About
Experience the awesome natural beauty of the world-famous Twelve Apostles. Rising abruptly from the tempestuous Southern Ocean, these seven limestone stacks are the highlight of the Great Ocean Road. They are best viewed at sunset when the yellow rock turns red, orange and every shade in between.

    A must visit during Sunset
This is the reason to come to great ocean road so this place should not be missed for your trip! Absolutely stunning during sunset. Highly recommended to come around 5pm to wait for the sun to set. Lots of parking available nearby too. It’s quite windy so bring along a jacket.

    Bucket list
For international tourists this may not be a bucket list item though the number of tour buses in the visitors centre carpark may prove me wrong even as I'm typing. But for Australians this is truly a bucket list item. Doing the Great Ocean Road is something that many aspire to - the place is like a conveyor belt in the warmer months for the grey nomads 'doing the lap'. My suggestion if you are coming from Melbourne would be to stop at Gibsons Steps first, have a gander there and then head to the 12 Apostles Visitor Centre. Now the trick is that this is actually on the inland side of the highway. It feels weird to be turning inland AWAY from where you know the famous stacks of rock are located but that's how it is. You go in, find a parking spot and then head to the visitors centre. You can actually just walk around it rather than through it and follow the path which cuts underneath the highway out to the viewing areas. At the time of writing another vantage point is under construction and it looks like it will be fabulous. Now bare in mind that there aren't actually 12 of the famous rock stacks. And they aren't all that impressive individually. What's impressive is the way the rocks have withstood the corrosive forces of nature unevenly to produce this unusual coastline. The viewing area can get crowded - the tour buses basically guarantee that - but be patient and most people will wander along and allow everyone to get their happy snaps.

    Twelve Apostles-worth a visit but over-rated
Of course this is a ‘must’ when travelling the Great Ocean Road. However, it is very touristy with its enormous car park, tour buses and helicopter rides. Gibbons Steps a short drive away is much better in my opinion. Less touristy and you can actually get down onto the beach.

You may not see the 12 Apostles forever
The Twelve Apostles are one of the great sights of the Southern Coast. The Great Coast is the place to see this Great Ocean Road. The waves crash and smash and the Twelve Apostles stand firm against the waves of the Southern Ocean. Be sure to see the Twelve Apostles, they may not be there forever.

    Must see
We have always wanted to see the twelve Apostles on the great ocean road & when the chance came up we took it. The stunning view from the viewing area is amazing, but there are not 12 as with the waves crashing against the soft sandstone rock some have disappeared. This is a famous attraction and must see very windy at times so take a jumper or jacket plenty of parking.

Incredible experience and caught one of my best sunsets!
Joined a tour with a chartered van back and forth to see The Twelve Apostles. It was an incredible experience! I would totally recommend joining a tour especially if travelling solo or visiting here for the first time! I joined Go West Tours and was lucky to have Lucy, an experienced guide, leading the tour💯

    Beyond Words!
We planned a vacation in Australia with the first stop in Sydney. We stayed a week in Sydney and flew to Melbourne for a few days. We booked an excursion to visit "Twelve Apostles" with the Sightseeing Tour company. The tour was AMAZING! Our tour guide (Bert) was very knowledgeable and informative about the history and the lay of the land and every stop we made along the way. He spotted some Koalas and Kangaroos in their natural environment and stopped for the group to take pictures and take in the awesome view. The duration of the tour is about 12 hours, but it's priceless for the sites and memories that are capture and would be cherished for a lifetime.

We were there on a pleasant late spring day, well before the heat of late summer.

The car park is massive. There are parking spaces for road coaches.

The shop was (as expected) ovcrpriced.

The original '12 Apostles' have reduced to eight through natural events. Individually, these formations might not seem much but standing sentry-like, they are collectively impressive.

It's intriguing how the waves' forces leads to different geometric impressions at varying heights.

The attraction was reasonably (though not uncomfortably) crowded. If one has a choice of when to visit, sunrise or approaching sunset may be best. That would avoid the tour groups from Melbourne who create crowding.

There is a new vantage point under constuction.

At some stage (perhaps soon) it looks like the cash-strapped Victorian government will impose an entry fee. This would be a very retrograde step.

The cheapest way to visit this attraction is to travel on V/Line train to Geelong departing Melbourne's Southern Cross railway sttaion at about 0900 hours, then change to the Apollo Bay morning road coach, and after half an hour or so at the latter connect to the Monday, Wednesday and Friday only road coach to Warrnambool that makes special stops at most attractions along the Great Ocean Road, and finally use the train ex Warrnambool (buffet car should be manned) to arrive back at Southern Cross mid evening. Much cheaper than some private enterprise tour company. mykis not accepted: you must have a V/Line paper ticket.

