Stunning hilltop walk and views
Jul. 2020
On a stunning day the walk up cape farewell, along the hilltops to pillar point lighthouse, old mans bluff trig and down onto the beach and farewell spit (and loop back on the road, but the road trip is not very nice so if you can get a ride between the two points this would be ideal). The views are wonderful.
The walk from cape farewell to wharariki beach is not very nice - its not well formed and the paddocks are steep, very close to cliff edges and you will get wet feet crossing the creek. you are much better to walk to wharariki beach direct from the carpark

Windy
Mar. 2020 • Family
You can’t visit New Zealand’s South Island without visiting the Farewell Spit. It’s a windy walk in the beach but not windy in the more protected trails and dirt road of the spit’s interior. No waves but plenty of strong wind on the bay side of the spot and large waves, sand dunes and plenty more wind on the ocean side. There are organized tours our you can park at the car park and tramp around on your own.

fabulous visit
Oct. 2019
We missed out on going to Farewell Spit over 40yrs ago, so it was a no brainer that we would go this time. Well worth it. The cost was a bit high (for us NZers), it was for 6 1/2 hours. We went with family & had a fab day - saw the migrating birds coming in, seals, the lighthouse & lots more. Would certainly recommend.

Top of South Island
Jan. 2019
Enjoyed the visit to Farewell spit. Parking was plentiful and enjoyed the approx 1hr sign posted walk across the spit and back around along the very big sandy beach. Also headed to the headland and had a great view.

Wow, oh wow
Sep. 2019
The contrasts of this place were incredible. We had a fine windy day with some really light rain at times. This made it surreal being up on the headlands and then latter down on the beach with the sun going down. There were only a couple of other people around. We drove to all the walking spots and did all the shorter walks except the light house as we ran out of time. Truly memorable and worth the drive.

The top of The south island
Apr. 2019 • Couples
We were lucky enough to get there on a sunny day right on low tide. The place looked quite placid. Within 15 minutes the waves started to ramp up and it looked like the real West Coast. Lovely.

Nice walk
Mar. 2019 • Couples
Nice walk, especially the part on the sand beach. After the rain it was really fun to walk on the sandy dunes.

Worth a Visit but dont underestimate the distance or elements
Jan. 2019 • Friends
We decided to do the Farewell Spit walk along the inner harbour then across to ocean beach side and back to the farm. We left early but it got hot very quickly. Very little shade and tide comes in fast in the harbour. Enjoyed the walk because were prepared others didn't seem as prepared.

Nice 3 hours walk
Jan. 2019
It is a nice and easy walk. Approx. 3 hours loop. First you walk along the inner beac, then you cross over (15 minute walk) to the outer beach. If you are in Puponga, I would definitely do this walk, after having visited Wharariki Beach (for sunset).

Lovely area to see birds
Dec. 2018 • Couples
We were looking for wild birds and farewell Spit was recommended. It is right at the north of South Island. The Spit is long but only part of it is open so as to protect the birds. Parking was easy. It was a lovely walk along the beach (lots of birds), then we cut across through the trees (more birds) to the sand dunes and beach the other side. Unfortunately we lost sight of signs and couldn’t work out the best way back so we turned around - but enjoyed the walk anyway. A drive up from the car park there is a visitors centre and cafe (and another car park) - lovely food there with good views. Well worth a stop.
