About
The original Lyon Housemuseum opened in 2009. A unique, hybrid combination of a private residence and museum, the building is the first purpose-designed museum of its type internationally. Highly experimental, its new architectural form re-imagines the relationship between art and architecture, challenging conventional ideas about public and private space, as well as testing new ways of displaying and viewing art The Housemuseum Galleries opened in March 2019 on the adjacent site and represent a major expansion of the original Housemuseum. Designed by Corbett Lyon, the public Galleries are the result of a $14.5 million donation by the founding benefactors, the Lyon family, and is one of the largest dedicated contemporary art precincts in Melbourne Offering a new platform for works of contemporary art, architecture and design, the new Housemuseum Galleries provide a series of spaces for international and local exhibitions and events, where new ways of presenting and experiencing art

I was interested to visit The Lyon House museum after seeing it on a TV show. Well it did not disappoint. The owner was so lovely whilst giving us a tour and explaining the concept and art works around the home. Very informative, absolutely amazing and well worth a visit if you ever get the chance. A family who have opened up their home to share their collection with others. Awesome.

Read about it before you go. What incredible vision one person can have and have the talent and money to bring it alive.
The guided tour of the house by a family member is a must - just be respectful that it is still currently still their home. The telling really brings to life the purpose and vision of their lives through art.
Many amazing things including the Howard Arkley Venice Biennale exhibited ‘Fabricated Rooms’ which surrounds the upstairs dining room. The organ in the music room is spectacular and hearing it played (albeit by artificial intelligence) was stunning.
The purpose built gallery next door has a different feel but some great pieces as well - pay attention to what is on the slab beneath the building!
Catch the 109 tram to stop 39 and enjoy.

This is the sort of visit you need to plan well in advance. The HouseMuseum is open for a few days only in the middle of each month. You request a date and time and when you are confirmed you need to pay $25 per person in advance. On arrival at the appointed time, you join a group of about 20 people who are shown all around the building and everything is explained. There is so much to enjoy, not just the collection, but the bespoke building, its fine finishes, the organ which Corbett Lyon plays, the care and attention to details and the way everything fits together. At the end of the visit I felt I had had a very exciting and wondrous time. Taking a walk through the beautiful neighbourhood afterwards helped me to digest it all and appreciate that this is a very special piece of Melbourne.

Lyon house museum features an extensive collection of works from Australian artists. The private home tour and the public gallery both have works worth visiting if you are interested in this art style or would like to know more.

This is an amazing house that is opened to the public once a month. It is a booked tour of the house and the art gallery is next door. Architect Corbett Lyon designed and built a house to display his art collection. The house is spectacular and so is the art. The owner takes you on a tour of house explaining the art works and the design of the house. Really worth visiting.

A belated Xmas present - what a gift! I was blown away by the Lyonhouse Museum and am really looking forward to revisiting. Too much to take in in one visit. Such a shame the wait is so long but well worth it.
The architecture is brilliant, the workmanship superb and then there is the modern art - fabulous. All this described by the owner in a walk thru with 25 viewers.
Mr Lyon was a gracious extremely knowledgeable host who made it all come to life. As a super treat he played a piece of Bach on his contemporary organ in the music room....wow!!
The Lyon museum has just opened next door - I am sure it will be another treat. Highly recommended.

This museum is a masterpiece of architecture and modern art enveloped in a family home. So the bathrooms and bedrooms are out of bounds but the many cuboid art filled spaces are awesome. But. There were far to many in the group Yueji, the mistress of the home revealed her home to, so much remained unseen and unexplained.

The Lyon family opens their house to the public on selected days during the year. (Book online in advance.) The contemporary art is fascinating and the house itself extraordinary.