There are lots of excellent experiences along the coast both east and west of Port Campbell. We would suggest that some of the others, e.g. the Grotto, are better than the Apostles. Certainly the Apostles are worth visiting, but they suffer from too many tourists, often severe winds, and a trek from the carpark. They also have to be viewed from a distance, whereas some of the others are much closer and more 'intimate.' A new viewing experience is being built which might help, but potentially it may add another problem, i.e. having to pay. Currently all Port Campbell coastal experiences (sans the helicopter ride) are free. So, unless you have the flexibility to see the Apostles in their best light (early morning) and with minimal wind, then the Arches (currently closed), London Bridge, and the Grotto - all of which are west of Port Campbell, would be my choice.

Frankly this was a bit of a let down. We had come a long way to see these much vaunted piles of limestone rising out of the southern ocean. For a start there were never twelve, only ever eight and one collapsed 15 years ago, so there are now seven. Are they impressive? Well yes they are certainly eye catching but not in the same class as the Grand Canyon, the Painted Desert, the Jungfrau or Mt Everest. Nonetheless they are popular, certainly the most visited attraction on the Great Ocean Road and drawing lots of tourists. There were hundreds about when we were there in early January. Having seen them once, I think that is enough.

Photographs don't do the Twelve Apostles justice, it's just beautiful. It gets crowded as the day progresses so try and get in as early as you can. On hot days, there are alot of flies so get your repellent ready! But it's amazing to see and I'd highly recommend a visit

As we had been exploring the Great Ocean Road we had met random people along the way, and they were discussing whether the Apostles were open. I found it interesting that anyone could think it was closed for Covid... after all, it's not exactly a small part of the coastline. It turns out that you can utilise the carpark where the information centre is... but the centre is not open. Fortunately the toilet facilities are open as well.

So let's talk about how old those apostles are and how they were created??

Over twenty million years ago, billions of small marine animals lived and died in the sea. After their death, their skeletons remained, with the forms accumulating along the seafloor. These stakes of skeletons slowly formed into limestone formations, becoming the limestone cliffs once the ocean retreated. The powerful surf and the salt of the ocean started to erode the rugged limestone cliffs along Victoria’s Coastline. The constant wind and water carved out cavernous caves in the soft rock. Although their name suggests only twelve stacks, there are in fact thirty different limestone masses stretched along the coast, however, the only visible ones from the viewing areas are the eight apostles left. Due to the continuation of the stack’s erosion, eventually, the coastal shore will become non existent.

However, there is some light at the end of the tunnel, with the prediction of some brand-new apostles emerging from the coast in the near future.

So you see what you can see now while it was there... because over time there will be dramatic changes.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience at Twelve Apostles and for sharing some wonderful information about how they formed. For the information of future visitors, the Twelve Apostles have been closed in line with regional Victoria's stage 3 restrictions. More information can be found here: https://www.parks.vic.gov.au/get-into-nature/safety-in-nature/covid-19-update We look forward to inviting visitors back to enjoy the Twelve Apostles again soon. Thanks again, Parks Victoria

We arrived prior to the tourist busses from Melbourne would arrive and it was already crowdy. Fellow tourits from certain regions of the world won't give you any time to make a nice picture, sometimes you need to be bold in order to make good pictures.
Nice view, however in my opinion there are better options down the road.

Living regionally, our family took advantage to visit while near everyone city or elsewhere locked down.
September 2021, mid-morning. Massive car park empty and visitor centre (understandably) closed.
I do like the recent infrastructure built for hordes of tourists since I visited over a decade ago.
Huge wide paths led to the spectacular views of the coast and “apostle” rocks.
Apocalyptic quietness aside, we savoured the scenic solitude, enjoying the raw power of crashing waves.

We've al seen pictures of the Twelve Apostles but to see it in person was pretty grand. The views from the overlooks are amazing. We visited late in the day prior to sunset. I think it would have been just as stunning after sunrise.

FYI - We visited during early part of the Corona virus pandemic and it was pretty deserted. Must be a zoo with crowds and tour buses as evidenced by the fences along side the road leading up to the parking lot . The visitors center was closed (bathrooms were open).

It was indeed a great experience for me. We had so much fun. Our tour guide JACK from Hit The Road Tour was incredibly wonderful person . He gave us 3 stops bunus. We able to see wild Koalas, birds and Kangaroos. Our final bunos was we went to the Chocolate Factory and had some yummy ice cream

I would recommend him to other tourist who wants to visit site.

Have visited this attraction before COVID & found it far too busy, it was relatively easy to visit without all the bus loads of overseas visitors. The weather was not the best the day we visited but that added an extra dimension to the views.
Disappointingly all of the hand sanitizer stations I tried were empty (5 of). Most of the other visitors didn’t observe the social distancing /people density rules which was super disappointing
