- krocchiSingapore, Singapore2,239 contributionsBeautiful beach with great views.Really beautiful place for pictures, worth the visit. Do take note that you will need to climb up and down a narrow flight of stairs to get to the beach. It’s quite tiring if you’re unfit. Not recommended for people who can’t walk much or elderly. There is parking available. You should spend less than an hour here.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 September 2023

One option for a slightly different view of at least one stack and for a reasonably accessible option of seeing what it's like to be at the base of some of the coastal cliffs is to stop at Gibsons Steps. You can just park and catch the view from the top or you can take the few flights of stairs down to beach level and get some interesting photographs and memories from the beach level including the chance to get a closer look at one of the offshore stacks that are such a feature of the coastline in this area. - TheLeongOhanaUnited States7,505 contributionsBeach Level ViewThe Gibson Steps were located roughly 30-60 minutes walking distance from the main 12 Apostles parking lot (per posted signs) but we drove over (less than five minutes) and parked in its own car lot. The lot here was smaller so could fill up quicker during a higher travel season than May. The stairs were sandy and wet but we had no problems descending or climbing back up. The initial views when hitting the beach gave the impression of just one rock but as we walked along the beach towards it we could see a distinct 2nd one standing on its own. They were known as Gog and Magog. For us the best views were about 15 minutes walk from the staircase. This was a great vantage point especially as the sun was breaking free of the cloud covering. If you do not have enough time to visit then it looks like a new viewing platform will be open soon at the 12 Apostles. It was gated off during our visit.Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 29 May 2024

Judged alongside the other nearby attractions (12 Apostles & Loch Ard Gorge), Gibsons Steps adds little to this part of the Great Ocean Road trip. To be fair, we were unable to take in the whole experience because there was a safety gate preventing going down the steps to the beach, but I doubt we would have bothered in any event.
Worth a stop of the car to stretch the legs and take a photo at the viewing platform, but then time to move on.

The view along the coast is spectacular, as are all the viewing sites along this remarkable coastline. Disappointing that the steps are closed off but when you observe the significant fissure in the cliff face at the base of the steps its obvious why its closed. Suspect that the steps will need to be moved. However, the region is a dream without all the buses. !!!

My wife and I visited this place during our recent holiday along The Great Ocean Road for three nights, staying in Lorne.
When we were here in 2019, the Steps were closed due to storm damage. This time around, we were very glad the Steps were open for us to walk down to the beach.
The views are spectacular. During our visit, there was no one else around (mid week off peak season), which made it even more enjoyable. Excellent for social distancing, especially since the Steps are very narrow and are not suitable for crowds.

Worth a visit if in the area, but don’t waste time walking from the 12 Apostles visitor centre, if you’ve got a car, drive to the Gibson steps car park. We made the mistake of walking from the visitor centre as we didn’t realise there was any other way to access. The walk took about an hour return, plus time spent on the beach.

There is a small viewing platform at the top of the cliffs. But the ultimate view is from the beach. It really isn't worth a stop if you are unable to climb the steps. The steps are solid with a sturdy barrier/handrail and zigzag down the cliff face. It is from the beach that the cliffs are super impressive. Parking is limited - about 15 spots.

Worth a visit, but the steps down to the beach are closed. Nice views, nice beach, but no better than some of the lesser known beaches, and much less dramatic than the Arch, or the Grotto, or the Apostles.
If you are short on time, miss this one out - although 10 minutes is all it takes to tick it off the list.

Gibson steps be ready to walk 3.5kms from the car parking area to the beach area. Nice walk during spring, autumn and winter but not during peak summer time. Lovely place to visit. Beware of kids not running. You can't go with pram and kids at earlier stage.

Unfortunately the stairs down to the beach from the cliffs were closed, but it was still delightful to look over the ocean to the sound of the baaing sheep across the road rather than to the sound of tourist buses and helicopters. Yay for local tourism in the age of covid! Get out into our country if you can. There’s never been a better time.

Hi Guys, Just wondering the best time to access the Gibson steps with tides? is there only a small window of time that the beach is accessible?
Written 17 December 2017
On the day in question that you are actually going to the Gibson Steps check the tides for that day. On your arrival to the Twelve Apostles, the visit Information centre which is quite a large complex will be able to notify you further regarding swell in the area on that day. Something available which you can do but we didn't take advantage of is a Helicopter ride with a number of different business operating out of there. I think that would be an awesome experience. Google the 12 Apostle visit information centre for info regarding the Helicopter rides etc.

how far is the walk from the end of the GOW Gibson steps to Port Campbell?
Written 31 October 2017
From Gibson Steps it is 12.1 KM and will take about 2.5 hours to walk to the center of Port Campbell.
Written 31 October 2017
How many stairs are involved? Is it accessible for people who can't walk long distances (due to a walking disability)?
Written 19 February 2016
There are about 86 steps down to the beach from the top so I would so no to you walking it if you have a disability.
