This Roman city might not be as big or imposing as Dougga, but has a lot to offer. Temples, baths, markets and houses have not survived as complete, but it compensate the visit with many mosaics. It’s hard to understand how tourists can just walk on top of the mosaics, but the site has not been properly taken care of. Grass is growing between the rocks and trash dotted the entire site. The information panels on each building were blank, but a staff of technicians were instaling spot lights. Worst of all, my husband and I were the only tourists there. I´ve seen pictures of Petronio´s Palestra before the intervention, and it looked much more beautiful. I understand the need of structural reinforcement, but I wish they had built something less invasive. Now, it´s like a smile with brackets!

This is one a several absolutely wonderful Roman sites in Tunisia. When we visited in October, as with all the other places we visited, we practically had the place to ourselves! It was a great place to wander about - plenty of beautiful remains - and lots more to be uncovered in time. There is very little in the way of desciption boards so you need a guide or guidebook to get the best out of a visit. Maybe not one of the top five attractions but I am glad I visited it - dont miss it.
