We stopped off in South West Rocks, where we stopped for a short walk to admire the costal view. We continued along the tourist route and accidentally missed a turning and ended up at Arakoon National Park.

We stopped in the small car park to admire the costal view.
We were just turning the car round when we spotted some kangaroos, so we parked up to get a closer look.

We walked on to the grassy area where they were resting in the shade, when we suddenly noticed there were loads of them.

We walked slowly towards them and were able to get fairly close without them being worried about us. It was great to see them in the wild, so we were glad we took a wrong turn!

Arakoon is small as far as national parks go in that small space it manages to pack in some top-notch, five-star attractions, starting with the historic Trial Bay Jail. There are great sites of natural beauty here too, including the serene Little Bay. Try and visit in the early morning when the (very chilled) local kangaroos are out in numbers, taking things very easy. The park also boasts a number of excellent bushwalking paths, along and above the coastline to the German monument, which offers terrific views, and through the rainforest, where encounters with wildlife are definitely on the cards.

Arriving intoSouth West Rocks I looked across the beach to Arakoon NP area, This is around Trial Bay Gaol area where I have been twice before. We went for a drive around that area and many on the tour decided about going into the gaol and fortunately I could get a glimpse of the many campers below in the Arakoon area as well one out to the sea. I was also hoping to get up to the highest lighthouse on the eastern seaboard, the Smokey Cape Lighthouse named by Capt Cook when he sighted smoke wafting there as he sailed by but this was not on the itinerary and although I have seen that three times, many missed out on a wonderful sight.
Ah South West Rocks and Arakoon National Park. Always busy at Xmas time.

Loved the monument hill walk, then the loop back via the bush. Stunning views, loads of kangaroos - some on the track and some at Little Bay. We did it early morning and only saw one other person.
Would love to do it again

Unfortunately a number of the trails were closed as they repair them after the recent floods - but I managed to find some that were open. Lovely coastal heartland and temperate rain forest style. Lots of birds and kangaroos to bump into and some great coastal views. Requires a reasonable level of fitness.

A beautiful walk that starts at Trial Bay Gaol, we parked at the Gaol, there are maps available at the Gaol, it starts just a short walk down the road on the left hand side, it is an easy walk that takes around 1 to 1 & a half hours depending on how much you stop to admire the views & wildflowers, when we arrived st Little Bay there were heaps of Kangaroos grazing on the grass, there is a lot of history & information along the walk & benches if you want to rest, we loved it.

This track starts at either Little Bay or Trial Bay Gaol it is 1.4 km one way. It climbs along a ridge with spectacular views, plenty of native plants and viewing spots to take in the scenery. The track takes you past the German Monument. If you keep your eyes peeled there are native animals to spy, including ospreys that glide above the cliff. At Little Bay you will see lots of kangaroos. This is one of our favourite tracks.

this is a great park with nature walks taking in bush forests and remote beaches , not a difficult walk with some spectacular lookout points

I used to live in Arakoon in the 70's and have returned several times over theyears. It is such a magic place. The views are fabulous, the beaches so clean, clear and inviting and the walks superb.
My husband and I camped below Trial Bay Gaol a stone throw from the beach. We walked up to the German monument and further to Little Bay. We swam and caught waves on the point in our kayak.
The facilities are fantastic and if you are into photography sunrise at Little Bay is amazing and sunsets over Trial Bay are stunning.

Drove early in the morning to see the sunrise from the Lighthouse. Went via the Old Gaol and stumbled on the National Park camping ground. Wish I had brought my tent. Will be going back as the camp grounds are very quiet, picturesque and plenty of wildlife to watch in their once peaceful habitat.
