This track on the old train track so is relatively straight, smooth and flat. My wife and I easily rode 30 kms from Clare to Watervale and back on old treadlies. The turns offs for the wineries are well signed.

Beautiful views all the way on this scenic trail. Easily done on the electric bike hired. We had morning tea at the Velvet & Willow Cafe at Auburn and an epicurean lunch at the Watervale Hotel on route back to Clare which we would highly recommend.

The Riesling Trail is an absolute delight. Amongst the breathtaking scenery is nestled some of the finest wineries in the Clare Valley. Take your time along this leisurely trail, soak up the views and enjoy the peace and tranquillity not to mention the fresh, clean air. Pop into your favourite winery for a tasting and after a long cycle have a relaxing lunch in one of the many fine winery restaurants along the trail. We thoroughly enjoyed our wine tasting at Tim Adams and Sevenhills but the highlight of our afternoon was at Paulette’s winery where the food, wine, service and value is exceptional.

Took an ebike out from Clare Valley Cycle Hire and rode along the Riesling Trail until I got to Auburn. Stopped off along the way at Watervale General Store for a coffee and a slice of cake and carried on taking in the views. The trail is magnificent and the Clare Valley should be very pleased with how popular it has become. It is very well maintain, it is safe and apart from the occasional clown, it is an excellent way in which to see the Clare Valley. You can branch off left and right to visit the different wineries and go along some of the country roads to get to those slightly off the trail but everything still comes back to the trail. Clare is very lucky to have such a great facility for walkers, walkers with dogs, cyclists.

The Riesling Trial is an excellent way to see the Clare Valley and 'earn' the delicious restaurant meals and enjoy the local wine vintages. The walking is easy, well sign posted and with plenty of benches to rest or have lunch. Everyone we passed said 'hello' which added to the experience.

This is a terrific ride for both novice and experienced cyclist. My wife rarely rides a bike but with the rental ebike from Reisling trail bike rentals it was a breeze. I had a regular mountain bike and with a gradient no more than 2% found it fine. We booked the bikes for a whole day($120 for both.. a bargain) 9.30 start and read all information boards along the way. Coffee and cake at the Little Red Grape .. do the extra section one way for scenery, Auburn by 12.30. Returned to O’Leary Williams winery for cheese board lunch.. delicious, then onto Seven Hills winery for a tasting. Back by 3.30. Fantastic day! Oh and perfect weather.

We hired a couple of e-bikes in Clare and rode along the Riesling Trail as far as Skillogalee, stopping for wine tastings at Tim Adams and Sevenhill on the way. Took about 4 hours, including a stop for lunch. Wouldn't recommend doing this on a regular bike, especially if you're not used to riding!!! The trail is quite well signposted, with historical points of information along the way. The path was occasionally steep and made from packed gravel rather than sealed bitumen. That wasn't really a problem, but I thought it was worth mentioning. A great way to spend the day!

A wonderful way to explore the Clare Valley and the vineyards on foot or bike is along the Riesling Trail, a repurposed railway line, which stretches thirty three kilometres between Auburn and Barinia. Due to limited time and extreme weather conditions, high temperatures and winds, we had to cancel our half-day plans to hike south from Clare to discover the nearby countryside and vineyards. Instead we parked our car near the 'Mob of Sheep' outdoor installation and hiked south for fifteen mnutes fortunately mostly in the shade then back. Disappointing for us but on our future travel list.

Fantastic experience, highlight of our trip, don’t miss it. We took out the ebikes for half a day and covered plenty of territory with total ease and comfort. Kent was most helpful and obliging. In fact he was fun. He has a great range of bikes in excellent order and at competitive prices.

We will be driving to South Australia and while there would like to cycle or walk the reisling trail. Once we get to the end, how do we get back to our car? Thank you

You need to return back to your vehicle by bike or foot. No public transport in this region.

Hi there, my partner and I would like to ride the trail in August. We plan to do the full thing there and back in one day. We would like to get the more downhill ride on the way back though. Can you tell me which end we should start at to get the downhill on the return? Thanks!
We want to walk or cycle the Reisling trail over TWO days but don't want to carry baggage. What do you suggest about staying somewhere midway and then getting back to starting point somehow? Public transport available?

There’s a heap of options around the area from bnb’s to motels - when we went we stayed at Clare which is at the start - as for public transport there is none that I’m aware of - Barossa does have a taxi service that should be able to take you around (normal SA taxi rates)

Hullo! How to do road bikes fare on the Riesling trail surface/s? Are we better off hiring off-road bikes?
Tristan S

It’s sealed most of the way with a small gravel like stone - personally I wouldn’t ride my road bike on it - we used mountain bikes - although some commuter style treaded tyres would cope ok - you can also ride on the road in certain sections too

We were there during the week and were surprised at how much was closed. If there are places you really want to visit I'd ring to confirm. We also found that advertised times were'nt 100% reliable.

We stayed at clarevale b&b which was great and a couple of hundred metres from trail. Otherwise we cycled past a couple of places on track. Clare gives you the best range of dining options, supermarkets, pubs etc
