- MsTingleToowoomba, Australia81 contributionsGrand old Lady being restoredWow was impressed mostly by it's size. It would have been a grand lady in its time. The views are God as well. So good that it was rescued. I hope they find the funds to bring it back to what it once was. Such hard work has already been put in. I wondered if the government could help them out, would be a pity for the work not to be completed.Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 6 June 2024
- Dana MBrisbane, Australia64 contributionsGreat place to visitWe stopped in here on our way home from Stanthorpe and arrived late morning, which gave us plenty of time to pay for access to tour the homestead & grounds. Afterwards we decided to have lunch here which was delicious. They also do great scones by all accounts, so maybe next time! Highly recommended stop if you want to learn a bit about local history. The staff were very friendly and if you are milkshake lover, you'll be very happy indeed.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 4 July 2024
- GayleJPBrisbane, Australia651 contributionsInsight into the pastLoved visiting this old homestead, sadly almost demolished in the past, and left to decay. Work has gone on to make restorations but it’s a huge undertaking. The cafe has a small but tasty menu of sandwiches and filo pastries. I’d recommend to anyone visiting the area.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 July 2024
- Kawm2003Scenic Rim, Australia56 contributionsStep back in timeWe visited for Jazz at the Homestead which was a great day of music set in a beautiful location. After the event we toured the homestead and grounds and learnt about the rich history of the place and the families who resided there over the years. So much work has gone into restoring this site already, it’s astonishing to see how it looked when it was first saved to now. So important to conserve and protect historical buildings with such significance to the local area. There is a cafe on site, which also serves a delicious looking high tea. There are plenty of events hosted at the property such as seasonal markets and after dark dinner and tours. Worth stopping by this grand old homestead which is open 10 am to 4 pm Wednesday to Sunday.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 August 2024

Taking a weekend road-trip around the Warwick region, whilst travelling the Cedar Route we stopped by Glengallan Homestead to visit their cafe for refreshment.
The Lamington Cake and Scones with Cream and Jam were delicious and the coffee and milkshake were good too. Service at the cafe was friendly and efficient and the food and drinks were reasonable value.

Surprisingly we had this great example of grand colonial architecture to ourselves. The collection of artefacts in the reception/cafe area give a tease of what to expect. Before entering the house the interpretation boards along the path gave an insight into the significance of the house. The house is truly grand with extensive views of the area, especially from the expansive upper level verandah. Those responsible for the restoration have achieved an excellent balance of returning to close to its glory but leaving sections to show what state it was in and with insights into construction method. The furniture and information boards achieve the same perfect balance.
Congratulations to all involved in allowing future generations to gain an insight of colonial Australia

We visited and toured through the homestead this past week and what a privilege it was to experience this property in person. Upon paying for entry, we were advised the property showed both some restored state and the original derelict state, so visitors could compare. That information is repeated in printed material issued to visitors and stated on numerous signs around the property interior... so to read a one star review, complaining and pretending to be unaware of this fact, is disappointing. The property is in safe condition and clearly checked for safety, which would be an insurance requirement for someone opening such a facility to the public. The building itself is stunning and they have labelled everything clearly and given wonderful historical accounts of each room and it's facilities. I would like to visit again and take my timber joiner father, as he too would appreciate such a beautiful piece of history. Tour was good value for money.

Enjoyed our visit to Glengallan. The homestead alone was well worth the visit. The building reminds you of how rich Queensland's wool industry once was. The fact that it was unoccupied and left to rot for so many years also reflects the way Australians lack respect for their history.
Had lunch in the small cafe. Great, simple, fresh fare that my wife and I really enjoyed.
Plenty of parking for the bike in the carpark and only a little walking, so getting around in your 'bike boots' was no trouble. Visit next time you go for a ride up to the Downs.

