but there is a covered wing with inscriptions that describe the various batles and the combatants. We did not go inside.

Beautiful building with its two chapels and separate ossuary building. Some interesting museum-style exhibits and lovely grounds. There is also a small gift shop. Conveniently close to the Leclerc supermarket.

A large war memorial in an area full of war memorials. This one has beautiful stained glass windows and a lovely chapel. We believe it is important to visit and remember what happened.

Staying close by we came mid morning and looked at the memorial first which was a mistake because when we finished the chateau closed for two and a half hours. If coming here early go to the chateau first. The gardens are lovely with nice walks. Water flowing in a peaceful environment makes for time to reflect on life and to recover from the many steps to the top of the towers if the memorial.

Well worth the effort. Good place to have a picnic lunch. The Tourist Bureau is at the entrance in an old Chateau.

This is a memorial built by the people of Dormans directly after World War 1. It is not a cemetery (there is a French WWI cemetery in another part of Dormans and a US one about half an hour to the north).

You can drive up to the memorial top car park but I would suggest parking in the bottom car park and walking up the avenue to get the full impact of this site. The memorial is huge, almost overwhelming. A walk up the stone stairs and into the main memorial building. Fantastic stained glass windows and stone carvings. Very peaceful. On the walls are the names of those who fell engraved into the stone and stained red to signify the blood they gave. It's not time to leave though... Exit and turn right and proceed up the stairs to the chapel. Again, outstanding. There are also some small rooms off to either side with exhibits and photos. And as an addition to your visit the view from the top on a sunny day is fantastic.

Highly recommended.

This memorial is set in a lovely park with good views of the surrounding area. Sadly it was closed when we visited on a Monday. Its always disappointing when important sites are closed during the main ho9liday season. Several other visitors arrived and were equally disappointed.

When we left we had no better understanding why the huge monument/church is here. There is an ossuarium of 1500 soldiers.
Of course this place is related to the battles near the Marne, but not necessarily in Dormans while the last battle in Dormans took place in 1575.
Of course we know that Pétain, Foch and Joffre are French commanders, but why they are honored here profusely, we could not grasp. Do the French think they did a wonderful job at the Marne?
Would it be so difficult to explain the story of the Dormans monument to the visitors?
Perhaps this is done inside the church, but it was closed while were there (during the day).
