Discovery Bay near Albany is a truly unique attraction.

It is home to Australia's last operating Whaling Station, a stunning Botanic Garden of Australian plants and a display offering visitors a close up experience with friendly Australian Wildlife.

You can choose to explore either our whaling history, or the gardens and wildlife, or the entire site to make a real day of it! Pack a picnic or BBQ lunch and spend a day discovering lots you didn't know about the Great Southern region.

Situated at the tip of the Flinders Peninsula, the heritage-listed "Whale World" site has undergone dramatic change since 2004. Now maximising its location, Discovery Bay is a showcase of amazing regional bio-diversity, yet still remains true to the original whaling display.

Historic Whaling Station guided tours are included with admission, while informative displays are provided to enjoy the gardens and wildlife at your own pace.

It was a little while ago, but we thought it was dear until we finished the tours and saw the fantastic presentations. We felt like we saw history from the inside and not as a casual observer. Interesting, no, enlightening and educational while entertaining, YES!

Hello Kim Thank you for checking back in after your experience and reviewing it as a 5-star visit. We love to see that we have changed people's minds from thinking the price is high to saying it was completely worth it, as our team works incredibly hard on the displays we have. Lovely feedback that you saw history from the... More

Give yourself at least two hours to discover this attraction. There is lots to see and learn. My kids had fun climbing all over the ship, which may be a little dangerous for younger children, exploring 'old' machinery and seeing how people used to live. Be warned though, there is a lot of walking. There is a tour group but... More

Hi Jupitar Thank you for your review and your honest account of how your kids found the experience, it is hard because the tour is not always suitable for all ages or interest levels. We are never offended if families decide to spend time exploring on their own and are happy to see that you still enjoyed your outing exploring... More

A difficult period in our history if you don't agree with whaling but we need to remember the context before condemning those who made a living from it

Hello Thank you for your 5 star recommendation on our historic displays. You are absolutely right, it is a difficult task to present the history without upsetting each side of the story and we hope you found the information unbiased. More

Enjoyed learning about the history of the whaling industry, although the grisly bits (photos and audio) weren't too pleasant, it helped to bring it to life. Having the dry docked whaling boat to go on board was a highlight. Do think more could be done to make it more interactive for kids but a good few hours regardless.

We are pleased to see you found it interesting, and enjoyed the chance to explore the last whale chaser Cheynes IV. Never knew this was here. Very well executed tourist attractions with great displays and so informative. Also like the little native animal enclosure

A terrific insight into whaling. We didn't know that whaling only ceased in Australia in 1978. Take the guided tour. It is well worthwhile.

Hi Mick Thank you for your review and 5 star recommendation that people visit, and then join one of our guided tours while here. We often surprise visitors with the history of Australian whaling, it certainly is more recent than many people expect to learn! Great to see you left with a much better insight into whaling and felt your... More

Leant much about the whaling industry and the types of whales around Albany. Good short films and exhibitions. The guided tour was good value. Should be marketed to all Japanese tourists - no-one would support whaling after this tour.

Hello Thank you for your review, and while it is not our intention to upset people joining our tour with the content we share, we know what you are trying to say. It certainly is not a pleasant history, and it surprises many visitors when they discover how recently it was happening here in Albany. We aim to provide a... More

As a child i was aware of whaling and later its demise. Must of my idea of whaling comes from the Japanese continuing today with the practice. I had no idea what sort of horrid history (in the absence of better education) we also had and found it amazing to learn about our part in whaling. Great centre and you... More

we found this site very interesting as we knew very little of the whaling industry. The original ship was still there which was available to explore. There was an exhibition show various skeletons of whales unbelievable the size. There were several movies in 3d & a tourist shop

A must visit if exploring the Albany area. Great value for money - Whaling Centre, Wildlife Centre and Botanic Garden all purchased as one ticket. Great time exploring the history of whaling, Aussie wildlife and gardens. There is a café too which serves drinks and food.
