Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We were overwhelmed by the depth and quality of this exhibition. It was so inexpensive ($5 for adults and free for children). There were many models of ships, plus interesting artifacts and stories. The volunteer staff were happy to answer any questions and very knowlegible. The story of the Confererate raider Shenandoah, the model of the Antarctic vessel RSV Aurora Australis, the Newport Steam Ferry, and the Fog Horn were of great interest.

Enjoyed visit to Seaworks (formerly Melbourne Harbour Trust Dockyard). Sea Shephard's ship Steve Irwin is moored here. This vessel is the organisation's flagship & has been disrupting Japanese whalers for a decade. Free tours on Sunday 12pm-4pm. Seaworks is also home to Maritime Discovery Centre which celebrates Williamstown maritime history with art, artefacts & literature. Open every Wednesday & Sunday 11am-3pm. Entry is gold coin donation

Very interesting history and displays. Entry is gold coin donation and the volunteer staff are very informative and passionate with a wealth of information about the local area.

This is an interesting spot to include in a visit to Williamstown. Some interesting maritime equipment and old sailors' logs to read. Wonderful, enthusiastic museum staff are showcasing the history of this site, which was so important to the development of Melbourne. Later, we visited the Castlemaine - a historic WWII ship nearby - also well worth the visit. Finally, a fascinating visit to the Steve Irwin Sea Shepherd ship. Altogether this made for a very cost effective and highly interesting family outing, which I would highly recommend.

We went to Williamstown in the first place to visit Seaworks, only to find that the only thing happening there was an art exhibition. Very disappointed. We had hoped to be able to walk round a museum, but nothing doing.

I'm sorry if the museum was closed when you came. We are only open on Sundays and Wednesdays 11am-3pm. We are limited as we are run by volunteers and can't open on more days at this time. However, sometimes events are held on the precinct on days when the museum isn't open (such as art shows). Thank you for your feedback.

We took the family to the Maritime Museum and then onto the Steve Irwin with the Sea Shepherd crew. Listening to the stories of recent campaigns was fascinating and held our whole party spellbound- a must if you are in this part of the world. I was very impressed by what seemed to be a very balanced account of their operations, and the understated bravery that must be part of every trip.

I found this place mainly by accident, wandering along the docks after spending sometime on the nearby older vessel (very much also worth a visit). I noticed a small sign pointing to SeaWorld, so I went in and paid $2. For that price, I got a guided tour of various old ship related artifacts and parts, like getting to see old sailing navigation equipment, read old sailors logs, and see some nice paintings as well. Some interesting stories were on display, and my lovely guide (who had a nice sense of humor) was so enthusiastic I couldn't help but get carried along with it. She even told me about a ghost tour that tells stories of old dead sailors as well, which I'm hoping to go on.
All in all, a nice, quiet experience, especially if you're into history, boats, and like hear about Melbourne's past. I think the kids will love it too next time I visit after the ghost tour!
The only thing I'd say is that it's slightly hard to find, if you don't know it's there, so make sure to get directions from Google or from their website first.

Wow, impressive! I visited the Maritime Museum with my niece and her two boys aged 11 and 9. On arrival two gentlemen working on a new display case were most welcoming. The volunteer guides are extremely passionate and knowledgeable, best of all, are happy to take you on a tour or be guided by items/displays in any order that may excite accompanying children in particular! They are very flexible and on hand to assist at any time. I was particularly taken by the breadth of the displayed items, there is something for everyone. The Museum also engages in the history of Melbourne that visitors may not be aware of, ie the partial collapse of the Westgate Bridge during construction. Such historical photos, charts and texts lead into further useful discussions long after a visit. We learnt so much and will definitely return. An absolute highlight was meeting Alf and his wife. Alf spent his working life as a deep sea diver, be it ocean work , lakes or the Yarra River - possibly called in for police work. He explained all facets of coping with the heavy suit and bell, breathing underwater, the associated pressure and how returning from such depths needed to be handled carefully (decompression). Thank you both for your generosity! Just one small point, the 'Maritime Museum' sign is quite small and we nearly missed it in the window. A gem of a Museum indeed.

This small maritime museum is open only a few days a week however when open it's definitely worth spending time browsing through the historic displays. The volunteer staff are very knowledgeable and proud of the museum. Displays include charts listing the first fleet vessels and passengers, mock up of old floating ship prisons, cannons, model ships, diving equipment and outfits, etc. Entry is by gold coin donation.
