Beautiful Castle, but it feels lacking, it’s only a 30min to 45min walk from Creeslough main street. You can see changes of time in the building structure! Try to find the sculpted face on the Castle Entrance if you have a good eye. There’s a small cemetery just before you enter the castle, I wanted to check it out but the gates were closed :(
It’s great to visit it during the warmer months of the year, when the tide is not very high and the sun is out in the sky :)
I wish the gates to the coast were open for the general public, I understand the security concern, but I’d imagine during summer it would be a great experience to ocean bath by the castle!

We found this on our map and decided to take a break from hiking Glenveagh. This stop is well worth the drive. And when finished touring the castle, visit the coffee stand next to the parking lot and have a drink of hot coffee, tea, or chocolate. The owner is a very cordial and warm lady. We were fortunate to meet the farmer who owns the field next to the castle. A fine man with three fine sons. Another reason we love Ireland, the people are so cordial and friendly.

Doe Castle, or Caisleán na dTuath, at Sheephaven Bay near Creeslough, County Donegal, was historically a stronghold of Clan Suibhne (Clan Sweeney)
It was built in the 16th Century, and was inhabited, on separate occasions, until 1843
This is of significance to anyone who wishes to visit a historic site that has the added bonus of really beautiful sea views looking out from the peninsula.
The castle itself is a four storey tower-house/keep.
Our Visit was accompanied by really beautiful weather which made for a lovely relaxing visit. The lawn inside the castle grounds itself are very beautifully kept and really add something special to the atmosphere of the castle grounds. We took our time surveying the different parts of the castle,it was a place that could not be rushed as it was a marvel to know that we were in a place that had stood the test of time.We were a part of living history!
There are many special Architectural Features inside the grounds of Doe Castle,
including Circular Stone Gate Piers at the entrance to Doe Castle, and Turrets/Battlements which give Doe Castle itself an air of History and Grandeur.
There are three tours each day on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at 11am, 2pm and 4pm in July and August.
The Castle grounds are open to the public 7 days a week all year round, from 10am until 6pm.
An added bonus is that there are two Picnic Tables in the Garden area just outside the Castle Grounds for anyone who wishes to enjoy this special area for a while longer. In the vicinity is Doe Castle Graveyard which is worth a visit also, with gravestones dating back to the 1800's.A Gem for Historians!
Highly Recommended to all and very enjoyable.

Time-travel. Impressive. Authentic. Highlight of Ireland.

A complete and total surprise when we stumbled upon this castle. In fact, it was seeing this imposing structure from the road, keeping watch over the bay like a medieval fortress, that caught our attention. Very quiet with few visitors, the grounds are well kept and give a great view of this ancient keep. We were fortunate to catch the groundskeeper who gave us a private tour of the structure that has been excellently restored inside the tower. I felt like I had stepped back in time it was so authentic. Plaques posted around the place give great information though they couldn’t do better than our own private impromptu tour with the groundskeeper. There is a coffee and souvenir shop on the grounds.

We visited on an extremely rainy day so we weren’t able to explore outdoors as much as we wanted but we enjoyed the informative tour with our enthusiastic tour guide. The stairs within the castle structure are steep and narrow. The tour was only about 30 minutes so a perfect length for children.

We visited the castle and were very impressed with the tour guide Michael. He was very informative and it was obvious that he really enjoys telling people about the castle. Our young children were fascinated by it as it has not been modernised so they could really get an idea of the way it was. The castle and exterior/grounds are well kept. We had a coffee/ice-cream in the snack bar and again, it was very nice and the girl was very friendly. The full visit only takes 30/40 mins depending on how much time u want to spend looking around. Highly recommend.

Doe Castle is restored & open to the public. Definitely worth a visit if you are on the Wild Atlantic Way. Guided tours are only 3 euro. There is a lot of history associated with the castle & though our guide was excellent & the display informative, the castle definitely has potential for longer tours & more displays-perhaps interactive. Donegal has been rather slow in comparison to other counties to maximise the beauty, history & amenities that it has. The site has historical connections that could be linked to other heritage sites & locations in the county. There is a little coffee shop -nice to chill out & relax. Signage from the main road could be improved.

Doe Castle has an amazing history dating back many hundreds of years. You can walk the castle grounds and cemetery and soak in the history, reading informative signs detailing the fortifications and additions to the castle through the years.

In season, don't forget to have a delicious cup of coffee from Doe Castle Coffee at the front of the parking lot! Patricia and Allister, owners of Doe Castle Coffee and caretakers of the castle, are very welcoming and I can't imagine two nicer people in the world. Of my entire vacation in Europe this spring, my time talking to them was the highlight because they are the epitome of Irish warmth and hospitality.

Doe Castle is a wonderful spot to visit, with tours run through the summer by enthusiastic young people from the local area. Michael was a brilliant guide and knew lots of stories about the history of the castle! We had a wonderful time exploring the castle and grounds. There’s a lovely small cafe on the premises too!

This is an out of the way place but not to be missed on a warm summers day. Walk around the little graveyard, the view is really good. There is just something about this place which makes you want to stay a while and soak up the atmosphere.
