Discovery Bay near Albany is a truly unique attraction.

It is home to Australia's last operating Whaling Station, a stunning Botanic Garden of Australian plants and a display offering visitors a close up experience with friendly Australian Wildlife.

You can choose to explore either our whaling history, or the gardens and wildlife, or the entire site to make a real day of it! Pack a picnic or BBQ lunch and spend a day discovering lots you didn't know about the Great Southern region.

Situated at the tip of the Flinders Peninsula, the heritage-listed "Whale World" site has undergone dramatic change since 2004. Now maximising its location, Discovery Bay is a showcase of amazing regional bio-diversity, yet still remains true to the original whaling display.

Historic Whaling Station guided tours are included with admission, while informative displays are provided to enjoy the gardens and wildlife at your own pace.

Guided tour operates every hour and the guide we had was absolutely fantastic. She was Engaging and Knowledgeable on the history of Whaling in Western Australia. The tour outlines the history of the premises and the stages of processing a whale carcass. Once the tour is completed you can explore the whaling station in more detail including the Cheynes IV,... I enjoyed all of this attraction, but wheelbound hubby couldnt go everywhere as it was a bit up hill. But we enjoyed what we saw. I recommend this mostly to just stand next to the Skeltons and be awed at the sizes. The visual shows were good, especially with the 3D glasses 😀 some a bit gory but that was... More

It was an excellent visit- very informative and educational, but a part of the tour required a display with a minimum age. There are graphic images that are very inappropriate for kids under 15.... This only applies to one section of the tour though, the remainder of the tour and the rest of the station were fine. The kids especially... More

At the end of the road! First sight is of. Beached whale chaser and the story goes on from there. Take the guided tour and learn about the whaling station's history in the 20th Century until its last "Flensing" in 1978 when whaling at least in Western Australia ceased. A good 3D audiovisual experience and a fascinating museum compliment a... More

Overall experience was good, but a bit over priced for what it is costing $75 for a family. Guide was very knowledgeable. Bit of a hit or miss attraction for me.

A good day trip to explore the particular history of this part of the country, but quite disappointed with the quality and price level of the interpretive centre, guides and screenings. Quality of sound and videos are hampered by either doors not shot ( letting light in ) and lousy acoustics with sound bouncing off the innards of steel whale... More

Very interesting when it comes to the history. Amazing to see how the whaling industry used to work. Highly recommend a guided tour as they know stories you couldn't find on the net. The cafe is worth a stop to, delish meals on offer with a good price.

You can join an informative tour (hourly) or go on your own around this ex whaling station, the last to operate in Australia. Not for the squeamish, this doesn't shy away from any of the practical, horrific details of whaling - but they were different times, different practices and if you are of a certain age you have to accept... A factory museum from a time of candles and sea faring monster hunters. Informative and every little trick to captivate the attention of the viewers. The kids enjoyed clambering around the Cheynes IV whale ship. The deck to chop up the whale blubber and head of the whale is well preserved. There was several videos including a 3D. A bonus... More
