Rediscover the magic of a bygone era aboard the historic Mary Valley Rattler. The scenic Mary Valley is a place where you can experience the friendly laid back atmosphere of rural living at its best. The Rattler's 46 kilometre round trip starts at Gympie and after crossing over the Mary River, chugs its way rhythmically around an abundance of curves, across bridges and numerous gentle hills. Your journey passes through Dagun, home to a beautiful heritage station before continuing to the quaint community of Amamoor nestled in the centre of the Mary Valley. You'll marvel at the restored turntable installed at the Amamoor Station and fascinated by the process required to turn the locomotive around for its return to Gympie. Make sure you leave plenty of time to explore the restored Gympie Station which houses a historic display, a gift shop and a cafe offering dine in and takeaway options. The Mary Valley Rattler is more than a train ride. It's a half-day adventure into history.

Very nice high tea experience with lots of sweet foods. Host Janice and waitress Shane were excellent. Recommend a two-and-half hour train trip for something different.

This was so much better than I expected, the ride was great, the scenery along the way supported by an in cabin commentary. The return journey was broken up with two stops, one a wine and cheese tasting. A great day.

What a great experience. Beautiful, heritage train meandering through loveley countryside. The stations en route had local craft stalls and live music which added to the whole atmosphere.
The volunteer staff were great, especially Maralyn who was so helpful and enthusiastic.

We recently went of the tasting train and what a great morning we had. I couldn't believe how generous the tasting platters were on the train with each person getting their own (enough food for 2 people really ) Once back at the station a 2 course meal & drink followed and it was superb. Seriously if you walk away hungry then its your own fault. As for the train we were on the old silver bullet rail motor. Gee did this take me back to my childhood days. The whole rattler crew were so friendly and helpful including all back at the station & restaurant. Do yourself a favour and take the time to visit & ride the Valley Rattler.

The trip was great, seats comfortable, service good, brilliant views.
We had our own booth/cabin which was great.
Wish we had purchased lunch for arrival as cafes in town closed on a Saturday.

Amazing that this experience is dog friendly. I took my little dog and we had the best time. Lovely welcome reception at Gympie Station, we made our way down the back to the 'Guards' carriage. We had a cabin to ourselves, clean bowl of water, poo bags and bin provided. Made to feel comfortable and safe and well informed of safety procedures. Lovely stop at Amamoor. Volunteers were all friendly, waved off at the station and welcomed back. A great morning out and would recommend this experience

Can you take snacks on board the rattler

OMG, I'm just reading this question now as I didn't see the little dot at the top indicating your query. Maybe too late, so sorry. I would say yes to the snacks and I can't recall if they sold them on board or not.My husbands thinks not. Staff do come around with a lunch menu so you can order in advance, pay them on board and the meal will be ready for you at the station when you return, your table is reserved for you. You can also order a drink at the same time for your table. Happy travels. :)

What is there to do in Amamoor during the stop?

There's market stalls and a general store across the road if you wanted lunch there. There's also a turntable that the locomotive turns on which isn't a common sight anymore. I would say the turn table is the main attraction there. Sundays stop at amamoor for 30-40 minutes and then stop at dagun for about the same time and dagun has live music, wine and cheese tasting and a small trinket stall and shop for drinks and snacks. There is also a play area for the kids.

It's a 3 hr drive to Gympie from Coolangatta. Alternatively a train journey from Brisbane.The Rattler is a tourist attraction and not suited as an overnight stay. You would need to look for accommodation in Gympie.

At one time the MVR ran through to Imbil; are there any plans to re-open this part of the line as I cannot see any mention of this in your web-site

At this stage there are no plans to take the train through to Imbil, and would only be considered in the future if major funding was secured. Please contact Gympie Regional Council for any further detail if required.
Can we go inside the steam train cab/ driver fireman area. Im interested of what it looks like inside.

The steam train I believe only runs on certain days of the week
possibly the weekend.
I'm not sure if you are allowed into the engine but can certainly look at it from the platform

How much does it cost for the whole day one

As of Jan 2109, the tickets for the train ride are $55 per adult, much less for children and concession holders. The journey, Gympie to Amamoor and return, takes 3 hours so that price seems good value to me. If you are booked on the afternoon train, which departs old Gympie station at 2pm, get there an hour earlier and have lunch in the restored dining room. The meals are well priced - my barramundi, salad & chips was $16 and absolutely delicious!
