I have only been on a surfboard once before in 1986 in Manly with 25 meters waves and -30degrees (well…that’s what it felt like at the time!). I drank 19 litres of water, didn’t catch anything except a bloody back and toes thanks to the triple fins and a massive headache, so…I gave up! I was told afterwards by my mates that they only surfed in these conditions and had been surfing since their mums were pregnant! They had promised to teach me so I stupidly followed to impress my girlfriend.
For my 61st birthday, my darling daughters decided they would force me to have surf lessons before I tackle Kite surfing! What a Great idea that was!
After feeling sick all night and bitting my finger nails off, I decided not to be a wimp and went for my first lesson (2 more to go).
What can I say?….Rees, our instructor was really great! Patience must be his middle name! He made us feel confident, showed us the ropes and made us believe that we could do it! Ok…I was not as good as I was hoping to be by the end but please…give me a break! The young girls (ladies actually) who were with me, all did much better! They managed to catch a few waves and stand up! So I take it as a sign! I will do much better next time! Maybe I’m a slow learner! Apart from that….I strongly recommend that surfing school! The experience was great and….not one mouthful of water and I still have all my toes! That’s got to be good.
Most of all…I can’t wait to go again for my next lessons!
See you soon guys and I’ll make you proud!
