About
Resolutely standing guard within Cowra's residential area, on the corner of Binni Creek Road and Amaroo Avenue, you'll find the Garrison Gates. The brick structures mark the original entrance to the headquarters of the 22nd Garrison Battalion, the unit responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Cowra POW Camp.

This is a pretty simply attraction. In the middle of suburbia you will find these "gates" on the corner of a T intersection, in a small park. There is space to stop and have a closer look - we did - or you can just slow down as you drive by. It is just the two rock/brick "posts" of the old gates, so there isnt a whole lot to see, but it is certainly part of the towns history. Definitely worth at least a drive by, or if you have 5 minutes, park right in front of them and have a read of the plaques.

We drove from the Japanese Garden to this site of the former POW camp, there is a enlightening hollowgram/video running continuously in the Information Centre that is surrounded by the Rose Garden. Fascinating history of not only Japanese, but Italian and some Indonesian detainees. Visit you will enjoy it.

The Garrison Gates were relocated into the town (a possible mistake as they would have been more interesting where they were built and used) and also difficult to find as there was little signage. The gates were the entrance to the 22nd Garrison Battalion and believed, but not verified to have been built by Italian POW's.

Needs better signage otherwise you'll drive past. It's right on the corner. The information post is informative though.

Beautiful entrance gates to the 22nd Garrison Battalion Headquarters - it's said the gates may have been built by Italian POWs from the Camp. Rosemary bushes leading up to the gates rather poignant.

The Garrison Gates mark the entrance to the headquarters of the 22nd Garrison Battalion, the unit responsible for guarding the prisoners in the Cowra POW Camp. The Garrison and the Headquarters are all gone and now they lead one into a new Housing estate and Historical walk that winds its way to the site of the Camp. The Plaque suggests that they may have been built by Italian POws.

These gates, possibly built by Italian prisoners of war, are the original entrance to the Cowra prisoner of war camp. From these gates, one walk up to Hensley Park and onto the Garrison Walk- a beautifully constructed walking/cycle track all the way to the POW campsite. Along the Garrison Walk are a number of excellent information plaques. A lovely walk through rural countryside to the POW campsite- a major historical site for several nationalities.
