My 3 sons and I went Barra fishing for the first time yesterday.
From the first phone call with Jane to organise a day until being dropped back at our accommodation in Kununurra, everything was excellent.
Jane was so friendly and accommodating to fit us in for a full day fishing.
We had 2 boats in which my youngest son and I went with Jimmy.
With Greg taking my other 2 sons.
We had no trouble netting bait and never took much time to do so.
Every spot we stopped to fish we hit fish.
Jimmy’s patience was tested for we lost several really good ones through not doing what he had told us.😤
But we had a ball catching up to a 95cm Barra and several other really good ones.
Seeing the massive crocodiles and wildlife was such an eye opener.
Jimmy and Greg filleted a couple of legal sized ones for us to take home which were absolutely beautiful to eat.
I would totally recommend this fishing trip to anyone.
Thanks again to Jane,Greg and Jimmy for a wonderful experience.
Regards Brad Cameron

This trip was actually in July of 2022, not September 2022. I was introduced to Greg Harman of Hairy Dog by one of the rangers on the Ord River. It was a Friday, and I called Greg and told him I was an American zoologist spending several months in Australia. I explained I wanted to photograph some of the larger crocs on the river. Greg asked when I wanted to go. I said are you available tomorrow, Saturday? Greg said sure and to be at his house at 12:00 noon.

When I arrived a young woman and her three girls were coming up from the river. I said hello and asked what they had been doing. They told me Greg had taken them out to photograph the big crocs. We sat down with Greg and had some cold drinks. Then Greg told me to get my equipment and meet him at the boats on the river.

I went down to the three boats. Two large, and one a small two man boat. Greg was filling up the petrol of the smallest boat. I asked him weren't the crocs twice as long as the boat? Greg in his cantankerous way said, "does that bother you?" I said no, and we were off.

We spent two hours going up river photographing crocs, then headed back to his home. Big crocs were everywhere. Many were about 5 meters according to Greg. We were heading back down river when Greg slowed the boat and pulled into a little cove. "What do you think of that croc?" he asked. He drove the boat about 15 meters from the croc, saying any closer and if the croc turned he would be in the boat. Greg then drove the boat around the left side of the sand bar and stopped 2 meters from the croc's head. You can see the small trees that were between the boat and the croc. Greg said the little trees would keep the croc from coming toward us! Amazing experience!

I have included two photos of the croc here. Greg said it is about 5.5 meters long. He said it is not the biggest croc on the river. Told me a story about giant crocs eating the carcass of a bull that was lying the water. Said he has seen some that were "much larger".

I have shown these photos to several of the croc people at Crocosaurus, rangers at the Top End, and the Cairns Aquarium. the general comments are this is one of the most massive crocs they have seen.

Great experience. Superb trip.

So excited to learn how to catch a Barra, didn’t know it would be totally different to fishing we had done in the past. Our guide Leith was happy when we did everything he said but belittled us when we didn’t. We understand the culture is rough and language rougher but to be called a f@&; idiot, didn’t sit well. After speaking with friends in the local tourist industry the following day we decided to leave a warning. We handled it at the time after the abuse didn’t stop toward the end of the day, but you guys need to understand you’re in an industry that pays good money for these experiences, be kind (and Leith find your own secret spots - Jimmy)
BTW we caught 1 to take home & 2 others went back!

Fantastic 1/2 day fishing on lower Ord. The beauty of being on the river spotting so many huge estuarine crocodiles, amazing bird life, lots of kangaroos and cattle. Catching my first big Barra was a bonus. Great guide Jim, cold water and fresh fruit/ sandwiches for morning tea!! Cannot recommend high enough.

I have rated this experience as very good only because of Jim, our guide. He is endlessly patient and knowledgeable about this fishing lark on the ord river. Unfortunately, the boat we were in was in massive need of maintenance. Not sure who the maintenance man is supposed to be here but he is certainly very slack. Not good enough! My husband had to sit on a seat which was unstable and he could only sit facing backwards. He ended up with a sore back after the day trying to stay upright. For another seat we had to head back in to camp for it to be screwed back on as it came out of its housing. Jim tutored us to catch our fish and informed us about the teeming wildlife in the area which he obviously cares about. I recommend you ask for Jim to be your guide, and to check your seat before you leave for the day.

This was one of the best trips I've been on!
Besides the early pick up to get the fishing camp, everything was such a great experience.
Jim (our guide for the day) was friendly, experienced, knowledgeable and happy to explain the simplist of things to my city never fished before self.
Jim's has a great ability to spot crocs, find live bait, Read the river to know where to go and tell you bits about crocs he's watched over his time doing the tours. Watching Jim step out of the boat to grab some live bait with a net after seeing crocs up to 5m long made me nervous but Jim said with a smile, "Nah, it'll be all right."
Jane and Greg back at the camp greeted us in the morning making sure we were ready to go. Meeting us after the tour for a cold one to see how we all went.
Despite not grabbing a barra that would make it to my plate the day spent on the Ord was well worth it.

I highly recommend doing this.

We went as family of 4 on full day tour in July. Whilst the weather was a bit cold for the big Barra, our guides, Jimmy and Colin worked hard to find us some fish. Their knowledge of the mighty Ord was exceptional. We pulled in 8 small Barra between us though all were undersize. We used a mix of live bait and lures and our guides expertly cast for those of us not confident with bait casters. The crocodile display and bird life was amazing. Expert commentary and very friendly guides made this an awesome day out even without landing a big one! Would highly recommend and Dad and son seriously considering a trip back in April in search of that big one!

Went for the first barramundi trip and heard all about Hairy Dog. We went on the boat with Hairy Digg Himself and we found him to be the most condensening guide ever. He was in polite and screaming at everyone whenever something wasn’t correct in his eyes. He had no bait so we spent 30% of the time sitting in the boat waiting for him to catch bait which he got little of . Whenever a fish came on he made it unpleasant with his panick style yelling at everyone.
Sarcasm was his only answer to a question .
The other guides who were with our party seemed happy . I wouldn’t want to end up with this grumpy old Hairy Dog if I went again .

Bloody brilliant day out with Jim. My wife and I went along with a visitor (Tony) from Albury Wodonga and had a ball. To see the wildlife in natural environment was amazing as was the croc feast. Jim was excellent, great knowledge and patience with us three as was his attention to safety. Bonus was I got two Barra - both went back, to small, to big - highly recommend, Ryano
