    Enjoyable morning on the Rattler
My husband & I travelled on the Rattler for his birthday. It was a very enjoyable morning. The actual train trip was fun & the scenery was fabulous. Stopping at Amamoor was very interesting as all the travellers were able to witness the turntable turning the engine around in readiness for our trip back to the station in Gympie. The staff at Gympie Historic station were very happy, professional and so friendly. As soon as we arrived back at the station our lunch which we had previously ordered was ready for us in the cafe. Also a couple of weeks later we joined the Rattler station & workshops tour which was interesting & well presented by our tour guide. Both of these experiences were well worth doing.
Hi Neet55 Thank you for celebrating your husband's birthday with us. We're very happy you both enjoyed your day. It was wonderful to see you again for the Station & workshop Tour. We look forward to welcoming you back again soon. Cheers MVR Team

    Ghost Train - Halloween
We went on the Halloween Ghost Train last night, on the VIP carriage. We dressed up, and were glad we did. It was so much fun, and the characters that joined the trip to enhance our experience were amazing, in particular Dracula (what a scream), the Dead Bride, and Wednesday. They totally completed the night. Thanks Mary Valley Rattler staff and volunteers, you always know how to please us travellers!
Hi Yvonne22266 We're so glad to hear you had a spook-tacular time aboard our Halloween Ghost Train, VIP style no less! Dressing up surely adds to the fun, doesn't it? We'll pass on your compliments to Dracula, the Dead Bride, and Wednesday—they'll be thrilled to hear they completed your night. Thanks for the shout-out to our staff and volunteers; we're always aiming to deliver a thrilling experience. We can't wait to welcome you back for another ride! Cheers MVR Team

A yummy revisit to the past
Silver Bullet high tea. It's great to go back in time. Thanks, Janet, for your passion and knowledge of the Gympie area. Yummy high tea, but it could be even better with fewer sweets and a couple of historical/ traditional ribbon sandwiches! Thanks heaps to friendly staff and volunteers.
Hi Inspire27774385129 We're thrilled to hear you enjoyed your journey back in time on the Silver Bullet High Tea experience! Janet will be delighted to know that her passion and knowledge added to your day. We appreciate your feedback on the high tea menu; more savoury treats are certainly something we'll consider for future rides. A big 'thank you' from our staff and volunteers; we're here to make your trip memorable. We're looking forward to having you onboard again! Cheers MVR Team

    Better than expected
This was so much better than I expected, the ride was great, the scenery along the way supported by an in cabin commentary. The return journey was broken up with two stops, one a wine and cheese tasting. A great day.

Christmas Twighlight train Gympie to Dagun return
Great experience for the family, especially little kids (2-6yrs) that like Peppa Pig’s ‘George’s train ride’. Choo Choo! There was colouring in inside station for kids too, of the Mary Rattler. A storm came across, so it was fun trying to keep rain out of the old ‘drop down’ windows, some got a bit wet, but the breeze and views are lovely. It’s how it would have been for our elders past and present. The air smells like it might have hundreds of years ago. The staff were welcoming, friendly and helpful. Station ticketing & bar staff had good customer service skills. The views were great and they advised when it was a good time to take a photograph of the train going around the corner. We thought Santa was walking through the train, but he was just in Dagun when we stopped at the Christmas markets. The markets were cute stalls, wine and cheese tasting, memorabilia & couple of Dagun postcards, food vans, circus roving performer, Santa visit, building blocks, live music, raffle. Just enough time to look around and grab some food. On this occasion: fish n chips, pizza oven, chicken &loaded fries. Plus there’s a drinks trolley that comes through the train each way.
Hi K9019CCsamt We're absolutely delighted to hear about your family's great experience aboard the Mary Valley Rattler! It's wonderful to know that the journey resonated so well with your little ones, drawing parallels to their favourite shows like Peppa Pig’s ‘George’s train ride’. We're glad the colouring activities and the rustic charm of the train, including the adventure with the ‘drop down’ windows during the storm, added to the authenticity of your experience. It's fantastic to hear that our staff's welcoming and helpful nature contributed positively to your journey. We're proud of our team for their excellent customer service skills. Thank you for sharing your feedback. We look forward to welcoming you and your family back aboard the Mary Valley Rattler for more memorable journeys in the future. Cheers MVR Team

A Train Ride that’s Worth The Fare
A highly recommended activity. We had The Club Car Experience and it was as described. All the volunteers were excellent, snacks and Drinks were nice, and Deb M. was a very good hostess. Thanks everyone for making our day a memorable trip.

