Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Just a 20 minutes drive north of Colac, Red Rock lookout is well worth a visit. It provides sweeping 360 degrees vistas that includes both lake Corangamite and the prominent volcanic swales of this region.
Could insights provided to the past extensive activity across this volcanic shield region.

Rainy day didn’t discourage a detour to Red Rock.
Got kids mildly excited about the volcano ha. Short drive from Colac.
A short climb up wooden stairway from car park made for great 360 degree views.
Pity the vineyard below not open for wine tasting as
the red rock soil would create an interesting flavour.

As I walk with a quad stick, it was great to be able to drive to both lookouts and see the craters and lake both from the road and/or walking a very short distance.

This was a great "find" for us. We have driven through this area a number of times back in the 1990s but knew nothing about it. Local friends took us there and I found it quite incredible. The geology, wonderful views across many extinct volcanoes and then across the flat plains to distant Ottaways are the big surprise when you get up to the lookouts. It is worth the short detour.

This was an amazing place to visit. The dormant volcanoes look like something from outer space. It was very dry when I visited and the surrounding countryside bathed in yellow dry grass added to the ethereal look. Make sure you ascend the stairs to the viewing area and look back down on the carpark. It's a MUST to take your camera. If you have a panoramic camera make sure to use it. Video is a good thing too. This is just a big surprise in an area noted for its farming and dairying. Well worth the drive.

Amazing pictures!! I think that one excellent option is to come back from Warrnambool to Melbourne by A1 - after GOR - and stop over Cororroke and Coragulac to see the Red Rock.

It's as simple as that, not too far away with beautiful views of Colac, the Lake and surrounding districts.
Winery, breweries and a town with all you need not far away.

much of western victorian is covered by volcanic flows that started erupting about 8 million years ago and continuing thru to the present day with over 430 eruption points. From the red rock lookout you can see many small overlapping explosive volcanic craters which still look so fresh that the volcanic features of chunky scoria and splattered lava still evident. Recent dating of one crater suggest there eruptions here happened about 40,000 years ago so it is indeed one of the younger eruptions in the greater region. worth the short detour up from colac to the lookout to see the volcanic features if you have an hour to spare.

We took our thermos and went to see the early morning views from red rock. Enjoyed it all, and the pace and quiet. Only downside is that the most suitable bench is broken. Has quite a tilt to it. But we are still glad we went.

Can anyone direct me to the stone wall “stoney rise” I have seen pictures on the internet?
Written 28 December 2017
There a many examples of Dry Stone Walls in the Colac region. This is the area to the southeast, south and southwest of Lake Corangamite.
An impressive example of dry stone wall craftsmanship near Warrion, on the Warrion to Beeac Road.
The following Colac Community page referring to "The Stony Rises" may be of help, or the Information Centre at Colac may add more information.

Can anyone tell me how may stairs there are to climb Red Rock
Written 1 October 2017
The stairs to the lookout platform would be about 70. This gives a bit higher view than the car park, but you can see almost as much from the car park at the top plus driving to the second hill top car park you can get a great view anyway.
The platform gives you a good view, but the car park is almost as good.

If I remember correctly there were toilets and a picnic area at the base before you started up. None at the top though but it's a short drive. You can see plenty without climbing the stairs. We started to climb the stairs but wind was so strong that day we turned back. Did most of our viewing from the car and still was impressed.

Yes toilets and small play ground just after the turn off before you head up to the top.

Hi there, just wondering if you can remember what would be the best way to get to red rock when doing the Great Ocean Road. Would you go from Geelong to Colac then to Lorne missing the coast drive from Geelong to Lorne? Or Lorne to Colac then to Apollo Bay missing the road between Lorne and Apollo Bay? Also, although you haven't been there for a while do you remember if the road is suitable for hire cars? Any reply would be appreciated, thanks very much.

Can anyone tell me if there are stairs and toilet facilities in the Red Rock scenic area?
Written 24 October 2015
As the previous reviewer replied there are no toilet facilities at the top lookout. However you can see a fantastic view without going up the few steps that are there. I have bad arthritis and still managed the steps they are not too hard especially with a helping hand and a cane. We will be going back in a couple of weeks, hope to see the eagles.
