About
The Museo de Arte Abstracto Español in Cuenca exhibits a permanent collection of 129 paintings and sculptures by Spanish artists of the Abstract Generation of the 1950s and 60s (Millares, Tàpies, Sempere, Torner, Rueda, Zóbel, Saura, among some thirty other artists), as well as other artists from the 1980s and 90s.In 1980, the founder of the Museum, Fernando Zóbel, donated its collection to the Fundación Juan March, which then incorporated it into its own collection. Situated in the Casas Colgadas (Hanging Houses) of the city of Cuenca, in a late-fifteenth-century medieval building, property of the city, the Museum has undergone various renovations and, in 1994, inaugurated its galleries for temporary exhibitions.

Our admission was included with a tour, not something we would have done on our own. If you like abstract art, be sure to go. The most interesting part for us was the building itself. The museum is built in two of the last three houses that hang from the cliffs. Rooms in the museum on the cliff side have spectacular views of the bridge and gorge below.

Museu de Arte Abstracte Español is a museum of modern art located in the old town of Cuenca, a city in Castilla-la-Mancha Region, in the center of Spain. I came here to see some artworks (at the beginning of November-2022), but pitifully it was on works, so I only can see a few of them and a summary of the history of the museum. I hope to come here in the future and see all museum.

If you love modern art, in a beautiful building, with magnificent views to match the magnificent Tapies, Chillida, and other art, do not miss a trip to this wonderful town on the side of a mountain. After a wonderful art tour of Spain and its great museums, and having never heard of this museum, or for that matter, Cuenca, I would only go back to Spain if the trip included the Mueso de Arte Abstracto. Do not miss it.

The museum has on display many items from contemporary abstract Spanish artists. A splendid collection if you like that type of art, which I do. It had all the names I recognised and liked from big booming museums around the world. These are reason to not miss on their own.
The museum is a display itself and is a fabulous bonus. It is one of the casa colgadas of Cuenca, meaning it has been stuck on the top of a cliff and it overhangs that cliff. An impressive site from the outside and the reason we visited Cuenca.
The house is late 15th century.
The house has been modernised to house it’s collection. It retains a confusing set of rooms and you walk a route up and down stairs and through disorientating room after room. An adventure by itself to view the collection.
Each room, well maybe half of the rooms, have ancient wooden windows that provide first class views over the Cuenca countryside.
The top floor has the ancient exposed supporting beams.
The crescendo is the top floor where there are three large adjacent windows. These create a triptych of views that are as much a work of art as the works of art.
A double bonus from visiting.
And here come the steak knives. It’s free. You would be a fool to miss it.
An easy day trip from Madrid leaving on the AVE at 8:40 am and returning on the AVE at 16:10. Enough time to see the museum before it takes its elongated lunch break and then go and see the rest of Cuenca. I cannot recommend more highly.

Be warned that the museum closes for a couple of hours for lunch. Really well organised gallery, completely painted white so not to distract from the artwork and has some stunning views when you look out of the window. Well worth a visit.

Not only is the art fantastic, but the Hanging house is worth visiting, and the view is great. Take the time to see this museum.

Fernando Zobel was a Filipino who was born in Manila in 1924. He was a member of a very prominent family. In 1946 he studied history and literature in Harvard and graduated magna laude in 1949. He started painting and was influenced by the works of Mark Rothko and took up modernism and abstract expressionism. Later he moved to Cuenca and painted landscapes by the Jucar River. He created the Museum of Spanish Abstract Art in one of the Hanging Houses in 1966. He was helped in this endeavor by the painter Gustavo Torner and Gerardo Rueda. The museum houses works of art by artists such as Antoni Tapies, Antonio Saura, Rafael Canogar, Jose Guerrero, Jose Maria Yturralde, Lucio Muñoz, Pablo Palazuelo, Manuel Rivera, and Fernando Zobel.
In 1980 Fernando Zobel donated his collection to the Juan March Foundation, who now runs the museum. The building is owned by the City Hall. Zobel died in Rome in 1984. In 1983 King Juan Carlos of Spain awarded Zobel the Gold Medal of Merit of the Fine Arts. In 2006 Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo gave Zobel a posthumous award, the Presidential Medal of Merit for his contributions in the arts.
The museum has attracted other modern art museums to the city of Cuenca and has made Cuenca one of the principal abstract art centers of Spain. The AVE station has also been named the Fernando Zobel Station, in his honor.

Only a few art experts have even heard of Cuenca, but between the attraction of the Museum of Abstract Art and the Hotel Leonor de Aquitania, my boyfriend insisted it was worth the side trip out of Madrid (on the Madrid-Valencia train line) on our October 2006 trip to Spain. In the middle of desolate and empty countryside, there is a modern town of Cuenca where you get off the train. You will have to call for a taxi to take you up the hill to the old town, because the road is very steep and twisty. Exploring the old town we very much enjoyed the abstract art museum, the cathedral and the views across the valleys. Then we stumbled on the (FREE) Fundacion Manuel Perez, another, more extensive modern art museum, showing Dali's Don Quixote drawings in the middle of a huge collection. There is also a science museum we did not have time to visit. Strolling down a side street back to our hotel, we then discovered Figon del Huescar, where we had the best meal of our trip - among very few diners in a modern and very reasonably priced restaurant with excellent service (better than the best meals we had in Barcelona later that week).
