Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This Roman city might not be as big or imposing as Dougga, but has a lot to offer. Temples, baths, markets and houses have not survived as complete, but it compensate the visit with many mosaics.

It’s hard to understand how tourists can just walk on top of the mosaics, but the site has not been properly taken care of. Grass is growing between the rocks and trash dotted the entire site.

The information panels on each building were blank, but a staff of technicians were instaling spot lights. Worst of all, my husband and I were the only tourists there.

I´ve seen pictures of Petronio´s Palestra before the intervention, and it looked much more beautiful. I understand the need of structural reinforcement, but I wish they had built something less invasive. Now, it´s like a smile with brackets!

Thuburbo Majus is a major Roman site just outside of El Fahs. Quite often a day trip to Dougga will include Thububo Majus as well.TAKE a camera !! The charge to go in is very cheap.

We visited here on our way to Dougga and really enjoyed this Punic/Roman site. It was deserted and looks like hardly anyone ever visits. Well preserved and in a remote site .

It's hard to believe that not many reviews are here promoting tourism to this place. We went to this place on a day tour visiting roman ruins and this was our last stop during a long day. Unlike other roman sites, this was located in plain land, not high up in the mountains. As the surrounding area is barren land, the temperature was very high unlike the seaside resorts and if unaccustomed to the high heat, it is recommended to use umbrella or not go there at all. We visited Dougga before, and just like it, this site consists of roman architecture, primarily houses of states persons, baths, amphitheatre, temples. The highlight is the capitol which stood the test of time very well. There are preserved mosaics along the path as well. The gymnasium called Palaestra of Petronii is a very interesting building as well, with very well kept level floors used for games practices. Overall, Thuburbo Majus represents one of the finely preserved Roman sites and although it's not close to many seaside resorts, history enthusiasts will definitely find it worthwhile.

Although Tunisia has some of the finest Roman ruins in North Africa and probably the most numerous, the most popular archaeological sites are often overrun by tourists (eg. Dougga, Carthage). Thuburbo Majus is not easy to find (it is signposted on the road FROM Tunis but not the opposite direction!) but well worth the trip. There are no guides or any placards around the site but our guide book provided us with enough information to make the visit enjoyable. It was lovely to be able to wander around the ruins without hindrance and take our time. The views from the site across the fields are also wonderful.

You don't need a lot of imagination when strolling around the ruins to place yourself in Roman times. The place is rather far from all tourist attractions, so probably you will be there alone. No sound of other people, maybe a goat screaming nearby. The place is partly excavated and just the part still in the ground gives you an idea of the immense city and culture this used to be. You see stones and columns sticking out of the surface as far as you can see. There are no complete structures (not even close to that) but there are remains of a forum, the amphitheater, temples, baths, houses and streets. The freedom you have to walk around the site in silence makes you rebuilding the structures in your head. No augmented reality needed

This is one a several absolutely wonderful Roman sites in Tunisia. When we visited in October, as with all the other places we visited, we practically had the place to ourselves!
It was a great place to wander about - plenty of beautiful remains - and lots more to be uncovered in time. There is very little in the way of desciption boards so you need a guide or guidebook to get the best out of a visit.
Maybe not one of the top five attractions but I am glad I visited it - dont miss it.

This is an important Roman site that is not in the top 10. Worth a visit because it has lots of ruins over a large area and you may have the site all to yourself for taking photos. You do not need a guide, but signage is a bit faded and a little pretrip reading up on the site would be good. The small gift shop was closed on our Saturday visit. The site has restrooms.

Devoid of any other visitors (or touts or guides to hire) when we visited late afternoon this past Saturday during low season. 7 dinar per person to enter. Signage in relatively good condition, in French, Arabic and English.

Not as large as Dugga but still with a wealth of ruins in good condition, and much less spread out than Carthage.

We stopped on our way back from Dugga to Tunis, using the location shown on google maps.

Highly recommended. Wear shoes suitable for walking on uneven ground.