A really great day out. Thoroughly worth the effort.
I took my 89 yr old mum on the VIP Club car for a Christmas present. She (and I) thoroughly enjoyed it. From start to finish the day was amazing. The staff were incredibly helpful and kind. All food was delicious and plenty to eat. The train is in beautiful condition. I would thoroughly recommend the experience. If you want a coffee before the train goes make sure you order it from the cafe at the station before 9.30. I was just after and told it was too late. Oh well the coffee at Amamoor was nice and I bought some lovely “wet bags” from a stall too. A bonus 😊
Hi Lauren What a heartwarming review! We're over the moon to hear that you and your mum had a fantastic day out with us on the VIP Club Car. It sounds like the perfect Christmas present and we're thrilled to have been a part of your special memories. It's especially wonderful to know that your 89-year-old mum enjoyed the experience just as much as you did. Our team strives to make every journey on the Rattler comfortable, enjoyable and memorable for guests of all ages, and it's fantastic to hear we hit the mark for you. Thank you for complimenting our staff's helpfulness and kindness, as well as the delicious food. It's feedback like this that makes our day! We're also glad to hear that the train's beautiful condition added to your experience. We appreciate your recommendation and your tip about ordering coffee before 9.30 am. Glad you enjoyed the coffee at Amamoor and found some lovely treasures at the stall too! We'd love to welcome you and your mum back for another journey through the beautiful Mary Valley. Maybe this time you can get that pre-journey coffee! Cheers MVR Team

    Even good in the rain
We booked the pet carriage due to having to bring an elderly dog. To our surprise we got a whole section to ourselves, dog water bowl included.it was a rainy day but that did not impede the fun or the views. The lunch stop included local produce and live music, just bring an umbrella. Toilets available at the lunch stop. Historical facts are given over PA on the way. Great for all ages and there is wheelchair access. It cost $25 extra for the dog and well worth it.
Hi kazh292 We're delighted to hear that you had a wonderful experience in our pet carriage! It's fantastic that you and your elderly dog could enjoy a whole section to yourselves. Rain or shine, our journeys offer stunning views and unforgettable moments. We're thrilled you enjoyed the local produce and live music during the lunch stop, even in the rain. Thank you for sharing your positive experience and highlighting the accessibility options we offer. We hope to welcome you and your furry friend back aboard soon! Cheers MVR Team

Memorable Silver Bullet High Tea Train Trip
From the moment we arrived at the Old Gympie Railway Station the experience was excellent. The booking in process was efficient and informative. There was time to view the museum before boarding the train for the two hour high tea train trip. The high tea was excellent with a Queensland sparkling rose and teas. During the journey the staff shared important pieces of information about the workings of the train system. It was lovely to see the Mary Valley as we traveled along. A great experience.
Hi Debbie Thank you for your wonderful review! We’re delighted to hear that your experience with the Mary Valley Rattler was excellent from start to finish. We look forward to welcoming you back for another memorable trip! Cheers MVR Team

    Saturday Silver Bullet Train trip
Great departure spot at Gympie Station which is worth seeing on its own. The Silver Bullet is beautifully renovated with lovely wooden panelling in the carriages. All the volunteer staff were knowlegeable, enthusastic and good humoured. Lovely countryside and a pleasure to sit back ane enjoy the approx hour up and back. The volunteer giving information in each carriage should definitely have a portable microphone of some sort as it was very difficult to hear what they were saying over the noise of the train. Not nice for the vollie to have to shout either. The time spent at Dagun Station far too long at over 2hrs. We realised the Mary Valley Arts Trail was on which was nice but not enough to spend that long there. Mostly a truly enjoyable train journey. Thanks
Hi 359suzannet Thank you for your detailed review! We're delighted to hear that you enjoyed your day. Our volunteers will be pleased to know they added to your experience, we'll pass it on to them. We appreciate your suggestion about providing portable microphones for the volunteers giving information in each carriage. We understand how important it is to hear their insights clearly without them having to shout. We're sorry to hear that the time spent at Dagun Station felt too long, even with the Mary Valley Arts Trail. We'll take your feedback into consideration for future scheduling. Overall, we're glad you had a truly enjoyable train journey and look forward to welcoming you back soon! Cheers MVR Team

Everything was fabulous so the entire experience; I cannot single out any part better than any other. We (myself, my wife and two close friends) were booked on the "Ride & Dine Package, and we stayed at the Verandah Motel nearby for both the night before and the night after the trip.
We started with breakfast at Rusty Rails Cafe just after 8.00am, had time to have a good look around the Gympie Station precinct before departure at 10.00am, thoroughly enjoyed the on train experience, the stop at Amamoor and then the post train lunch at the Rusty Rail.
The service in all aspects was great, and the volunteers were just so cheerful, efficient and friendly.
We even came back for breakfast at The Rusty Rail on the following day and viewed the Rail Motor ready for departure.

