Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Not a swiming beach but great for a walk. Rocky outcrops and small rockpools to explore. Great place for a stroll and to enjoy the sounds of crashing waves. The rocks have really interesting formations and patterns.

Lovely walk along the beach- the rocksare amazing- the water erosion over time has made some interesting rock formations and patterns in the rocks. The ground is uneven so good shoes help.
I love looking at the patterns on the rocks and in the crystal clear rock pools.

Rock pools and rocky outcrops for scrambling. Good way to stretch legs and walk between Lorne and the river outlet around the corner.

This is a nice beach, but doesn't look good for swimming. Lots of rocks and strong currents, but a nice sight to enjoy.

Shelly Beach is another stunning beach on the Great Ocean Road.
Such a beautiful coastline with more crystal clear blue water and sandy beaches.
Enjoy.

Located within walking distance of the famous Lorne Pier, Shelly Beach is without doubt one of the most spectacular natural phenomena we have ever had the privilege to experience.
[ Swimming Here is Definitely NOT Recommended ]:
This region of coastline incorporating a section of Lorne & the Pier is referred to as Point Grey & immediately south of the point are in fact two beaches one of which is Shelly Beach. Separated from the adjacent Point Grey Beach by an extensive rock platform Shelly is reported to be only one hundred [100] metres long. With numerous rocks & reefs dominating the waters & permanent, strong rips that run out through those rocks Shelly Beach is NOT suitable for swimming. In fact it is classed as "Unpatrolled" and there are no Surf Life Saving Services regularly provided for this particular spot.
[ But what about Surfing & Fishing You May Ask? ]:
There is reference to Fishing & Surfing being possible in this vicinity, however as is typical in Australia you may need to contend with just a few hazards such as Sharks, Topographic Rips, Strong Winds & a High Tide Range - so as always please research thoroughly if you do decide to venture out.
[Summary]:
Most of us would be aware of the saying that "a picture paints a thousand words' & my husband & I have tried our best by means of this review & the accompanying photographs to share with our fellow travellers just how incredibly magnificent this section of coastline is.
The reality is that to fully appreciate the beautiful patterns & sculpturing performed by the immense ocean forces one must get "up close and personal'. The geometric shapes & precision lines & grooves combined with the swirls & multi-layering in the rock ledges reminded me of a cross between Art Deco & Art Nouveau only far superior than anything man has ever made.
For those not up to scurrying over rocks then you can simply sit back on the gently sloping, grassy hills here at Shelly Beach enjoying a picnic, reading a book or simply relax to the magnificent sounds created by the waves.
Thank you for reading this review we hope that it is helpful. Please also refer to the photographs as they form a part of this review.
