About
The way is the story – the story is the way In the Slovenian Alpine Museum the past and the future go hand in hand. A rich collection of items with diverse historical stories, rich photographic and archive material, and a comprehensive professional booklet give the visitor the chance to grasp the popularity and importance of the mountaineering activity in the Slovenian territory. The permanent exhibition is based on the concept of a museum story, which we experience through our own climb up the mountain.

Interactive museum that is interesting even for people whose idea of going into the mountains is taking the cable car to the restaurant at the top (us). Explains many aspects of Slovenian mountaineering. The best part is the VR zip line experience!

The museum showed an interesting approach in presenting information in game format. There are different quests available as well as online audio guides. The exposition itself far from being excelent but overall experience is alright.

Last weekend I have rented an electric bike at the Slovenian Alpine Museum offered by the company eVelo. I went to the Dovška Baba mountain (1800m) and was able to cover the height difference of 1200m in 60 minutes. The electric bike enables you to cover great distances rapidly but at the same time enables you to regulate the difficulty of navigating the terrain. Not to mention that the view from the summit and the trip itself is amazing.

Warmly recommend it to everyone!

This small museum provides an interesting perspective on the history of Slovenian alpine regions and mountaineering. The visit begins with a film on the Slovenian Mountains which takes about 20 minutes. The rest of the museum contained various exhibits of the flora and fauna of the alpine regions, and a detailed expose on mountain climbing and equipment over the years. There were some interesting displays here including a mountain hut where they simulated surviving a severe mountain storm. It felt quite treacherous in the dark. There was some old mountaineering equipment and history of the Slovenian mountaineering society. There were numerous stuffed animals including a brown bear that had given its hunter a good go before dying.
There are also various interactive displays which helps you get into the fun of the museum. There are 5 terminals where you have to answer questions on the topics of the museum and in the end you get a postcard printed off with stamps of your correct answers. A nice memento.

We really enjoyed visiting this museum which cost us 13€ to enter as a family of 2 adults and 3 teenagers. There was some interactive games which you played as you went round.

It was so interesting to read about the changes in mountaineering and climbing in Slovenia. Also the achievements of the Slovenians were on display.
The best bit was the opportunity to experience a mountain top thunder storm in a hut: so scary! Make sure you shut the door properly to get the process started. But what an experience!

The staff spoke little English but this was not a problem and the museum's displays were in Slovenian and in English. The building is modern and airy.

Also don't miss the opportunity to experience standing on the cliff edge of Triglav by walking through to the back on the ground floor and donning the 3D glasses. Amazing!

All in all a happy hour or so spent here and happily recommend to anyone with even the slightest interest in mountains.

Well signposted from main road too.

The museum only cost €13 for a family of four so it wasn’t too disappointing when many of the experiments on the lower ground floor were broken or had bits missing. It was a disappointing start but things did get better. The interactive quiz on the top floor did keep the kids engaged and we found out things we wouldn’t have done if we’d just been left to look at the exhibits. They enjoyed completing the tasks to get their postcard with stamps. Definitely worth popping in if you’re passing but wouldn’t recommend going way out of your way.

Dear Sir or Madam, thank you for your honest opinion. We are sorry for the inconvenience you had at our temporary display "On the Top of the Mountains by the Sky". This display was visited by numerous groups from Slovenia and from neighbour countries. Unfortunatelly some of experiments didn't work at time of your visit. We will replace this part of display in next days. The next theme will be "Female Courage - an exhibition about Slovenian women climbers. We strongly believe, it will be very interesting. We are happy that you enjoyed at our permanent interactive exhibition. Beside that, we offer also VR glasses with views from tops of 30 Slovenian peaks and we offer also "VR winter ascend to Mount Triglav". There is also an adventure room - some kind of escape room, where visitors try not to be caught by a storm (additional payment). Our visitors can visit 80-years old bivouvac (an emergency hut), and listen some stories that happened around bivouvacs. There are also programmes for families and children, and several lectures about mountaineering and alpinism, usually at friday evenings. At museum's front desk we hire sports equipment, like bicycles or via ferrata sets. Our neighbourhood offers a lot of oportunities for cycling and climbing. We trully hope that you come back and give us another opportunity to reach your expectations. Best regards, Matjaz Podlipnik
