A friend of mine told me, that the Cowra Visitor Information Centre, is a must visit… so I took his advice and did that first… we’re very happy to have done it. Unfortunately, the place was flooded out 12 weeks prior and it’s under renovation BUT… the famous hologram ‘Claire’ is still going strong! The hologram theatre is free entry (there is a donations box at the front of the hut, if you wish to make a donation) and the hologram triggers off, upon entry to ‘The Cowra Breakout’ hut. Claire tells her story and the WWII history that took place in Cowra – a short presentation but enjoyable and very informative. There are many posters and historical photos for you to view and read – you could easily spend an hour there or more. Plenty of artefacts on display and they also sell local produce / wines; crafts; souvenirs and hampers… ideal gifts for family and friends. The staff were super friendly, smiley faces and very helpful. One of the staff gave me a well detailed brochure of what I could do in Cowra – it covers everything, from dining, tours to places of attractions to visit. Yes… this is an essential first stop for visitors to the Cowra region and should I find myself back in Cowra, definitely will visit this place again, as I’m also curious what the place would look like, after renovations are completed.

This place is great, made all the more special when you realise they were completely flooded out a little while back. The staff are amazing and will bend over backwards to help you find what you want (and sometime even what you didnt know you wanted...). We only had one full day (and a bit of the arvo before when we visited this place), and the very helpful lady told us all the great places to visit. She also suggested we go and watch the "hologram show" which is inside the visitors center. O.M.G!!!! This has apparently been showing for many years now, and rivals some of the technology we have seen at major theme parks. It is simply breathtaking. Sitting on the seats in front of the "presentation" you are treated to a 9 minute show that tells the story of the POW breakout from one womans perspective. She moves around the little "stage", coming to life right in front of your eyes. Now I am building it up a little, but it is WELL WORTH THE VISIT!! For just 9 minutes you are pulled into the story an start to identify with the protagonists. You wont regret it. If you are a bit peckish, there are also some places to get a nibble or a coffee next door.

At the Cowra visitors centre you will meet Lawrence, Rose and Lexie, if you allow your self the time and are not scared to ask questions these three locals who provide information for the traveller through the area will bestow upon you the history of Cowra and the region like only someone who has lived and loved the Cowra region all their lives can.
They are happy if they are not busy (come back if they are, it's worth it) to regale visitors with historic antidotes, scandals and tails from the area.
While there the hologram presentation of Cowra breakout is a must see and is free (do this before you visit the camp the cemetery and Garrison gate's.
If you are visiting during the times of covid you can stock up on wines and artisan produce to avoid the need for booking appointments with the cellar doors as drive ups are not encouraged at the moment. This a must stop visitors center.

Very helpful staff and lots of free brochures, pamphlets and maps. A sensible way of planning your day in the area. There is a wonderful hologram theatre presentation about the Cowra Breakout, and a lot of information about the POW history of Cowra. Well worth visiting this VIC.

Super friendly and helpful staff!
Very interesting hologram about the Cowra Breakout, told by a girl called Claire. It gives you a great insight what happened in Cowra before visiting all other sites.
You can also buy nice gifts, good wine from the surrounding areas and take maps to help you get the most out of the area in and around Cowra.

This info centre had it all! They had lovely local knitting, which was well-priced.I bought some baby clothes and a scarf as gifts. I loved that there was a good selection of local wines and gourmet foods for purchase. There was also the hologram display on the breakout which was beautiful to look at and informative without being boring. A must to visit!

We stopped in Cowra recently at the information centre.
The staff were all really friendly and recommended we watch a holographic short film put together.
It was honestly amazing! I’ve never seen anything like it before and my daughter and I learnt so much in the short time we were there about Cowra and it’s war history.

Staff very welcoming as soon as we walked in. Lots of locals doing Christmas shopping but the staff managed to look after all of us. Offered us local wine tasting and great range of local foods.
Watched hologram documentary of Cowra POW camp and breakout. Really really good and highly recommend a visit just to see that.
Got lots of information about what to do around Cowra.
Really well run information centre and obviously proud locals who love their town.

The ladies who manage the Visitors Centre are knowledgeable, helpful and fun. The hologram experience of the break out is a must and as it’s difficult to get a cellar door wine tasting at local wineries, just do it at the visitors centre. We tasted up to 8 local wines and took a bunch home. There is a lot of local produce available.

Starting my trip with the hologram show here was the best idea. It was a nice way to learn about the Breakout before having a look at the PoW camp. The staff also provided good advice where to take my dog for a nice walk, what else there was to see close to Cowra, and the Rose garden was right there as well. (Though May was not the best time to see it...)

Hello there,
The hologram at the Cowra Visitor Centre tells the story of the Cowra Breakout from a local girl's perspective ("Clare") once you view the hologram you may be interested in visiting the POW campsite where there is a replica guard tower with a audio stream telling the story of the Cowra Breakout from a military perspective.
The staff at the Cowra Visitor Centre are happy to assist you in making the most of your stay and answering any questions you may have in relation to the war history of our region.
We hope to welcome you soon.
Kind regards,
Belinda
