When you are traveling to the region of Maramures (one of the most beautiful parts in Romania), beside the cultural immersion , the traditions and wooden churches - you have also several beautiful natural landmarks - and for those of you who are interested in discovering the natural beauty of this area, well here it is a teaser.
The Horses Waterfall - a waterfall as the name is saying - very close to the Resort of Borsa , dropping from the Rodnei Mountains in several steps - and totaling 90 meters in height being the tallest waterfall in Romania.
Getting there can be done in 3 ways: take one of the tracks that starts in Borsa and climb your way the fall, the other option is take the chairlift and after a 15 minutes comfortable ride - you find yourself at the beginning of a 25 minutes track downhills and like 35 minutes uphill the return - so yes it requires a bit of effort but it is all well worth it ... and the 3rd option is take the cable car to the top of the Olympic Ski slope of Borsa and from there is 5,5 - 6 hours on a marked trail till the waterfall.
And yes there is a story/legend involving horses and bears - I will not talk to much about it - and leave it to you to discover it.
Now - since you will need to do some tracking - wear boots - not flipflops or other totally inappropriate footwear for tracking in the mountains - the slopes you will need to climb can be demanding towards your ankles and if you will have even a small rain during your visit the slopes can become slippery very easily so you'll need the extra grip of your boots on your way back.
Overall a great place - extraordinary scenery - definitely worth the visit - when in the area go and check it for yourself.

I visited the Horses Waterfall in the summer of 2021, when I spent a few beautiful days in the region. It is a must visit place of interest in Borșa, as it is the tallest waterfall in entire Romania, and also, one of the most beautiful!

The way to the waterfall starts at the Chairlift, where you have to pay a fee to ride(I believe it was 15 RON, no discounts for students or elderly/pensioners, sadly).
The chairlift will take you up a hill, and while you enjoy the ride, you can admire the beautiful view of the Rodnei Mountains, and the town of Borsa. The ride ends on the top of the hill, where a kind gentleman will help you to get off the chairlift in safety.
After you get off, you are a 20-30 minutes walk away from the waterfall.

I strongly advise visitors to the waterfall not to go on wandering with unsuitable footwear, such as city sneakers or basket shoes, but with boots and rugged sneakers, which have enough grip, as the steep slopes(which turn into muddy slopes, if it rains) might cause issues for the tourists with unsuitable shoes.

Must visit!
Recomand din toata inima!

We went up the hill from our Pensiunea, which is the closest to the Cascada Cailor. It's a good one hour hiking, starting from the unpaved path. Saw many mushrooms, some black berries on the way (plucking and eating them) and amazed by the stream of river from the waterfall.

The waterfall is very tall and it's easily seen from far. We went in September where temperature is still quite cold especially near the waterfall, my advise is to bring along a light jacket or at least something that covers you from the wind.

The only bad part is there are way too many rubbish on the sides of the track. Hikers and tourists simply threw the emptied bottles around.

You have multiple possibilities to get to the waterfall, best way to reach it is to use the chair lift, after the point you get down from it the walk until the waterfall is approx. 30 minutes at a slow pace, the waterfall is breathtaking, it is also the highest waterfall in Romania , a must see if you visit Borsa !!!

This waterfall exceeded my expectations. We took the chairlift from Borsa and we followed the 1 km pathway that was frozen on 30 dec 2020. This really added a bit of difficulty but it also made our journey even more exciting. Everything was a constant view. When we reached the destination it was really astounding. I LOVED IT! You must see it if you get close to its area.

The waterfall itself was a bit disappointing but the road made up for it. We took the chairlift from Borsa up the local ski slope which takes quite some time so you can get a good view of the surrounding. The stroll through the woods was also nice.

The waterfall is really nice, just like the landscape the peak offers once you reach the top.

It took us about 30 mins to reach and return from the waterfall. It s worth a try, and rest assured that you'll have your legs day done.

Being for few days in holiday we visited the Horses Waterfall. It is a great place to visit. It is not hard to arrive there after a short road with chairlift, you will walk on feet like 40 minutes to see the waterfall. It is placed in the great Rodna Mountains with a view that take your breath away. You can take photos very close to that objectif and enjoy all around. If you come in Borsa I recommend strongly to visit this place.