We took the afternoon 3 hr train Gympie to Amamoor return. The train and station have been beautifully restored. Some of the senior staff/volunteers lacked personal skills and were a bit officious. It was also embarrassing as we were bluntly asked several times if we would like to make a $5 donation toward the restoration of the carriages; so what does our fare go toward? The young male guide we had in our carraige was very good, however as he was introducing himself and providing details of the journey and train he was unnecessarily rudely interupted 3 times by other staff. Unfortunately the in-carraige speaker commentry was very hard to hear. There was not much at the one hour stop Amamoor, one general store, and a café. However for the train enthusiast this is the point the engine turns around on a turntable to rejoin at the other end of the carriages. It would have been nice if the train slowed passing over the Mary River so passengers could take some photo's.

This darling train operation is run in the manner it was run during its times of apogee, following all the protocols of the time. And the train station is a beautiful area of very high ceilings, with a nicely appointed restaurant which tables and chairs take us kindly back in time. Families noted enjoying a meal, talking to each other and laughing, waiting to be called on board.
Our personal experience coincided with Australia Day celebration as the train took us to Amamoor, through the beautiful Mary River Valley (kangaroos spotted from the train) and back. At Amamoor there was a barbeque, Australian music being played by a husband/wife team, The Wilson Duo, and Australians celebrating their Special Day in a most relaxed, sensible and calm manner. The highlight game was the Mop Throwing Competition :):)
We travelled in the Club Car where we enjoyed a delicious local cheese (from Kenilworth diaries) platter with condiments and wine. The area has excellent cheeses from Kenilworth and from Maleney, a bit further south.
Simple fun experiences like this one are reminiscent of a time gone by and need our support to continue being available as part of our heritage.

We did the Twilight Express on 19/12/2020 with our grand kids aged 6 and 5. It was 5 year old's birthday. We thought it would just be another train ride and were just going for the kids, but also loved it. Beautiful green country through the Mary Valley, great commentary throughout the trip, cold drinks and a platter supplied to enjoy along the way. Plenty of staff to attend to us, just the right amount of time at Ammamoor before returning to Gympie. Voted by our grandson as the 'best day ever' and seconded by parents and grand parents.

Back to the old days. Lovely trip through the Mary Valley, staff were all volunteers who were so helpful, friendly and very knowledgeable. Served a packed cheese platter and wine. Travelled to the end of the line where we all got off the train to watch the engine being turned around on the turntable ready for the return trip. Would happily go back for another trip. Stopped along the way to visit the local markets.

This steam train adventure leaves Gympie from the old Gympie Station so it travels initially through suburban areas before leaving the city behind on its way to Amamoor. The views from the train are fabulous and give the traveller a great insight into the Mary Valley area. It is not named the Rattler without good reason, maybe Rocker and Rattler would be more appropriate but either way, it is good fun. It is run and crewed by volunteers who do an outstanding job in all ways, including commentary as you proceed.
A number of options for travel are offered and which one you opt for determines which carriage you travel in and what food/drink you receive. We chose the option that provided lunch at the Rusty Rails Cafe at the station on return to Gympie and were glad we did.
A fabulous day out.

Leaving Gympie train station on a old steam loco. Steadily going through the lush countryside with a rattle, whistle and a puff of coal smoke. Knowledgable staff who make time to talk and explain the local history. A hour each way.quick bite to eat at the end of the line before the loco is put on a steam powerd turn table for the return leg. Allow around one hour each way.

Fabulous day in a beautiful part of Queensland. From the moment you arrive you're greeted by energetic, welcoming staff who genuinely want to make your day special. Our Carriage Attendant Pete engaged in conversation with my kids and I, informed us of various historical points of interest and made our visit all the more enjoyable. The stop at Amamoor is so pretty and was great watching the train turn on the tracks before the ride home. The valley views are beautiful and there's plenty of photo ops and snack cart options on the journey. Beware of train windows...they make for nice enclosed spaces to house mobile phones 😂.
10/10 for the assistance provided in retrieving my phone after we got back and for sharing in the moment, laughing with us while I laughed at myself! Extremely communicative and helpful when we had to return after closing time, once they retrieved the phone.
Totally recommend this tour with wonderful crew (TIP - don't hold your phone against the window!)

I totally recommend the silver bullet high tea experience. From our arrival at the well maintained station and Rusty Rails cafe till the end of the train trip we were warmly greeted and all the staff (mainly volunteers) were enthusiastic and helpful. Seeing the area was enhanced by our guide Marilyn who informed us of the places of interest throughout the whole journey. She was brilliant. The food was generous and amazing. What a great time we had. Thanks to the Mary Valley Rattler staff and volunteers. Wonderful.

My partner and I caught the Classic Rattler in the First Class carriage. What a treat! We enjoyed every minute of it. The food was first class with local produce. The staff were friendly and helpful. We rode the train out and stayed in Amamoor for a look around. We spent our time talking to the volunteers who love their job and have many interesting tales to share. Back to Gympie and time to look around the lovely restored train station.
