Walk the sculpture & art trail along the waterfront (town basin) - see some interesting sculptures & learn something about early settler history & on way back something about early Maori history. The Te Matau a Pohe bridge is really worth seeing. Suitable for wheelchairs....More
Beautiful Marina with lovely eateries a few gift shops and play area for kids. Look at beautiful boats or feeling energetic walk or run the loop follow the path over the bridge circles back to the start. Lots of sculptures and info on the way.
Lovely days have been spent perusing the local shops even though some locals see them as touristy shops...I love them and what they sell.
When you need a break you can stop and visit any of the local eateries varied in their specialities.
Whangarei is an eye opener for first time visitors. Its not a large town ,but it has an amazingly complicated traffic system in the town center that turns even light traffic into gridlock. So avoid it and concentrate on its many glorious bays,beaches and marinas....More

Took my grandchildren to the park and they loved it. So many to things to play with.
I suggest to that you put in more toilets. Hard to tell a young child to hang on because the 2 toilets are occupied. I don't know if...More