I have always been intrigued by Glengallan Homestead since a child in the fifties. Watching it in disrepair I was delighted to hear of its pending restoration, and finally visited it today. Knowing what state it was in previously it was wonderful to see the work they have done on it. I actually quite liked the fact that it is not “restored” in full as the story of the house and the families that have lived there is very poignant, and the remaining disrepair is an indication of the history of the area as well. It also shows the amount of work that has been done just to make the place safe for visitors and the amount of work still required if it is going to be restored to its former glory - if that is a desirable outcome.
I probably have different expectations to some people, but I really enjoyed my visit and I thought the information provided was very informative.
The cafe is also a good place to stop for a snack or a meal between Brisbane and Warwick/Stanthorpe.
If people are into history then I think they would really enjoy a visit, so whether or not it is a good place to visit is up to individual interests.

We met friends as our first stop on a Scenic Rim long weekend
First the restaurant……..coffee not good but scones and toasted corn beef sandwiches were excellent. So a big tick there….
The Homestead……..we were told that 2 million dollars has been spent on this property? Not sure where ……graffiti still on walls and renovations not complete We paid our entry fee but there was no guided tour that other reviews have mentioned, not sure why???
So overall the homestead was very disappointing. Would love to see it restored to is full glory…that would make it a real tourist destination…but it’s not there ATM
As an overall tourist attraction I can only give it average

Hi, thanks so much for your feedback, it's much appreciated.
The idea of the restoration was to leave a glimpse of where the house had come from, a complete ruin. A complete restoration was never the plan, but to leave a little of the history of the house, good and bad. The story of the house is all about boom to bust, so the character of the ruin is essential to the story.
Hope to see you again someday :)

What a precious little gem. Our architecture is only young so we need to preserve the old as much as we can - and isn't this a perfect example?! I loved the way they have restored part of the house, yet other parts are yet to be touched. I loved the photos showing its sad state before the restoration works started. I loved the photos from when it was last occupied. We stumbled across the property purely by accident and were so happy we turned off the highway just in case there was something interesting that had attracted so many cars. Turns out, the market was on so the place was buzzing with locals and tourists. The coffee shop was so busy we didn't wait around (shame, given the reviews below). We handed over the entry fee for the house without hesitation, happy to know the funds were going to be put back into its preservation. Beautiful, stunning, precious and worth the stop.

Glengallan Homestead has been restored to the degree that a house of it's period needs to be. I also have driven past many years ago when you were not able to go in and walk around and see the history of the house and walk around inside.
My first impression now was appreciation for what has been restored and what has been achieved, wow! Love the little surprised upstairs in the floor!
The cafe is nice for a cuppa and a snack, run with a small staff that are multi skilled.
We will be back, there is too much information about the history to take all in on one visit. The entry fee is ten dollars, very reasonable. Friends have told us they have markets here on some Sundays. Thank you see you again.

It was nice to stop in and look around this old homestead have passed it many times - love the old staircase and the sandstone blocks the verandas were awesome, could imagine an old family living here in times of past. We paid the $10 to see through the home but thought it was a guided tour. But we just wandered through the home on our own. The views from the property were nice, we stayed and had a coffee at the coffee shop on our way out.

Visited the homestead last week with a few friends. Decided to stop in at the café for morning tea before we went through the property. Despite it being early and only four other people in the café, we waited nearly 25 mins. for two of the tiniest scones I've ever seen with a dash of cream and jam. (as there are usually two in a serve, hubby and I thought we'd share for morning tea) We sat and waited, and waited for our two coffees. Hubby eventually went and asked and they had 'forgotten' our coffees!. So another 20 mins and our coffee arrived. We had read reviews on the café beforehand and it had looked OK. ??? It was only $10. to go in which was reasonable. It would have been a magnificent home in it's day and it's so sad to see the state of disrepair. I actually wondered if some of the ceilings were safe. They are doing work there, but it would be wonderful to be rich and be able to restore it to its former glory. The grounds were nice and the surrounding countryside nicely greening up after a little rain. This would make a brilliant reception house. I don't think it's worth a second visit, but if we did, I'd take a picnic somewhere. Our friends also said they had to wait forever for their lunch and coffees later. I guess the staff are not really experienced in hospitality too much, but it wouldn't hurt to have a little 'training'

Hi Barbara, I'm sorry your cafe experience wasn't up to scratch. We have a few new staff in training so rest assured they are heading on the right track. Hopefully we get the opportunity to make it up to you another time :)
