About Historic Durack Homestead Museum
The Homestead was built in 1896 by the Durack family, and would have been a very impressive building at the time, with a cool breeze corridor going through the house and 6 rooms coming off it. Relocated in the early 1970s when Lake Argyle was created, the Museum is a testimony to the pioneering spirit of the first European settlers in the Kimberley, and contains many artefacts, an updated family tree, a video showing how the Argyle Dam was created. The Museum is a great place to learn about the history of the Kimberley region, take a coffee break in the relaxing garden, look out for the resident Bower birds and buy some unique souvenirs. The Museum is open between April 1st and September 30th.

What a great job they have done of resurrecting the old house and what a beautiful house it is. To have saved it from being lost forever is fantastic

We took part in this event during the Ord Valley Muster and found it fascinating. The house and surrounds are a great reminder of the hardships our pioneer settlers went through, but some of the displays needed a good clean, especially as this is the high season with more tourists coming in.

Hi Sharyn B - thank you for your review and comments. Some items are better left due to their age as cleaning deteriorates them, however we do have a cleaning schedule at the museum and will ensure its being followed.

While on a bus tour to Lake Argyle and the Old river, we stopped at the historic homestead for a quick look. Fascinating to hear how the original was dismantled and rebuilt to prevent it sinking beneath the waters of the lake for ever. Old maps and the history of the Durack family certainly worth perusing. Some of the old cemetery has also been recreated which gives a look of authenticity to the whole project.

This marvellous old building was removed from the approaching floodwaters of the dam, stone by stone, and re-erected near the dam wall. It contains many treasures of the past era, furnishings, books and writings, farm implements and is well worth a look.
