Fabulous - Highly recommended

After the “Iron Blow” we went across to Horsetails Falls lookout. Both spots were stark, windy, moon-like landscapes. So windy .....

Challenging walk
Apr. 2021
Stopped off here to do walk on a cold, windy and rainy day. You need a little bit of fitness to be able to do this walk as there are many steps up to view falls. The day was terrible when we did it and we finally got up to the top and I must say that the view up top is not much better than bottom or half way up so really not necessary to go all the way. It would have been a nicer walk if weather had of been nice. Glad we did it as it was definitely a challenge to get up to top.

A beautiful walk that is great for the family

Horsetail Falls is very close to Ironblow Lookout and a great walk for kids and elderly.
Horsetail Falls is amazing to view in Winter when their is higher rainfall and the water is raging.

Walk as spectacular as the falls!
May 2021 • Couples
Just outside Queenstown you will find the sign and car park for Horseshoe Falls. The walk itself is a walkway which hugs the side of the mountain as you climb ever higher to the falls. You can see the falls fairly early so continuing to climb only improves your view. A great walk, the falls were ok but probably would be better in winter. Take a coat as you’re fairly high and the weather can change quickly.

Board walk on a cliff
Apr. 2021 • Couples
A short walk up a path then a timber board walk on the side of a cliff looking at the waterfall and valley below can be a little bit windy until you get around the corner. We had plenty of rain waterfall was flowing quite well worth the 15 minutes to stop.

Just a matter of timing
Mar. 2021
It's all a matter of chance really during the dryer seasons but we managed to visit just after rain had fallen and the falls were in full flight. Would be stunning during the winter and the new path to the falls makes it all that easier. If you are in Queenstown take the 5 minutes it takes to get to the falls and take a look.

A beautiful walk with spectacular views
Mar. 2021
Horsetail Falls is located between Queenstown and Gormanston. The walk up to the viewing platform is nice. However, the secret is to keep going off the walkway on the hidden track to the top of the waterfall.

No water in the falls at present.

The day I went there was virtually no water in the waterfall down the rockface and it was blowing a gale on the path to get there. Definitely need a windproof jacket.

Great views and good walkway

Horse Tail Falls Walk. Make sure you stop at the colourful Horse Tail Falls at the top of the pass 5km from Queenstown in Tasmania where you can park and do the 1km return walk along the new boardwalk. The Horse Tail waterfall comes off Mt Owen, the big mountain behind Queenstown and can vary from a trickle when it is dry to a massive waterfall after rain. The most interesting part is walking across the conglomerate rock – if you like rocks then this is the place to go with the ancient glacial conglomerate and volcanic rocks in many different colours and shapes. Mt Owen is pink from iron oxide, and the surrounding hills are orange, yellow, brown, purple and white from copper and other minerals. Mt Owen towers over Queenstown at 1,146 metres (3,760 feet) above the sea which is only 20 kms away. From Horse Tail Falls you can also drive or walk a short distance across to the Iron Blow lookout where you can see a massive hole in the mountain from gold and copper mining. Gold was discovered there in 1883 and then copper was mined from there from 1891 to 1922. Massive piles of tailings or diggings from the mine cover the landscape with great views far into the distance towards the south. Most of the landscape around the Mt Lyall mine is stark from years of sulphur pouring into the air from mining operations when the mine was working. It is now no longer operating but is in a care and maintenance phase as the mine has been put up for sale again. Now you would think there is a walking path back down to Queenstown but due to the steep gullies and hills, there is none and so you have to walk carefully down the road. Keep to the left or the right depending on the bends and the walk down takes about an hour. There is a lot to see – different types of rocks and plants and trees sprouting out of the barren landscape. You may see people riding their bikes up the steep climb and watch them freewheeling down again at great speed. The Horse Tail Falls walk is highly recommended for the unusual rock formations and colours and great views on a clear day.

A fantastic walk on the side of a muntain to a beautiful waterfall.
Feb. 2021
Another beautiful walk around Queenstown. Horsetail Falls was a great 20 minute walk for the family to see a huge waterfall.
Right across the road was Iron Blow Lookout and the old mining town of Gormanston.
Queenstown has so much to explore and discover especially if you ask the locals where the non-tourist hikes, walks, waterfalls and rock pools are.
