Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Didn't see the staircase, however, visited Hearson's Cove during the day, it is an absolutely gorgeous place. Very unusual. The cove, the broken rock mountains, aboriginal paintings, the gravelly/shelly beach, the endless blue sky. Hard to explain.
Must see.

Everyone in town seemed to have converged on the beach. It was a super moon the night before.
Vehicles could practically be parked at the edge of the beach. At low tide, it was flat for hundreds of metres.
Behind us, the sun was setting. It was beautiful.
We were stationed a bit too far right, and the sight of the moon rising was slightly interrupted. The full moon was beautiful.
We were well prepared as we brought mozzie guard, picnic dinner and drinks, headtorch, a jacket for the cold, and camp chairs.

Hearson Cove Rd ends directly on the beach allowing access to cars. Even though it was one day before the best monthly date to admire this phenomenon, along the upper edge of the beach there were dozens of cars lined up. Although someone did the barbeque (there are barbeque facilities and toilets here) many waited near the car while some groups of people seemed to literally walk over the water. We also entered the water (which was at extremely low tide) and saw a truly unique situation. For hundreds of meters out to sea, the seabed of sand and mud was perfectly flat and covered only by a couple of centimeters of water. Normally in a flat area you can see the pools of water but here it was as if the seabed had been built with a perfect horizontal alignment by an engineer and covered with a thin layer of water at a uniform depth of a couple of centimeters. We walked for over 200m with the water always at the same height on the foot. Being the sunset, the very calm and rosy water of the bay did not allow to see the bottom and whoever walked on it seemed to walk on the water. An unreal situation. Back on shore when it was nearly dark we waited for the phenomenon of the Staircase to the Moon. Unfortunately not being the right day, the scale was not complete, but the long and extended reflection of the moon on the calm waters allowed a clear imagination of the stairs reaching to the moon. In these conditions of time and tide, Hearson’s Cove is truly a unique place.

We were very fortunate to be in Karratha for the staircase to the moon. Absolutely awesome, we loved it. Plenty of parking and nice just to sit and watch. Felt like you could walk on water.
The visitors centre has the dates and times. Don’t miss it.

If you want the natural phenomenon, this version is probably second best, best being Settlers Beach at Cossack. No markets and way less people so much more enjoyable with a picnic and a chilled drink.

I went with my husband to experience this and to say it was gorgeous is an understatement its so serene and to see the children and dogs playing when the tide was out and all sitting down once the moon rose was so beautiful,
I recommend taking chairs and a picnic, there are toilets there and chill with your friends and family and loved one watching mother nature at its finest.

We did a Staircase to the Moon tour with Aboriginal guide Clinton Walker of Ngurrangga Tours and it was excellent = a great way to learn about Aboriginal culture in the area, to experience the beauty of the moonrise and explore the mudflats at low tide. Great night out and I highly recommend tours with Clinton.
