The cliffs, beaches and surf are all worth seeing. The gannet colony was really quite amazing. So many birds all in one location. The area is well laid out for walking and viewing with good trails, steps where necessary and railings.

Easier drive to the gannets from Auckland. A lot of walking trails, we where not able to do all of them. We loved the wonderful view of the birds while they where flying

I love birds, but I believe anyone will love this place. The views are great. You can almost touch the birds. The signs are informative, and the steps are good exercise. The earlier or the later in the day the better. Midday seems to be the most crowded.

We've been here at Muriwai beach about 2 years ago and then 1 year ago. All the time we've been on different tracks, paths, and even viewpoints! I like that I can see

Unbelievable that such a huge colony, so close to the walkway and just 45 Km out of Auckland, is not mentioned in most circuits in the North island

The gannet colony is just wonderful although extremely smelly! You can sit and watch them all day. There is easy access to a viewing platform where you are quite close to them. The sun sets right behind the colony so it makes for a stunning picture.

We drove in to the Muriwai Beach car park along a narrow but sealed access road: there was space for perhaps 100 cars here plus picnic, toilet and changing room facilities. A short distance back up the road is a small cafe. Whilst not a great fan of black sand beaches, this one is quite stunning with lovely shoreline vistas... More

We took a marvellous day trip out onto the west Coast, near Auckland. We drove to Muriwai and after a short hike (wheel-chair accessible ) came upon a spectacular Gannett Colony, tucked into every nook and cranny of the cliff-side. The view was spectacular wether you looked south at the Colony of birds, west out to the ocean or north... More
