Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Rugged beach on a windy winter’s day. Perfect for a beach walk. Tracks along the back of dunes if you want some shelter from the wind. Unfortunately the cafe is currently shut down, so bring your own supplies.

Muriwai Beach, a natural wonder on the west coast of the Auckland Region in the North Island of New Zealand, is a windswept volcanic black sand coastal wonder. The impressive waves rolling into the shore, the serrated landscape across the Maori Bay, and a fascinating colony of gannets are some of the highlights of a visit to this beach.

This beach is just 40-minutes to an hour away from the bustling ‘City of Sails’. The ruggedly beautiful landscape and seascape are just beyond mesmerizing. A friend of mine suggested that I should visit this place for two main reasons. One, to wait for the magical sunset at this side of New Zealand; and two, be amazed at the colony of breeding gannets.

Various activities abound the area. It includes surfing, windsurfing, paragliding and hang gliding, fishing, bush walking, or just strolling along the beach. Muriwai is definitely one New Zealand beach that will make you want to be one with nature.

A nice place for a day trip from Auckland. Sand, cliffs, fascinating sea and bird's, a lot of of birds. If you can ignore the smell it's interesting to study them for a while.

unfortunately you can't access the beach right as they have it restricted to local residents only with the cyclone and subsequent slips(mud slides). Check local message boards before driving out.

Great wide beach with easy access, some swell and currents so inexperienced swimmers should stay between the flags. Interesting cave to the south end cliffs with small crabs and other creatures

This was a truly fantastic day seeing the large Gannet Breading colony along the cliffs. The walking area and platforms made for easy walking and great viewing & picture tacking. There were so many birds, area reminded us of Patagonia. The Ocean was a little ruff and watching some of the locals on the rocks bellow fishing was fun as they were hard core getting hit by wind and wave. The wind was blowing and there was a guy parasailing over the cliffs. He landed near where we parked so we got to say hi.
My camera gave out just before we arrived, hope to add pictures latter from phone.
This is an easy drive from Auckland.
