Historic church that feels accessible, open, cheerful place
May 2021
This historic church with visible bullet holes, feels welcoming to visitors. Wander round the outside, note the bullet holes from 19th century battle, and have a quiet look inside and around the graveyard.

You've not been to Kororareka without coming to this little piece of history, The Church comes with bullet holes and grave sites that are the oldest in NZ. Simply unbelievable until you've seen it.

Fascinating

We spent time looking through the gravestones in the Cemetery, after hearing lots of information during our RussellMiniTour with Kelly - she brought it all to life. The cross stitch cushions on the pews are amazing! - take the time to pop in and have a look!

This is the oldest church in New Zealand so of huge significance. It survived the fighting of the 1840s and has hosted many famous people such as the Queen. The graves in the churchyard are most interesting and date back to the early days of settlem

Small Beautiful old Church
Jun. 2020
It is the oldest existing church in NZ today, and the oldest building still used for its original purpose. The missionaries purchased land in 1834 from Maori chiefs and the building build by 1835 with the first service was on 3 January 1836 and a burial ground around the church in 1839 and used by Captain William Hobson in 1840 to make proclamations. It is old beautiful historical small church building at the town centre of a famous small town, Russell. Have a look to admire the beauty and learn a bit about history of this church, all for free.

Fabulous Lil Church
Nov. 2020
Lots of history and a great place to walk around and explore. Entry is a $2 gold coin donation which we didn't have (who carries cash these days?) but was unattended so we could take photos from the door.

Old headstones go back to the signing of the Treaaty Of Waitangi
Nov. 2020
Interesting to have a look around the churchyard with a number of old headstones that date from the 1800's. The church is quaint, and worth a quick visit.

Take a moment to walk the grounds
Sep. 2020 • Couples
The sign out the front declaring that this 1836 church is the oldest in New Zealand makes you wonder just what it has witnessed over the years. A walk through the graveyard reading the stones gives you an insight to how tuff times were for the pioneer settlers and those that came to develop our land.
