About
Located only ten minutes from Portland upon the rugged cliffs of Cape Nelson, the Cape Nelson Lighthouse precinct comprises the 35 meter tall lighthouse, the cosy Isabella's cafe, and two exquisitely renovated assistant lighthouse keeper's cottages available as accommodation. These historic buildings have been elegantly restored and now comprise two separate two-bedroom cottages. The cottages are ideal for a secluded couple's get away, families, or groups! The precinct is located within Cape Nelson State Park and is surrounded by spectacular views, excellent walking tracks, and tours of the historic lighthouse run daily.Isabella's cafe, located in the old stables, offers morning and afternoon tea and gourmet lunches daily. Each cottage includes two bedrooms with queen sized beds, a fully equipped kitchen, dining area and lounge room with TV, DVD and an open fire place. All properties include free Wi-Fi, reverse cycle air conditioning and breakfast of cereal, milk, eggs, bacon, toast and condiments, as well as tea and coffee. About the area:Cape Nelson is a well known whale spotting area - observe from the cliffs or climb to the top of the lighthouse to spot southern wright whales in the middle of the year and blue whales in summer months! Dolphins and seals are sometimes spotted in the water as well! As we are located on the Great South West Walk, we are surrounded by kilometers of walking tracks through bush, beaches and cliffs. The area is rich in native wildlife, including kangaroos and wallabies, echidnas, koalas, and is close to Australia's only mainland Gannet breeding colony. The beaches around Portland are also well known for having great surf for all levels at any time of year, so make sure to bring boards and wetsuits!

Scaffolding was everywhere so the normal pleasant view of the lighthouse became one to be missed.

As is usual with builders, much of the surrounding area was fenced off in the most ugly possible way.

Give it a miss!

Unfortunately the lighthouse is undergoing maintenance at the moment so is surrounded by scaffold. Can't see the lighthouse at all

Cool lighthouse at top of hill with great view of the ocean in both directions. Worth a visit if heading to Portland! Very nice town.

A beautiful lighthouse structure standing tall for a perfect picture. The day we visited was extremely windy and the strong gush was making it somewhat difficult to keep ourselves steadily anchored. At times we were like getting blown off! The sea too was extremely rough with waves bashing on the rocks at the base of the cliff. It was very noticeable that the rocks at the lower level were formed of lava that has flown down many thousands of years ago. Light house precinct was a beautiful area and we were happy to have visited it.

Be aware that until the end of May 2023 the lighthouse is closed to visitors...it is covered in scaffolding and there will be noisy and messy sand blasting taking place. If you are thinking of booking one of the onsite keeper's cottages I would suggest you avoid this timeframe.

There are also a large number of wind turbines which detract from the natural beauty of the area.

Internet and phone ae sketchy at best - internet was not available during our visit this week.

Finally, you should also be prepared for unscheduled power outages in the cottages.

Amazing views right off the cliff tops facing west. Best time to go is definitely in the summer time specially sunset. Well worth a visit if you have made it all the way to South West Victoria. This is also a part of the Great South West Walk which connects to both Cape Bridge and Portland.

We had a most interesting time visiting the lighthouse and climbing to the top. Our guide was very knowledgeable and interesting. It was very windy and cold but the view from the top was fantastic and worthwhile

We were fortunate enough to be staying in the Lighthouse cottages at the base of the lighthouse. The first night the weather was lifted straight from a horror movie. It was dark, windy, rainy with a storm coming off the ocean. It was brilliant and you could not ask for better. The lighthouse itself sits on a rugged coastline that is well worth a visit.
